In my opinion, the most egregious problem is the lack of credits for those that worked on these shows. I can't think of any other company that actively choses not to credit people. Those artists may find it difficult getting work elsewhere if they can't use writing/voice acting/producing etc credits on the work that they have done

@@MidwinterMinis I can't confirm what the timeline was exactly, but after recently hearing from someone close to the project what the story was initially for The Exodite vs. what we got, I feel pretty confident they had the project almost completely gutted just a few weeks before its scheduled release, and GW sent them back to nearly square one to make an entirely new show with a new story and cram that into an 8-month turnaround. The initial teaser that the studio who made it released showed Striking Scorpions fighting Space Marines, and the Tau speaking in their native language, and we got none of that in the final series, though it aligns with the original story outline I heard.

spent years working with gw and the teams of people they underpaid abused and took advantage of. exodite was ripped from the hands of the original creators due to legal strong-arming. the first episode had already been near completion when they forced a full re-write of the plot, and the series was originally supposed to be entirely in the tau language, the eldar were supposed to be in the eldarish and even gothic was going to be in latin(ish) for imperials. then gw told the creators that if they didn't agree to their demands theyd regret it. These are the same guys that did Angels of Death before they basically got ran out of the production at the end of the last episode because boylan wanted to make the show his way and his way only, denying any feedback or artistic freedom from his peers. They basically promised that team the sun and the moon to get them to work for nothing, and said they'd work out crediting them--- do any of them have credits? nope. the work of all artists who ever worked on a GW project gets reused in many productionns from GW, all their assets, yet the artists remain with no recognition. Why? because nothing is bigger then the brand. If the gw team led by andy smilie think your getting too big for your boots they'll run you out. there was a plot to the exodite, it just got kicked out the window for mindless monologuing courtesy of the rotation of writers who pass each script around with no idea what anything means. Their quality control is hilarious with random staff members who know barely anything about the lore piling notes on a spreadsheet for artists who are bleeding their passion because they are forced to make subpar 40k products. these "lore experts" regularly quit too which results in nothing making sense, and it can be years into a project until the new person comes on and they make you redo all the work over and over and over (it took one character fifteen months to be completed, a character that should have taken 6 weeks) angels of death bad sound? for sure, boylan thought he could do better with a free library and ignored the sound team, plus isnt everything covered by camera shake! hartmans another gem and screwed everyone over to get to where he is. feel bad for the iron within folks. they were given more of a leash then everyone but it was originally a 30k story. please dont give any credit to gw for astartes and pour out one for peterson whos in developement hell. they robbed these artists, took their ideas, never gave them credit, underpaid them, treated them like shit and kept the ones who wouldn't put up a fight. they're a company that acts like they're disney except they're way less competent and everyone stays poor and abused without any direction to march into its not that they are terrible writers, pay nothing, threaten people or screw artists over, its also the fact theyre criminally incompetent which makes everyone hate their life choices.

I physically winced at GW telling staff "you shouldn't be so egotistical, it's about the company, not the individuals." I've done jobs for companies where my moral rights were waived, and trying to explain to bosses why just having my name in the credits, nothing fancy, just small print on the inside cover or a little card at the end of something, is important was such a humiliating experience. In one case, I managed to get credit by literally threatening to resign! It's so obvious how much value Hatty brought to that show, and so how skilled individuals do make a difference and aren't interchangeable cogs in a corporate machine! Grr! 😡

While I agree that Astartes is definitely better than anything created specifically for Warhammer+, it's 13 minutes of animation that took over 2 years to make. The animator was also more than likely earning far more on Patreon than the budget of any Warhammer+ show. There was also little to no voice acting, the music was from Dredd, and the story was fairly bare bones. None of which diminishes the accomplishment that Astartes was, as its probably the best exampld of really capturing the 40k vibe, but making a fan film on your own time with no budget, deadline, or copyright concerns is quite different to the pressures of producing for a studio.

I’m probably coming to this too late. But I was contracted in 2018 to make shows, brought on the majority of animators in what was eventually warhammer+. To say working for them in this time, through COVID, was a blessing and a curse is an understatement and best described as being in an abusive relationship. Without getting into it too much, the lack of accreditation remains the ultimate insult to the men and women, many who were at the start of their careers and who loved the universes we built in. I see evidence of their work reused constantly to the benefit of an extremely wealthy corporation run by extremely well paid, and recognized, upper management as they show up in articles and announce involvement with Amazon. But I guess that’s hollywood. My only recommendation is to build your own stuff and treat your people the way you wish you had been treated.

The credit thing was a fight back in the 'good old days'. There was an interview with a YT channel recently (edit: Rick Priestley interview with Filmdeg Minis) that said the GW artists and sculptors kicked off massively because the writers were getting credits but they weren't. Everyone in the room knew it wasn't the text that was selling their books and minis. That's why GW used to have the artist names along with their art identifying marks/signitures in the credits section. Now the company have gone to the other extreme. No writer credits for rulebooks, no artist credits for art or design work. And now seemingly no recognition even for their painting staff in videos since Duncs, Peachy, Louise, etc pivoted to their own channels.

At best they treat the community like free marketing via "influencers" but they do very little to celebrate or even acknowledge the skill in their community (doing a few white dwarf showcases is the bare minimum). For this reason I don't think any of the big names would want to be involved directly with GW to teach a class. Any skilled hobbyist has more interaction directly with the community through their own personal accounts rather than work with GW to be badly paid, potentially have their name hidden (a la animation credits), or be placed under extremely restrictive contracts which would basically decimate their ability to be remotely critical of GW. Hey skilled painter! Wanna come teach some classes on how to paint good looking maggots? On the recent film deg interview with Rick Priestly he mentions wanting to stop crediting people way back to the late 80s/early 90s and only relented because John Blanche kicked off about it, so it does seem to be something which dates back to when GW were a much smaller operation, for whatever reason. I've not had a W+ sub so far, and that really surprises me. Theres so much stuff they could put on there or content they could create but the release schedule is so inconsistent I'd never commit to a subscription based model to pay for it. As an Age of Sigmar fan, I personally LOVED Blacktalon. But I at least understand that it might not have done the best job of explaining things for people who don't know the universe. As a fan it's genuinely good, but I get why you might not have vibed too much with it as a newcomer. But I'd at least like to take a bit to advocate for the first episode and give a bit of context that I hope helps. I liked how the story was told after the protagonists "died". Most of the main cast are Stormcast Eternals, beings that are like Space Marines in that they were once mortals given power to become "superhuman". And thats where the comparison ends. Because unlike Space Marines, when they die, Stormcast get "Reforged", basically respawned. But each time they come back, they lose another part of their humanity including memories of their mortal lives. So seeing the story told before and after the reforging process I thought was interesting. It did a good job of establishing the characters and the idea of Neave asking her fellow Stormcasts what they saw or remembered from the battle as we piece everything together is an important part of the show's own overarching theme of memories. Neave relentlessly spends most of the series trying to remember her own past memoris as a mortal, so the first episode acts as a microcosm of her overarching story in this show. TLDR: Blacktalon does expect you to know a bit about AoS going in, and thats a valid criticism. But I think that the first episode and the show as a whole are alot better than you gave them credit for.

Astartes has been moved from KZread to Warhammer TV, but unlike the majority of the animations there you don't need a WH+ account to watch it, so it's still available to all - it's just not somewhere anyone would find it... Of the others I think Angels of Death is my favourite. A lot of the others just feel like they're not actually telling much of a story, several Hammer & Bolter episodes feel more like animated bits of Codex fluff than actually full stories. Edit: I did however cancel my subscription before all of Pariah Nexus (and Blacktalon) were released so I don't have an opinion on them. The exclusive models this year weren't good enough to justify the cost and the rest of the content isn't valuable enough to me to feel worth the money without the models helping out.

Something that annoys me about WH+ is the content doesn't seem to be on local servers. Here in Australia the quality of video streams is 240p 360p at best with constant buffer wheels so the videos are unwatchable most of the time. Strangely it seems to be the new releases that stream ok so maybe the age of content and popularity dictates how many servers are being used to distribute content. The same goes for the vault, there is no support for local download within an app so streaming the pages in is extremely slow and sometimes crashes. I got the service as the white dwarf mags were only 3 months behind the magazine releases but now I think they realised that it may have been hurting white dwarf sales and have not released anything in the vault service in months. It is disappointing to see the massive slow down in releases, the service is not compelling at all anymore.

Thank you both for calling out the lack of crediting! It's bugged me from the beginning of the platform being released. When brilliant, talented people like Hatty are clearly working so hard to produce quality content (and are evidently being overworked into the deal), the barest minimum you can do if acknowledging that person's creative input. I don't know any equivalently sized organisation in the arts that does this and it's frankly shameful when you consider the number of freelance actors and designers that will have worked on these projects and rely on crediting to help in securing future work on different projects.

Like in COD when you die they put up quotes that made up in game characters say and think that it really makes the mind jog when in reality it’s just dumb and means nothing. Like there are thousands of actually good quotes in real life and in Warhammer books that they could use but nooooo they just make something up to sound “enlightened” and “deep”.

My absolute biggest gripe with most of their CGI made animations is they have to add this GODAWFUL shaky cam for every freaking action scene. Watching Angels of Death (main series) was a headache inducer, which is unfortunate as it was for the most part pretty good enough. And it's the same movement of shaky cam too! All, except for a few like Pariah Nexus. But yet, even that one has an annoyance of those unneeded "chapter breaks" that serve no real purpose other than to pan out time.
