    Scotty Kilmer Very wise words on this upload Scotty. My son wanted a Alfa romeo for his first car. He liked the look of them. I eventually talked him into a 2003 Suzuki swift 😂 He HATED it at first but that little car went on trouble free for 3 years before he got another car. Japanese is usually the way to go for reliability. Used to love VW but modern V dubs just like modern BMWs are garbage. Great advice my man. ☺ 🖒 Love ur vids here in the UK

    Thing is, there is this two edge sword....if a mechanic loves his Toyota, do we need to be a mechanic to want to own one? I mean, It's like seeing a mechanic from a Ford dealership driving a Chevy truck back and forth to work. ???? I know a guy who owns a Ford truck and works as a mechanic at a Chevy dealership. ???

    Toyotas often end up over priced for what you get too just due to their presumed reputation for reliability. There are plenty of superior options to the Camry you could get for a cheaper price so that's another thing people should consider.

    I wish I had listened to him. Almost a year ago I dumped my savings into an American SUV with high mileage vs getting a Toyota car. It was a hard decision because I wasn't sure what I was going to be using the vehicle for (you can't haul things in a Corolla). But now I've come to realize I'm not going to be hauling things and my once great deal has cost me in repairs what I paid for the thing to begin with. Now I can't muster enough savings to get something better. And this is repairs ON TOP of repairs I have done myself (some thanks to Scotty) that saved me thousands to begin with. Had I bought a decent Corolla I'd have been able to get on with my life and use my money to much more productive (and enjoyable) things. Part of the reason is I grew up in a family that loved Toyotas (esp corollas) and was sick of them. But now I know why they liked them, they weren't stupid, and I'll never let emotions affect my car buying decisions again.

    TheTardis157 bmw has large fleet of different models, however there are some models that are very much reliable with a proper service history, these vehicles are very expensive to maintain, and this is exactly why they are not considered the best for long term ownership, but I still think they are in better economic position than Mercedes Benz, now they will definitely bankrupt your bank account, Mercedes are for millionaires.

    Monaco C hey don’t buy a bmw if you’re broke is a true statement,🤔??? Why am I cancerous for speaking the truth, yes I drove a BMW X6M, and I owned a Lexus as well, the bmw is a premium high performance vehicle, they are very sensitive, and if the owner doesn’t have the money to do schedule maintenance 🤷🏽‍♂️of course the vehicle will become unreliable, and like I said before these vehicles have been neglected by many owners who don’t follow up on schedule maintenance, and it’s not cheap, I’ve been driving this bimmer for 3 years and it’s very reliable because I go above it’s maintenance requirements, I daily drive which means I fall under the sever maintenance, I change my oil every 3 months no matter the mileage, I go for maintenance check up every 6 months the average driver who drive regular v6 Honda or Toyota shouldn’t consider a high performance turbo charged vehicle unless he’s ready to pay more, it’s that simple, you have to pay to play, and the x6m is a monster in disguise, mimics an suv but will utterly destroy the average vehicle in a race 567 horses, it makes no sense to buy a high performance vehicle and then cry about reliability, because these vehicles are reliable, they are just a different animal that is very expensive to maintain, a lot of used bmw drivers cry because they buy a used and abused bimmer, if they been neglected they will behave like a lemon model this is why service history is important.

  • @mcgyverb1664

    @mcgyverb1664

    Monaco C hey apologies accepted Scotty is giving out good advice on these videos but I just think people are not making proper decisions when they are buying a vehicle, plus experience is something that we all have to buy, many people find themselves in bmw nightmare because they didn’t do their research, bmw do have some faulty models, and so does every vehicle manufacturer, but well maintained model will be reliable.

    Well I see lots of 6th gens on craigslist, mostly base models with high KM and not looked after. Also automatics. Its just a bit hard to find a clean manual Si that hasnt been molested. Went and looked at one and the transmission was making grinding sounds. If you can find one that doesnt have high km and for a decent price jump on it. I would go for a 6th over 7th. 7th gens especially years 2000-2002 are the worst. Research on google the worst years and you will see. Almost everyone on CL and FB marketplace all have no plates and currently not insured or driven because they have issues. If you want a 7th look at years 2003-2005 they are apparently the better ones but still take it for a test drive and go through all the gears and make sure there is no tranny issues.

    My recommendations for a first vehicle? 1 - '92 and up Honda civic. According to people i've talked to, these are the easiest to wrench on. I read a comment somewhere that on the '92 to '95 model, a 10 inch, 12 inch, and a 14 inch wrench can take apart 90% of the car. Civics are also a lot of fun, even in their worst condition. My only honda so far was a '91 Civic DX special edition sedan, that i paid 500$ for as a winter beater. The kid i bought it off of didn't tell me the head gasket was broken, so the car overheated after the coolant bled out. It didn't live to see the end of winter, but I didn't care. It survived long enough. 2 - '88 - '98 Chevrolet C/K 1500 OR GMC Sierra 1500 Also very easy to wrench on, and if you have the 350 V8 engine, VERY EASY to get parts for in North America. Plus, these trucks are virtually indestructible. There's a reason you still see tons of these 20-30 year old trucks, some still in showroom condition. You want to get menial tasks done involving a truck, this is the truck you want. However, Consider that gas mileage and gas prices are very high so gas will eat up your budget harder than the insurance will. However the longevity of these vehicles will mean you won't be spending money on a new vehicle anytime soon. 3 - Pretty much Any Mazda B-series mini-truck. Mini-trucks are practically cheating in the automotive world. These things are capable of doing any moving job for very little gas. My brother's first vehicle was an '89 Mazda b2200 and he drove that thing for a few years. He sold it to a guy in 100 mile house, BC (where he served in the RCMP) and when he left for Vancouver Island about 7 years later...the guy who bought his truck was STILL driving it. You might point out that the Mazda B-series and the Ford Ranger are the same truck. Ford's earlier Rangers are good starters, but apparently the newer ones are meant to be disposable. Also, my mechanic discovered that around the year 2000, Ford stopped putting their trade-ins back on the lot, they began destroying them in order to keep backyard mechanics from getting parts easily, and forcing ford owners to buy new trucks. A dick move perhaps, but did ford need a bailout back in '08? 4 - Pretty much any Toyota Camry Toyota's track record might be the best of any car manufacterer. The Camry is a solid sedan with one goal - Get you around, point A to Point B. If you don't care about what you drive and you only want something that's going to get you around and almost never breaks down, Get a Camry. Or a Corolla. My auntie, who doesn't know jack about cars, drove an '05 Corolla for a long time, and then bought an '05 Camry. To her it's the perfect car. 5 - Pretty much any Jeep Cherokee You want to go 4-wheeling? Check. Want longevity? Check. Only have about 2 grand to spend? Check. Easy to fix and a large aftermarket for parts? You want the Jeep Cherokee model. these things are all over the place, and they can 4x4 pretty much anywhere. Also, there's lots of 20-30 year old ones still cruising the city streets, meaning these things can last a long time. However, since they're popular for 4-wheeling, odds are the previous owners have abused them. So make sure a good mechanic does a Pre-Purchase inspection so you don't get a cherokee that some guy drowned in a mud bog a few summers back.

Not even a hiccup! Jeez, and here you can't rely on brand reliability alone, people here find water in their fuel and often go without 4 or 5 oil changes and basically never buy air filters. And when they do service it, it's because they decided to sell it for the same price they got it. Mk4 Golfs cost the same price the last 8 years! Ridiculous! And somehow ALL of them have JUST UNDER 120k miles, nevermind the fact that it's spitting black stuff, the CE light is stuck on, and the seats are SHREDDED.

    The GT86,BRZ,FRS’s are absolutely bullet proof! There’s an Instagram clip of one of them completely smashed into a ball but it still drove and turned along with the headlights still working! Definitely seems like a fantastic celica successor I bet it gets good gas mileage too. Then it must be an awesome first car

    My friend was looking for a car 3 years ago. I told him to buy a toyota but he ended up with a used BMW 5 series. He was half broke most of the time but he really enjoyed the ride. Fast forward to 2019, he passed away just after the new year. It was a terrible news but looking back I am happy that he at least enjoyed his 5 series for the last 3 years of his life.

    The best first car to buy is a old Ford crown victoria. Bought mine when I was 17 and 9 year later its still running like the first day.

    My first car was a 1994 Nissan Sentra. My mom never changed the oil or cared for the maintenance and abused the poor thing but it was very reliable. Great first car $27 on insurance and $17- $20 to fill up the tank $27 with the gas prices high. Oh how I felt rich with that car cause it never gave me issues and saved me money. For my second car i had a 2002 Honda civic. When I got that thing it had 200,000 Miles. It was driven to Florida to California many times. Driven to Vegas los Angeles and all over the bay area sometimes that same week and it kept running even if it had been in 3 accidents before and was salvaged twice. Eventually I sold it to a friend for like $1,000 and she also drives everywhere. For my third car i got a 2011RAV4 limited and it is treated better than the other one. It was a little pricey I got it at $20,000 in 2017 but at 14,000 Miles and the previous owner was rich as in had a corporation in Malibu and owned property in Malibu rich and it came with all the upgrades you could get it was recently smogged and the registration was recently paid so I only paid $15 to the DMV. It had an upgraded backup camera and old fashion radio was ripped off and a screen was installed. The tires were brand new and they had installed an extra large JBL speaker. All my friends got a car at the same time and had problems with their car but my RAV4 has been so wonderful to me and hasn't given me any issues.

    Very good advice. Back in the 80's, my first car was a '74 Gremlin ($400.) that didn't move very well, but did move enough to get me to work (sometimes). However, as long as I kept gas in it, it was a nice hangout on a hot Summer day as the A/C would freeze the interior in minutes. My second and third cars were purchased about six months after the Gremlin, and were very dependable. I got a '78 Subaru Leone ($50.00 and with good metal all around). My friends dad saw me walking across town, and stopped to ask me if I wanted it. He also took the time to show me how to inspect a car that I was interested in. He also told me that if I wanted a project car (he knew that I was interested in the next car) that I needed reliable transportation first. A week later I also picked up a '63 Chrysler 300 (non letter) Four door hardtop ($400.) that hadn't been driven in ten years. A few parts, and a lube job later, and the car was ready for years of reliable service. That car started my love of '57 through '77 Chrysler products. I learned very quickly NOT to use the Chrysler in town, unless I needed room for passengers, as it couldn't pass a gas station. But it got 23 MPG on the highway. The Subaru never got less than 26 MPG, and on the highway it got 33. Neither car ever left me stranded. Even when I killed the battery in the 300 (I was 18 and had FM radio), I was lucky enough to have one of the few automatics with a rear pump, and was able to roll the car down the hill to start it. The Subaru's engine has been transplanted in three other Subarus since, and I don't know if it still exists. The Chrysler was last seen at a car show in Wisconsin about two years ago, but looks much better than when I had it... And it didn't look bad 32 years ago.

    I've had both makes and my Civic started falling apart at 70k and I had a Toyota that the head gasket blew at 130k. Sure they might be reliable, but they definitely are not prone to issues. I've had VW's last well over 300k.

    I completely agree with you, Scotty. My first car when I was in high school was a 20 some odd year old Benz C280 that rode and ran great but, like you said, had higher repair costs than say if it were a domestic or Japanese car. I now drive a Chevy sedan because I have 4 years of driving experience to my name and you grow to love them even though those dont look like much.
