I thought I knew what lather was. Then I watched this video. I then proceeded to whip up the most bodacious lather I could have imagined, and got the best shave of my life. You're the man, Rich. Thanks!

Me, too. I know that using this technique will take my lathers from a mediocre level, at best, to a "fantastic" level, increasing my enjoyment of wet-shaving much, much more.

Great video. There is definitely an art to this. I am 55 yrs old and have always shaved in the shower with whatever soap and razor I had available but now that I am older, I can’t see in the little mirror anymore and I’m tired of shitty shaves so I hopped on KZread and found your video. I purchased some $18 Vikings blade and a $35 parker badger brush and and a shave bowl I found on eBay with ridges. I may have added too much water on my first round so I will try again tomorrow. Thanks young man for sharing!

heather...as a fellow gal let me hook you up with some advice...start shaving your face. no joke. I am a hair shy of 52 years old and my face has never felt smoother and healthier...EVER. your facial hair wont get dark and hard like a dudes does...that's a myth. chase that tallow soap with some witch hazel and a nice balm. getcha some tallow based soaps with lanolin and watch your face just glow. just saying. I straight razor shave legs and face. de razor my armpits.

Highonimmi, thanks for your comment. But shaving is different for a man then it is for a woman. We have a thicker beard, along with shaving for decades . Plus we have male testosterone which makes our beard thicker. But women always think that man's shaving is the same as their legs.

  • @highonimmi

I have yet to meet a female who thinks their hair is the same. the lather she is talking about is prolly not for the hair it's for how it feels on our skin. I could use shave oil on my legs but, I prefer the silky feel of the plush lather. I use a lathering soap on my face for the same reason as my legs plus, I can see where I need to shave without wearing my glasses. now, I have known a few gals who looked like a wookie they had so much hair on their face. kinda looked like Chewbacca with a rack.

This video deserves a million views. The wet shaving community is so passionate and opinionated. Richard does not disappoint! In the first 3 minutes he calls out wet shavers across the globe and then proceeds to build a lather for 30 minutes to prove them wrong!!! I commend this KZreadr and will no longer shave unless I have spent a half hour building up a lather. Maybe my shaving brushes will not last as long, but my lathers will be frothier. I have the funds to buy more brushes and shaving soaps. That's half of the fun anyway! Cheers

I totally get what you just said!!! I too used to shave in the mornings... a quick shave to get rid of the stubble and I’m off to work. Now, shaving is a ritual for me after a hot bath at the end of the day to totally unwind. The wonderful scents, the sound of the brush swirling in my bowl (btw, a coarse bowl gets the lather going much quicker), and the shave itself. What a perfect way to end a tough day at work!

What you said at 15 and a half minutes in about how shaving used to be a chore, but now you do it after work to enjoy it... I'm there now. My girlfriend got my a Merker Futur for Christmas last year after she saw me watching some of Geo Fat Boy's videos. I used to have shaving so much I'd just use a beard trimmer a few times a week to keep my face clean. Whenever I'd shave with a razor, I'd get awful razor burn. New blades would be better, but they only lasted comfortably for two or three shaves, and 5 carts are nearly 20 dollars. Now I can get 50 blades that last a week each for that price. I love shaving now. It's comfortable, relaxing and it feels incredible. The learning curve was not at al what I was expecting. I cut myself a few times the first few weeks, but it's so easy to get the hang of.

Thank you Rich - You are down-to-earth, frank , no BS or overselling -- it is what it is -- and you have correct - You are having fun making this video for us and helping with tips, not because you have to or need to; taking your time, sharing in an unrushed fashion. Hilarious! Appreciation for your shares. Yes. I am 1 week new to DE shaving and honestly "sold" and currently not getting a great lather. I have been using a Canadian brand DE light and long, beginner Saftey for 2 months and never knew what I was really missing....Being as coachable a possible, making mistakes and having fun and loving my Merkur 34C even more, over the tried and returned Viking Chieftan 5BC, Parker Variant and experimenting with razors... but the LATHER is important. Thanks. BTW--- love that you reference your brother in his conversion to DE --- I just convinced my oldest son in Air Force, who needs to shave daily for duty, as he was having rash and hates shaving with his cartridge, battery operated multiblade Gilette? Who didn't realize change blades often? Oh well.; it's OK. I just sent him an intro DE kit -- Now he will be watching this vid for lather. Making young men embrace the shave. Cheers and looking forward to my sample order of soaps from Stirling too.

I agree with you on bowl lathering vs face lathering. I think some people, depending on the type of water they have, can make similar lather, but for me and my water, bowl lathering is so much better because I can pump much more water and air into the mix to create the slickness and cushion I desire. I can't do that with face lathering.

Wow! Absolutely amazing how in-depth this video is about the level of knowledge and details the man puts in. I seriously appreciate and love this kind of approach! Totally agree that the more time and preparation I put into such process the better the end result will be. And besides, if done during evening time won't have to worry about none of it in the morning and have more productive time to put into other important things. Also my face won't look like I shaved with a dull lawnmower since I'm farily amateur to wet shaving with quality razors and sharp blades. Excellent video tutorial! Thank you Rich!

Rich, thanks for taking the time to make this video. I've been making lather from a soap puck in a mug and not very happy results. After this video I already started making better lather, by finding out what I was doing wrong.

That's about 5 times more lather then you need... Heck, i use a third of that and I shave my head too!

I love this method. Lots of work, but the lather is amazing. The only down side though is the lather gets kinda cold from all that whipping.

Great video. I've been having trouble lathering I've never used a bowl to lather so I have to try this. I had a question can you get this good of a lather if you didn't go to the soap bowl for the second load ? Meaning do I have to use this much soap ? Or did you just use that much soap to really show the lather? Also could I get this kind of a lather with a boar and a badger brush as well ?

I shave with a chubby 2 synthetic brush and the Fine bowl mentioned. My question is: should I use soap, cream, or does it matter for my lathering? Thanks

Drunk or not the skill is still obviously there and thats all that matters. Great video brother. The only man I know that adds a triple shot of Hennessy to his checklist for a great lather 😂 😆!

I have just received 96 Derby Shaving Soap sticks and 58 Palmolive shave stick soaps from a friend who has closed his barber shop down, will it be ok in 40 years time or will these shave sticks go rancid and is derby got a better smell than Arko and does it perform better than Arko.

Thanks for giving us permission to hit the soap more than once. You advise us to use a bowl that you instinctively know you should have and use no extra water at first. Don't shave in the morning, take some time. Thanks for this good video.
