The BEST ALTERNATIVE to the EAGLE ROCK LOOP | Backpacking the Buckeye Caney Creek Loop

December 29th, 2018 we hiked the Buckeye Caney Creek Loop in the Caney Creek Wilderness in Southwestern Arkansas. We parked at the Eastern Caney Creek Trailhead and walked the road north for 1 mile to the Buckeye Trailhead to start the hike. We hiked up Buckeye Mountain and continued to East Hanna Mountain before the trail descended to Katy Creek where we camped. The next morning we hiked the Eastern portion of the Caney Creek Trail back to the Eastern Caney Creek Trailhead.

Hey thank you! You will love this trail…it’s a great option if you only have one night to get away. The views are great and it’s a nice slice of Ouachita heaven out there. Enjoy!

This popped up on my recommendations and I had to watch. I had totally forgotten about this trail and may have to make a return to that area. I first hiked the Caney Creek Trail over 20 yrs ago, did that loop a year later, and the last time about 14 yrs ago. It's one of my favorites

Sure thing! I was jealous of your campsite! We didn’t start our hike until 11:30 so we were behind you guys.

I did this hike this weekend. My first time. Not as good as Eagle Rock but not bad for an overnight. You had much higher flow than we saw. And you got the good campsite! We slept on a terrible incline. I was sliding down all night. Your video skills have gotten better. And that’s saying something because this is a good video!

Oh sweet, glad you guys were able to make it out there. It’s a great trail. I agree...ERL is better, but this is a great overnight. Was it very busy out there? That stinks about your campsite.. I hate when I’m on an incline like that. Thanks for the compliment! I’ve learned a few things since this video! I’ve though about revisiting this trail soon...but we’ll see.

Timber rattlers do get big but watch out for their smaller meaner cousin, the pigmy rattker its aggressive but its rattle is so small its not a very loud rattle and they blend in with the ground cover better so watch your step

Man I’ve seen how big those things can get out there...so far I’ve only seen one snake...and it was a banded snake swimming in the river. Not to sure what it was.

@@TheNotLostNomad it’s about a 4.2 mile hike to the campsites and the falls if I recall correctly. I did that stretch in about 2 hours once and fet like I’d moved at a very focused pace (knowing I was doing an out and back on the Caney, I had the sun as a time limit, and would be able to enjoy the scenery on the way back). I can imagine spending anywhere from 2-4 hours in that stretch of the valley :)

So if I remember correct it’s only 11 miles for the full hike. There will be no water up on the ridge line for the first half of the hike but once you drop down there is water the whole way. You will run almost parallel to Caney Creek the whole way back to the trailhead.

What you guys think about that so called experienced hiker from Dallas who got lost for 6 days last year? Ive never hiked buckeye trail but know the area and think it was very suspicious how fast they started a go fund me page! If its legit his fist mistake was going alone! Second mistake was not taking along Comms! I'm a Ham Radio OP and never leave home without it! Its a big Ham Repeater on Talk Peak just south of there. 146.925 and should cover that area good even with a HT ( walkie talkie ). Matter of fact I was camped just south of Tall Peak once and kept in touch with a guy and his girlfriend who hiked Buckeye over 2 days. But we didn't use the 146.925 repeater we talked on simplex ( directly ) almost their whole trip! They kept me updated regularly. They didn't have any trouble even though it was raining! So I find it highly suspicious him getting lost for 6 days! Although an injury could easily explain it but Ive not heard that. WW5RM

I feel the exact same way...I try not to judge but one look at a map will tell you that if you pick one direction and walk you'll be out in a matter of a few hours. Either follow the ridge line or the creek and you'll eventually meet a road. There is too much going on that is questionable...maybe even some mental issues going on. Regardless, I'm glad it worked out ok and it didn't tarnish the reputation of a great trail.

@@TheNotLostNomad yeah I thought so too. Any direction you should hit some trail, road or land mark to give you something to indicate where you are. A seasoned hiker should be skilled enough to evaluate that in advance. Going alone is a high risk but its not Death Valley! I think I read that he had fell but not broken anything. A minor injury would slow you down but not keep you lost for 6 days! It all seemed highly suspicious to me at the time! Ive tried to find more info about it but can't. It might still be an on going investigation.
