The Best Adobe Alternatives in 2023

Ғылым және технология

Adobe is a powerhouse in the graphics industry with programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Substance and Premiere being industry standards. For a variety of different reasons, from cost to a dislike of subscriptions or just disliking Adobe in general, you may be looking for an alternative. In this video we look at alternatives, both paid and free (and often open source) to Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere/After Effects and Substance Designer/Painter, then close with a large list of alternative choices maintained by Kenney of Kenney.nl fames.

Personally, I hope the subscription model bankrupts every software company that tries it, especially those that have been in business for years and had mere incremental updates to their software. If you do any software development you'll understand why that angers me so much.

unfortunately, the leech who invented this crap, permeated every single industry... "recurring revenue stream" is the term, everything that can be tuned into subscription and vendor-locked - IS. Ink and paper, computer and mobile software of all kinds (some don't belong in subscription category at all!), but even cars now... As I always say... too many salesmen, not enough woodchippers.

You convinced me to get Affinity Photo and Designer. I like the software a lot, though I'm still unlearning some workflows from Photoshop. Wish Designer had a layout (known as flexbox in web) tool to easily scale and update elements, though I'm thinking of using Penpot for such designs in the future.

  • @gamefromscratch

Yeah there are certainly some workflows that don't translate well between the two apps and there are some odd and occasionally glaring missing features, but once you get used to it, the Affinity apps punch WELL above their price tags. Hope you over all are happy with my recommendation. I'm pretty sure you should be able to do the scaling you describe. What exactly is it you are trying to accomplish.

Two things that I don't like about Affinity since I use them a lot: 1) Batch edits to files are a bit convuluted and even with their macros there are a lot of quirks, such as it auto-cropping any images that you resize, which already needed a convuluted workflow to do. 2) There's no option to slice an image along the guides. This has been noted and asked for from Affinity users for _years_ and they haven't added it for whatever internal problems it'd cause. As someone who works with pixel arts sprite sheets (and I don't want to use Libresprite since I also work with other things) both of those things come up quite a bit. Oh, and a bonus one: For whatever reason the Pixel Art scaling tool, as cool as it could've been, blurs the hell out of any images with transparency since it doesn't use nearest neighbor. If it used NN then I'd have just created a macro for using that command than the convuluted way of creating a filled box exactly double the dimentions of the image, 'uncropping' the image to that size, scaling the 'background' layer to the new size using an specific filter to change the size based on a formula, and then deleting the box before outputing that result, which still gets cropped anyway. That's all in the action that I created so that I could batch scale a folder of x1 image to x2. Naturally, doing it manually produces the desired result, but I didn't want to have to do that for 300+ files. Other that those very specific issues, and the fact that it keeps nagging me to upgrade when I'm not ready to do so yet, I consider it a great program for the price!

There's nothing really to compete with After Effects where you can import video and then digitally paint over with raster effects apart from Adobe Photoshop... TVPaint is just way too expensive while Krita and Clip Studio just don't cut it for me and I had a quick look at Natron from your video but it's more like Da Vinci Resolve. Hopefully someone can suggest something I've never considered before?

Affinity Photo is like 80% there, 3 can surely be a good Photoshop replacement, Selections are a bit clunky, its taking up to a second to display your layer preview, you can't change your colors or brush on a hotkey, it needs to sort out some basics still Designer feels definitely much easier to use than Illustrator.

Great video. I have always avoided Adobe stuff and use some of the apps you mentioned. Affinity designer is hard to beat but I hate affinity photo and use Pixelmator Pro instead which is awesome. Apple Motion must be the best motion graphics and animation app in terms of price/value and I use it all the time, along with one time purchase Final cut. Moho Pro is absolutely fantastic for 2d animation. I use unreal a lot for animation too and the biggest news for years for me was the resurrection of Lightwave 3D, which is still my 3d app of choice as Blender just seems a nightmare to use in comparison. Lightwave can currently be bought for 500 with 2023 coming out as a free upgrade at the end of the year. Everybody has seen a ton of lightwave over the years in hundreds of films and tv shows but it fallen behind with neglect over the years but it’s still kick ass and just going to get better. Anyway I manage to make a living without subscriptions and over about 20 years I have spent a fraction of going the Adobe route. Do I miss out on things? Of course but I am not tied to Adobe. If i had sunk 10’s of thousands of dollars into them then I don’t have any flexibility plus a lot of people who use adobe stuff tend to use their stock library and things start to look a bit samey. Having my own toolkit makes my work less ‘Adobified’

What I mean by that is, DaVinci Resolve combines Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, Media Encoder, and it's own section for color correction cause of how good it is since it started out as a color correction plugin, all being in just 1 app. While Clip Studio Paint combines Photoshop (as in Raster drawing, NOT photo editing), illustrator (Vector drawing), Animate, and also for comic for how amazing comic is since it started out as Comic plugin all in just 1 app. Lol XD

@@gamefromscratch I agree. Affinity is great. Although I prefer Illustrator.

Affinity photo costs $70 not 50, and you forgot to mention the fact that the major 2 version was not a free update.

Yep, version 2 has some nice things, but still lacking in features compared to Inkscape 1.3, so no, affinity will not get me to upgrade.

I think you could have probably done an entire video for each adobe product, there are so many alternatives out there it get pretty nutty at times lol Still it's always awesome to see people talking about alternatives to subscription based software, the devil's pricing model

Hitfilm was recently bought out and nearly abandoned. Runs like shit and isn't getting upgraded/bugfixed. Stay away!

Its unfortunate too, as it was the closest thing to an After Effects clone.

The only reason I use Photoshop, Premiere and After Effects are plugins. I hate Adobe products. They're outdated in every regard. Only plugins keep them going. If it wasn't for plugins I would dump Adobe in a flash. Resolve just doesn't have enough features to cover all the plugins I use. The company itself is not exactly a saint either.
