    Thanks for the awesome video! Appreciate what you guys do for the offroad community. Great to see real time results And a few questions I saw in the comments; 1: will your lights die out twice as quickly? -Honestly, would they die out Quicker? Maybe, you are providing full power to them now instead of it being choked down, so I guess they would burn out a tad quicker, but nothing drastic, maybe instead of 10yrs out of a set, you may get 8 or 9yrs 2: voltage difference vs amperage. -yes, the amperage does increase with the harness as you’re drawing directly from the battery instead of the switch, so amperage does rise which then provides brighter lighting, this also helps take the load off the switch to stop the common switch melting issue most of us XJ’rs deal with, and puts the load on the relay instead 3: will this work on other vehicles aside from xj? -yes indeed, will plug into any H4 lighting circuit, you may need to extend the power wire to reach your battery terminals though. Can be modified to work on other single bulb-dual filament applications as well with a different pigtail. Appreciate your support! -Happy Trails!

    Tim. You wont notice a voltage drop unless there is a load applied. Current is similar to water in pipes. Voltage is pressure and amps is flow. The older smaller wires will cause more restriction so when under load there wont be enough flow to maintain pressure. (Voltage drop) So it will then demand more amperage to make up lost of voltage to maintain wattage (voltsxamps) which then will cause fuses to pop or things to melt.

    (Voltage drop) exactly sir. One of the best analogy/examples, explanations, I've heard anyone state that wasn't my father, a carrier electrician as well, like you im sure. It is like when someone tries to use a vacum or leaf blower that pulls 8-10.5 amps on 110/120V supply, it simply won't work at most the time at 150-200ft away, but in reality actually will work to an extent just so long as you go to a better or proper amount of wire/gauge but then that would usually consist of (at that length anyway) would turn into or consist of 20A style ended cords to match that voltage demand usually but could be switched into or adapted up to 110/120V cord ends male and female ends alike and be made to work. I guess getting back to it, you nailed it about supply and demand!👍

    I just installed this harness into my '99 Cherokee. The increase in light output is significant. Although I don't have a light meter I did measure the amp draw of the low beams before and after the installation. Stock = 3.9A. With new harness = 4.6A. I highly recommend this upgrade. One thing to be aware of is if your XJ came with factory fog lights, this harness is NOT plug and play. You must splice the stock 20g red fog light relay trip wire from the old driver side harness (plug) into the blue wire of the new harness. If you fail to make this splice you will not be able to go from high beam to low beam. The high beams will remain "stuck" on high until you turn the headlights completely off then back on again.

    As always, fantastic, informative, efficient video. Love that BleepinJeep hasn't descended into the hand-waving Vloggersphere world of clickbait videos. $25 upgrades are pretty awesome!! I do something similar to this when I install aftermarket light bars, auxiliary lights, etc. The dual grounds, dual relays, and uprated wiring is all part of a solid plan to improve lighting. One thing I tend to do is run grounds back to a union, then a thicker ground cable back to the battery ground - that way I can avoid creating a 'clean' ground (aka, removing factory paint, galvanizing, etc). In my Jeep, I have a copper buss for my grounds and one for my 'hot' - both with fusable links to protect the rest of the system. This way, I can keep the connections to the battery clean and simple. I'd link to a product, but I just make my own from scraps in my shop!

    I just did this upgrade and it was awesome. It was VERY Easy, AND it feels like I'm driving a whole new car! I drove to a town at night in the middle of winter a couple years back and was TERRIFIED The whole way, and have avoided driving at night outside of city lights because of it. I can see hundreds of feet down the road (before I could only see like maybe 30) and I can see reflective signs WAY down the road. It really is amazing. I'm so thankful.

Update: I ordered my harness for $25 shipped and installed it with a couple sylvania xtravisions on my 01 Cherokee and man what a difference! Definitely one of the best upgrades I've done to my jeep. Thanks for the video, never knew this was a thing and I'm glad i went for it. Just make sure to adjust your headlights properly when done to truly take advantage of your headlights new output.

    They ended up installing heaters in LED street lights here in the north because of the snow issue. So much for saving energy! I was told the heater cost more than the old traffic lights. Funny how these people push technology on us that DOESNT work. Oh, the heaters in the traffic lights SHORTEN the life of the LEDs too. Way to go! The first thing I said I would do on those is switch back to the older style headlights ( not really old).

    Nice, upgrade, that is a big difference. I bet you could get even more light out of them if you made a better ground for those two independent grounds. You need to sand away all the paint under there and get a nice bare metal, then spray paint over top of the whole thing once it's bolted back in to keep it from rusting out.

    I thought that if you increase Amperage (Current) you lose Voltage. In other words, to get more Amps you need more Volts, but volts are limited to ~14v. I guess better grounding (if possible) would keep the Voltage maxed out and demand a touch more from the alternator? Someome riddle me this.

  • @880wheeler

    @880wheeler

    @ think of it this way. Think of a water hose. Amperage is volume, voltage is pressure. Basically the factory harness has too small of wires and cant supply the amperage the headlights need to operate at full potential. This harness replaces the small wires with much larger ones.

    Hey, GREAT video! Thanks for doing it. My XJ's headlights were horrid. It felt like I was like driving in the 1960s. I wanted an upgrade, but I didn't want to upgrade to anything that didn't create heat for the reasons you mentioned. I decided on the H4 5x7 Halogen Headlight Upgrade from K Suspensions and also ordered this wire harness upgrade. Glad I did! When I started the upgrade I noticed that the headlights on the XJ had "H4" written on them! What? Duh. Since the output was so crappy I'd just assumed... Yes, a rookie mistake, but I'm a rookie so I've got that going for me! =) So, as it turns out the headlights had already been "upgraded", but the just housings and bulbs, NOT the wiring harness. I was not impressed with the H4s! It made me think that upgrading to a Halogen setup wasn't such a good idea after all. I pressed on, but now I have bulb housings and H4 bulbs as back-ups, lol. I did the dead-simple upgrade which was a breeze-although one of the spade connecters inside the fuse housing wasn't fully crimped and the wire just slipped right out and I had to struggle to fix it which slowed me down-but the difference in the light output was significant! Like, "Holy-Crap-That's-A-HUGE-Difference" significant. I can't imagine what the output must've been like with the stock setup before the previous owner put in the H4s. Must've been like driving in the 1950s? Bottom line is, upgrading housings and bulbs is obviously not enough. This wiring harness makes all the difference in the world! Highly recommend this wire harness upgrade. You won't be disappointed. [Minor point, but "wind chill" doesn't have any affect on inanimate objects. It only affects living this with flesh. Think about it. If it did affect objects then your glass thermometer would read a lower temperature when the wind is blowing. But it doesn't. Anyway, these bulbs definitely generate enough heat to keep the snow from accumulating.]

  • @bleepinjeep

    @bleepinjeep

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comments! In regards to the wind chill you are right in part. It gets a little fuzzy because the term "wind chill" orginated to describe the effect wind has on exposed skin, like your face. I was using it in terms of common diction and not so much the meteorological sense... and it is true that wind chill does not effect inanimate objects that are at ambient temperature. It does, however effect "the rate of heat loss from an object or body" that either produces heat or was warmed up. Wind chill would not effect, say the antenna on my Jeep which produces no heat, and is not heated. It does effect things like headlights, a muffler, or a radiator. It can pull heat away from these objects quickly. Reducing their temperature to the ambient temperature outside. Which means if cold air flowing over the headlights wicks away what little heat they produce the snow starts building up on the lenses instead of melting away.

    I'm running a kit like that from some other company along with the Silverstars and it's decent. Nothing excellent but for a 27 year old vehicle it's good. The Silverstars were a nice upgrade as well if you've thought about them. Great path where the light shines, it's very wide on low beam which I like. Although I think they've gone up since I got mine. $25 a piece about 14 years ago.

    The wiring harness can actually support even the 130w bulbs but in my experience, these high wattage bulbs have a short lifespan and quit on you when you need it the most. The added brightness from the harness even with the stock 60w bulb is the better choice because of its longer lifespan.

    Awesome video, I'll pick one up for my XJ. You need to measure the voltage drop under load (with the lights hooked up). When you measured the voltage you had the lights disconnected so there was no current flowing (very little through the multimeter) so you wouldn't expect much voltage drop. It's actually kinda surprising you got that MUCH (0.3V) no load voltage drop!

    I was sure that tension (voltage) wouldn't change. What had really changed is the current (amperage) provided to the headlights. I expect it had doubled now as opposed as what it was previously. Thicker wire gauge also helps by having less resistance than the factory harness. LED are heating in a very different way than incandescent lights.LEDs have a far more concentrated heat which have to be pulled away to prevent them to burn out. Incandescent bulbs are heating in a more distributed way. Just be prepared to replace your incandescent headlights more often as they will worn out between two and four times faster than you are used too.

JW speaker recently released heated lens models to resolve this issue. There's a board on the light that turns on and off the heater automatically, reducing power consumption to only when its demanded. Might be worth checking out.

We don't get much snow around here so LED headlights aren't really a deal breaker for me. But I really like those heated lamps, if they weren't so expensive.

    @@bleepinjeep for your application, HID projectors may be a better solution. High output, and lots of heat to melt the snow. Downside is increased power draw, but you're needing that heat that LEDs don't really create.

    Super glad you sprung for it and it worked out for ya! I've said it before but I really think you should revisit the "how to aim a headlight" section of your "how to change a headlight" vid. Think this is a pretty standard search people (should) make after watching all your vids and lifting their jeeps. Mine is all whacky and finding info on this is tough. Think it will fit right in with these headlight vids you're doing. If you don't wanna do it I'll have to make it myself lol... I just need to ask Matt how to do it.

    LED's typically don't need the harness upgrade since they pull so much less power. Also depending on how they are designed they may not need full alternator voltage for full brightness.

I was impressed enough to immediately purchase the harness (not just from the light demo, but from the install). Buying was a painless process, and they take Paypal (safe/secure). THANKS SO MUCH! ...I'll do a follow up comment reply when it arrives and I've got it installed.

    They are a massive improvement, the issue with XJ's is they don't use a relay from factory, along with shitty wire. The Headlamp power goes from the battery, all the way into the switch inside the cab, then back to the lights, all with low guage wire. Plus halogens are much more sensitive to voltage then most people would think. If i pull some numbers out of my ass to make a example, a 10% voltage drop might result in 20% less light, or something along those lines.

    Your voltage reading will show a much larger drop if it were tested with a load on the circuit. That's where it's all at, larger wires to carry the current. I'd bet if you put an ammeter in line, there would be a greater current flow.

    Make sure those relays stay dry as I don't think they are sealed. I have an identical harness that I bought a few years ago and the relays got moisture in them somehow and would occasionally fail when trying to kick down from high beams and suddenly lose all lights until I killed them all and turned them back on. I just replaced them with some standard Bosch type relays.

  • @ehjones
    @ehjones5 жыл бұрын

    Hey, could you try out turning on the sidelights only with the ignition on? On my ‘93 this causes the low beam relay of the new harness to click rapidly. I think it’s how it’s been designed to light the low beams dimly in this state. No one should drive with only sidelights on so shouldn’t really be a problem.

    Interesting result, shows how wimpy the wiring is in some stock vehicles. It would be really easy to make your own upgraded harness. It's just a couple of relays and a better grade of heavier gauge wire, plus going a more direct route to the battery eliminates some of the resistance in the wimpy factory wiring. $25 for that harness though is not unreasonable for convenience sake.

    The main reason why you get brighter light is that the harness will bypass your interior light switch so it no longer piggy backs power off of that. It now pulls straight from the battery. That's also why you will no longer have flickering too if you use upgraded led headlights.

    @BleepinJeep It’s like u turn sylvania basic bulbs, into silverstar ultra. Without changing the bulbs. Man what a huge difference. Now with aftermarket headlight wire harness. Would these harness make the bulbs last longer? Like instead of oem bulbs that doesn’t produce that much power when it came as a factory that last long around 6 years or so. Instead, have a sylvania 1 silverstar ultra. That they are better brighter bulbs but last around 2 years or less. Because they produce more power. Can these aftermarket headlight bulb harness, increase the longevity of the bulbs that makes them brighter than compare to basic bulbs? Same goes to led/hid. Can we get the best of both worlds? Brighter and last longer for halogens, instead of sacrifice for brighter and better but less longevity, and less bright and less best but better longevity.
