I have an Eskimo EVO2 and an Eskape 2600. I've fished with people who have others and they are impressed with the Eskape. I like the EVO2(discontinued) for its fishing space, but it's a little more work to set up..

Awesome job Alex on this video ! I’ve had Clam 1 man traps and I had the Otter Hideout also along with a Otter Cottage. I sold my Hideout and Cottage and got the Cotttage Pro XT 1200 and it is awesome for a 1 man ! It’s not tall for sure but I’m short I put it on my Smitty sled and it pulls like a dream I’ve even hooked my Jet sled behind it and even pulling 2 with the Smitty it pulls easily in snow. What I didn’t like about the Hideout and my old Cottage was the front door access and always stepping over your stuff. With the Pro XT you gotta love the side doors. Also with my Hideout I always had a draft problem when windy even with the improved skirts. There’s so many great shacks now but I still think Otter is the best overall. 👍 Thanks again for the hard work !

On the Eskimo vent, with the shack back to the wind , it circulates the warm air from the top of the shack through out the shack enabling you to turn down your heater even on the coldest day. Well developed design! I put my Eskimo seats in my boat 2 summers ago, after about 4 hours of fishing with a couple friends in their 70s, one says to me without prompting," this seat is comfortable"! Very similar to Millennium seats that have proven themselves in deer stands for years. I've replaced too many boat seats that lost their cushion.

Very well done and informative video. In my lifetime I’ve owned 3 Clams and 1 Eskimo (not the models above) and my latest has been the Otter above. IMO the overall build is way better than the other shacks I have owned. I enjoy not having to extend the poles I often move a lot when fishing. Clams pole extension system like above is a bad design imo. Struggles to work correctly and lock in and always in the way and catching on my clothes. I’m 6’6” 300 lbs and the Otter has plenty of room. I think too much height you catch too much wind.

Excellent Review! That little black bag in the Clam is to store the LED bar cable when not in use. Last years model X100 (which I own) is a true one flip shelter as well. The sacrifice for one flip was given up for a taller trap. I do have concerns about the vent placement in the Eskimo. Flipovers are always back into the wind and that vent on a windy day would appear to be very drafty.

  • @AlexTimm

Thanks for the info on the bag, I thought maybe something for those wires. You can see in the video I decided to throw the other 2 bar lights in and instead just route them down to the battery and I think that will work, so now the bag is freed up for something else 👍 Yeah the vent on the Eskimo is a weird design, not sure why they didn't put them on the sides like all the others ? Good to know on the non xt x100 being a true one flip 👍

For those considering a 1 man pop-up… the Velcro windows are a must if you; fish with others and need to communicate, smoke and need to vent, keep fish and need to drop outside of hut, drink beers and need to drop empties outside of hut. I own both Eskimo 1-man and Clam 2-man, Eskimo is better in my opinion

Great reviews! Insulated flips are just to heavy for this guy. I can pull my Frabill recon for miles and not even break a sweat fully loaded and run 3 holes and a camera hole and still have room. Had dozens of shacks but always end up back in the Recon with it's smaller brother for an even lighter version if it's gonna be a hole hopping day. Think they call it the ice hunter now? Those two and a Clam TC hub covers all my ice needs and all fit in my car. Good luck on the ice.

I got an Eskimo Wide 1 XR also, specifically because of the 17.5 sq ft of fishable area. I fish 2 poles on either side with a Panoptix in the middle. No way I could fit that in the others. I thought about the Clam Legend XT Ice Team, but I am usually pulling by hand early ice and late ice, and the lighter weight combined with the much larger fishable area of the Eskimo made it my winner. I love it. And after a couple practice flips with the front bar, I have it down where I can open/expand it in less than 15 seconds and close it up in less than 30 sec. No issues running and gunning.

I run a Livescope in the middle and two holes on the side as well. On top of that, a Mr Buddy Heater. Still spacious enough in case I have to get up and chase down my tip downs. I wish there was a way you can anchor it down though… When wind is blowing 10-12 mph, my flip over will move from time to time. I have to hold the poles just to stabilize myself haha. I’m on the lighter end of weight so that’s why. I don’t mind the Eskimo not having a back window. Doesn’t really bother me.

I was playing with it and was wondering how you “lock” it into Windbreak Mode. They didn’t have the pole on display so I felt like an idiot trying to lock it for 10 minutes 😂 I tried looking it up on the Eskimo website and on KZread and i didn’t find anything about it (I’m assuming because this flip over is new). Hey Alex I can’t tell you enough how much I’ve enjoyed watching your videos/ learned so much from them. I’ve been in the market for a year or so for a flip over style Ice shanty. My question to you is. When would you use a one man? Do you prefer two man for alone over nights? Do you think that shelter purely relays on room for comfort as well as ability to two the heavier shacks? As well from your experience, what is the good, bad and worst, if not just your over general preference over brands/ quality? Sorry if this was too much of a question😵‍💫 I’m sure you could make a video out of this at this point 🫠

The scenarios that I use and like a 1 man are when I am going out solo (which is very often) and trying to be ultra portable where I can just hook it with a tow bar to the back of my ATV and go spot to spot. It's also great for when conditions are just absolutely horrible out and I don't want to deal with a big hard sided house if I'm worried about getting stuck. And of course for early ice before I can get my ATV out, it is light enough I have no problem hand pulling it alone on the ice with a rope, or on a smitty sled if there is snow. I enjoy not having to pop up a hub and down every time I want to move, and it has the tub with all my gear already in it to make moving spot to spot easier. If I am going to do an overnight in a soft sided shelter I would do a Hub house with the foam floor mats and a cot, I wouldn't personally do the flip over becuse I like having space for a couple holes when the cot is out and still be able to stand up and move around - maybe even have a small table for a cooking station without feeling cramped. My current feeling based on what the offerings from the brands are is: Otter has high quality materials, and the best tubs, but they are quickly getting caught up to in the shelter material by Eskimo and Clam - and in the higher end Clam and Eskimo units right on par with Otter, plus even some newer and better features. Clam has by far the widest assortment, you can find nearly any size or feature set you want as an offering from them which is nice. Eskimo has some innovative features with the Wide series, and the ultra light and compact 2 person ones that they came out with this year (plus I think the largest side doors?). Clam has the best integrated lighting system either into the pole bars or the netting around the hub houses. Pros and cons across the board, I'd say they all have a good spot in a persons arsenal given a specific use case. Now 2 or more years ago I definitely would not have said that. And 2 years from now, I hope they all continue to improve, but feel like Otter is in a tough spot right now and is going to get passed up if they don't start innovating and adding some new features that the others have. I mean that 1 man Otter XT Hideout is the same and only 1 man flip over they have that came out back in October 2015, that's almost a decade old (but does go to show how good they did on it that it is still able to compete). Hope that helps a bit! Great questions!

@@AlexTimm amazing response I appreciate the help. One more if I can. Would you recommend getting into the live scope before a flip of if I have a hub style? I’m interest in both but I’m leaning towards the electronics since they get and stay pretty pricey. Would you recommend a beginner getting into the best live scope or slowly growing? I’m having a hard time finding the set up for me. I’m almost inclined to going for the best and buying and crying once! I love your videos and would love to see you reviewing more products! I have the cottage, the old wide 1 and the new wide one. I just picked up a clam kenai pro thermal one man for my grand daughter and have the clam voyager xt thermal on back order.....if it ever comes. The kenai is to small for me but perfect for her. I will never use it. But it is very light. I also have an old otter thermal lodge and two pop ups, one frabil and one eskimo outbreak 850. The old wide one eskimo was my go to shack 90% of the time. Only drawback was the height and depth. I lost a lot of fish to the top and front of that shack. I use longer rods. But the width was worth it. The windows were to short and there was absolutely no way to take a poop in that shack if you had to. Yes, nature calls sometimes. The new wide one is now my favorite shack. My daughter got one and I liked it so much I got one. The width is the same as the cottage and 15 pounds lighter. The cottage needs the poles installed or it is very saggy and flappy in the wind. I rarely use it. Last week in the new wide one it was 10 below and I had a jig hole, a dead stick hole with a jt panfish snare and a tip down in there. I banged out two walleye(one 26") two pike, and a few perch and only had one tangle. I did lose four walleye on the panfish snare, and battled a 40" plus pike or musky for 14 minutes before it broke me off. Two pound test on an ultra light pole. I never had a chance but it was fun. I put my little buddy heater in the tub behind me. Can keep my engel 13 quart cooler for my catch in the tub next to the seat and my 7.5 quart cooler with minnows next to it. I never use the front door. I love the pocket placement and new windows with zippers. The heater never goes above low and often pilot is enough to keep it warm. The cottage tub is useless and that skirt freezes into the ice, mine is all torn up. For my height the windows suck and I actually use the vent holes as windows. I bought the lodge about four years ago and have maybe used it six times. Even with a wheeler moving it into place is a chore. Thing is heavy. Hence the voyager. I take up to seven people with me to fish and the ladies get the premium shacks. The outbreak 850 is base camp and used for winter camping on the ice. I hate the frabil so much it is the toilet at base camp....lol.

Ice runner one man only weighs 38 pounds and I think they are 350. And you have 30 inch by 50 inch of room for drilling and gear. And a full sled.

Well done video.... however I don't really think this is a fair comparison... you are comparing a Clam top of the line product vs Otters entry level product... believe me Otter will ALWAYS out perform all other brands if you buy an Otter Pro... they are the best shacks on the market hands down.

This is Otter's only one-man shack, and therefore, the best one they currently have. I agree. I wish they'd come out with a new and improved one, but until then, this is the competition they are up against for someone wanting the premium one-man from each brand

I fish with others all the time. We all use one mans. Search out a bite then meet up. Once you fish in a one man you rarely want that person next to you.

For a company that has the best quality materials, Clam, their designers SUCK. Put the door on the front so you have to step over your holes/junk everytime, not too mention when you catch a fish.... Then make a ceiling you can hang a chandelier from. What the heck, I'd rather have the FISHING area! And then make it as heavy as a 2 or 3 man shelter, brilliant! Sometimes you wonder if companies actually use their products.
