When I was getting out of credit card debt, my local credit union was offering a 0% balance transfer, that really helped speed up my getting out of debt process.

Be careful making purchases on a card you are using for a balance transfer. I was charged interest on my purchases because the bank applied my payments to the 0% balance first.

Quite the contrary from Wells Fargo. This is what they say...Generally, we will apply your minimum payment first to lower APR balances (such as Purchases) before balances with higher APRs (such as Cash Advances). Payments made in excess of the minimum payment will generally be applied to balances with higher APRs first before balances with lower ones.

This is a hard lesson for many of us. I have called the bank before and asked if the payments can be applied to new purchases instead. Many will say yes. Even if the minimum payment is applied to the 0% balance extra payments usually will go to new charges from the statement period. So if you have a balance transfer balance and you decide to use the same card for a purchase of $50 you can make an EXTRA payment after you paid the minimum. But wait until the statement closes because you wont be able to pay for a new purchase untill it has been reported on you’re statement at the end of month.

Fyi, the Union Bank link is still active, but they no longer honor that offer. I went into a branch today and showed them the link, and they processed an application and brought me the paperwork for a different card with a shorter promotional term and a balance transfer fee. When I pointed out to them that the terms were different, they said the other card is no longer available. So be careful going into a bank to apply for a credit card. Since they are doing all of the work, they can easily process an application for a different card, and you won't know until they bring the paperwork out for you to sign.

The worse thing about balance transfers is sort of stealth and most people do not notice. So you get a new card, would you like a transfer, great, send us the account numbers and address and we will mail the check to the other bank today. So far, so good, but, big butt coming here, a week to 10 days later it post to the other card. The daily interest started the day the check was printed, and you just paid daily interest for 7 to 10 days on both cards at the same time. So you paid 2 companies for the same money. Happens every day and nobody ever notices. They can do better, but they want, after all, when you bill pay with your checking account, most credit card payments post in 1 to 2 business days, but not going to happen with a balance transfer in most cases.
