I think the dad sees them as kids in the present to show that, in his mind, these will always be his babies. And I don’t believe he was ever abusive to the mom, he was just trying to protect the kids from what she became. The last scene in episode 6 is especially heartbreaking because Nellie is clearly shown to have called her siblings before her death and none of them answered her. She was struggling for so long and with so much and they were all too busy with their own lives to really hear her.

I cry every time when Nell says that she was there screaming and no one could see her, because that happened to her entire life. She wanted some help for so long and everyone, except Arthur, didn't "see" her.

One of the moments in the show that hits me right in the heart. It’s so sad because that’s such a frightening and lonely thing to feel, especially for a little child, and then doubly so because it reflects adult Nellie, and how nobody could really see her or see that she was in trouble, and it ended in her death. So heartbreaking, but so good 😭

The dad shot with him seeing his kids as children was beautiful because as their dad, he just sees them as his kids whatever age they are. I was also guessing that Nellie was the Bent Neck Lady, I was thinking it was either her or the mom. The house basically gave Nellie everything she wanted, her family to believe her, to say she was right, her husband, the necklace she wanted to get when she was a kid. I think your theory about the ghosts preying on them when theyre mentally unwell could be quite solid, Luke I suppose got addicted because he wanted to escape them. As for the ending of episode 6, it just hits really hard how Nellie always just wanted her family's warmth and even at her funeral they took the oppurtunity to fight about their own issues instead of focusing on her. It's just so sad. Whether alive or dead, "I was right here and nobody could see me."

Always love to see your reaction! It's great that these episodes got paired because I feel they work pretty well together. The emotions and feelings in these two are beautifully brought to life, especially by Victoria Pedretti. Her great sensitivity makes her so convincing. The scene of her 'imagined' wedding at the house still brings me to tears because of how tragic it is. The house makes her see everything she wanted: Luke being healthy, Theo saying sorry,... This is then countered by the storm in the next episode where in both time-periods, no one could 'see' her. That profound loneliness is what gets me every time. This show is so amazing! I love it! And congrats on calling her being the bent-neck lady herself! Well spotted!

And here you can see another gift from one of the siblings. All of them have nothing to do with the house. Theo sees things when she touches something, Nell and her brother have the twin thing and Nell also has the gift that she doesn't know about, that she can see her own death. Here the spirit world merges with the purely psychological. Nell thinks she sees a ghost, but in reality she has a vision of her death all her life. And because the twin thing is also part of her gift, she can also see Luke's death. The house fulfills desires that are in the psyche of its victims. That's why the house, in the form of her family, tells her all the things she had wanted to hear from her family all along. Think about it, Nell was never believed when she said something. She had to fight for it all her life and was still not taken seriously. Theo only believed her because she had proof for herself through her ability that Nell did not written on the wall. Otherwise, she was never taken seriously and everything was talked down or alternative options were offered. In principle, she has been gaslighted all her life. Here it also becomes clear that the ghosts are not inevitably evil. Nell always intervenes when her family argues. Here her coffin falls over and the family stops arguing and works together again, even if only briefly. She tries to make herself known all the time, but as in Nell's lifetime also as a ghost "none of you can see me"

You’re not the only one who cried during this series. I did several times. I was blown away by the bent neck lady reveal and totally worn out by all the family drama in 2 storms. The family drama feels so real and relatable and it’s beautifully acted. The long shots in 2 Storms are amazing!! The scene where the dad sees the kids and the camera wraps back around and they’re adults is so good. They literally had to run out of frame and all the adults had to step in while the camera moved around. The timing, the blocking, the camera work is fantastic. Loved this series and can’t wait to see you finish it. Great reaction!

I think I cried during this series because I can relate to alot of the family problems. They always say the past can haunt you if you don't confront it, and thats exactly what is happening from a mental and spiritual level for each of our characters. In Nellie's case, her ghost is one of her sensitivities, one of her gifts, unfortunately where she can seemingly see her own death. The sad part about her death is that it was caused in the long term by not being seen by her own family and not being able to deal with the traumas of hill house. 💔 The scream at the end is the most heartbreaking, when she finally realizes that she is being haunted by the ghost of herself. I also have a theory that the moments when the bent neck lady appears in Nellie's life are actually turning points that are leading to her death. Little moments of trauma that led her to her fate. I cried in episode 5 because poor Nellie was only ever seen by 1 person in her life and that person was taken from her, and ultimately she succumbed to her unconfronted trauma.

The technical reason why most of us cry at the end of episode six: The long takes, whether you notice them consciously or not, are brutal. We’re used to a cut every 2-4 seconds, so when it’s been 10-15 minutes of the family in the past being terrorized or the family in the present grieving and fighting, it’s hard! It’s hard to breathe or blink or relax, so we get all wound up. The personal reason why most of us cry at the end of episode six: Who hasn’t really needed to be seen at some point? Who hasn’t had at least moments of depression or despair and felt like no one could see them? Who hasn’t felt like they were waving their arms and screaming for help only to have no one come?

These episodes absolutely shattered my heart. Personally the most devastating thing was how Nellie, even after death, continued suffering. Her story is just too heartbreaking. Being lured into the house to see fake visions of her loved ones finally be united like she always dreamed of, the pain and relief she felt when she saw Andrew's ghost... it all shows you how much despair she felt. She dies apparently at the hands of her own mother and then to she's able to see her family after death, only to witness how they are not united, but in fact are fighting and falling apart, and they still can't see her... She's still in pain and lonely even after death and that's just so fckng depressing man, she's not resting, she's still tormented and she is literally still a ghost to her family.

Girl I cried too. Nellie saying she was there the whole time, screaming, but no one could hear her. That just broke me because Nellie's ghost and spirit has been there and screaming for the whole family and they all have viewed it as something to be afraid of. And even Nellie was when she was younger. But really the bent-neck lady and Nellie's spirit are just terrified, and she's all alone after her death. That just BROKE ME!! So hard to put into words but that feeling is so visceral.

  • @josephcarriker3967

Definitely cried during this episode as well. It's lots of things: how awful each of the characters were but knowing they were navigating their pain and grief while doing so, the distance between the dad and the kids (and him seeing them as children, knowing that that's how they looked the last time he saw them all together), and yeah, Nellie's separation from her siblings: as a baby lost in the house, as a young woman struggling with mental illness creating distance between her and everyone else, and then as a ghost, standing in the middle of her siblings, utterly unseen by them. Absolutely heart-breaking. And I think that Luke did see the ghosts and other supernatural phenomena all the time. I'm pretty sure it's why he got high all the time - to blank it out. It's why it was only when he got sober that they started appearing to him again, and the reason why he was so panicked - his only coping mechanism for dealing with them was the drugs, and he was trying not to go back to them.

The bent-neck lady being Nell. She was haunted by her death her whole life. And if you look at it as mental illness and suicidal thoughts, she has had the thoughts from a very young age, they have haunted her like a ghost. And as she does it she thinks back to the times the suicidal thoughts manifested themselves, in agony screaming over how it all came true in the end and she couldn't do anything about it. It is sooooo fking tragic, I cry every time.

It's worth watching the behind the scenes videos of 'Two Storms' to see how they managed all of the long takes with no cuts. The entire episode is so carefully crafted. And yes, I absolutely bawled my eyes out watching these episodes. You can definitely view the supernatural in this show as a metaphor for mental health issues, so seeing Nell dying so young and then having to haunt her broken family hits hard.

  • @CraigKostelecky
    @CraigKostelecky8 ай бұрын

10:08 The "get well" expression isn't just another way of saying getting high. The thing about drugs is you do get that high in the beginning, but once you keep going down that hole, you never really feel high anymore, and not using gives you great pain (until you've properly detoxed). So using drugs takes away that pain for a short time. When you're not using, you feel sick, so getting well is stopping the sick feeling. Detoxing off of drugs or alcohol can be extremely painful, and rehab is a scary idea to an addict. So sometimes, the best way to get an addict into rehab is to help get them that one last high. Then their detox can be managed by professionals, and once they have been cleaned out, the addict is able to make a choice again about whether to use or not.

These two marking the midpoint of the season really hit hard as far as what this show was about for me. It's not a horror show, it's a really strong and multi-layered family drama that happens to use horror as a tool to convey its themes. The long unbroken shots in Two Storms make it into more of a series of vignettes, like stage plays, with some amazing camera work and cowboy switches thrown in for good measure. And once we know the secret of the Bent-Neck Lady, her presence just makes me cry. :(

I’d say that Theo isn’t selfish, she is guarded, because she has to be with her ‘gift’. She literally puts all of her energy into her job, & is willing to put herself through horrible assaults via her abilities to help children because no one could help them when they were children. Remember, her siblings really don’t have a framework to understand what her career takes out of her. As for their own family & personal relationships, they are all dealing with their own trauma in unhealthy ways. She reaches out as best she can to those she sees she can help (keeping Shirley from being a cold workaholic, being willing to go out to California to help Nelly grieve in a healthy way), but even as a tween she had a pretty clear view of where she stood in the family: middle child, Queer, & with an uncomfortable & scary ability that made others uncomfortable. So she put up walls to protect herself. Which she kept up as an adult because (in the words of my therapist), ‘we can only do the best we can with the coping skills we have.’ You might think that as a therapist she would have a better toolbox from which to work, but as many therapists can attest, giving too much to your job can wear you too thin, thus keeping you from treating yourself with the same quality of care that you are able to provide to others. AAAAND can you tell which character I relate to the most.

Also i love that U called nell being the bent neck lady this whole time. Its rare. Most are genuinely shocked and staring with open mouths at this final reveal. Its devastating. Seeing her relive every moment she ever saw the bent neck lady, and watching the horror on her face as she realizes she was seeing her death state this whole time (another example of this families psychic/ sensitive abilities, which is sad bc on some level they know their sensitives and yet they dont realize what all os happening to them is a cause and effect of those abilities. Like the mom, her sensitive abilities are what ended up driving her to the brink of insanity in the end. ) its heartbreaking too bc this whole time u think shew being haunted by a ghost or something paranormal, but so does nell. And all her problems that followed her into adult hood and to her tragic death stemmed from fully believing she was being haunted when in fact it was just her premonition of thr future which then in turn causes it to become real, it was like a you csnt escape this fate, full circle moment. And the her not understanding what it truly was is the most tragic, and masterful piece of tv writing ive ever seen

Poor, sweet Nell, who just wanted everyone to be okay and for her family to listen to her and believe her, and the house tricks her into thinking she finally got everything she wanted before letting the illusion fade and killing her. When the mother is wearing a red robe or red its not her. Its the house, i think the house itself is alive. Several hints leads to that, like how olivia is saying a house is not just a house, it needs to breathe and all of that. The red room i belive is the houses stomach.

Same here. As a child and into my teens. I don't think it's happened since I was 20 or so (I'm 36 now), but I vividly remember the unsettling sensation of the paralysis itself and the night terrors that frequently accompanied it. I don't wish it on anyone.

"Heartful horror" is the term that I want to use for HHH. Even though horror is generally supposed to be mean-spirited (yes it is, shut up ye faint-hearted critics), it's a great thing to see the opposite and see it work.

Very thoughtful, perspective reaction. Look forward to your thoughts on Two Storms. Personally, I find these two episodes (and the whole show) to be very emotional because the whole family has been traumatized by what had happened at Hill House, each in their own way, and it is painful to empathize with them.

Different point of view here. I think episode 5 could also be interpreted as Nell’s life flashing before her eyes as she was dying, thinking about all the happy moments of her life and its ultimate tragedy and she saw all that (episode 5) in her last seconds of life.

Remember on Luke's chapter when he got jumped and you said "all of that for a pair shoes" or something like that? In the scene where he's manipulating Nell he says that he owes that guy a lot of money. Also I meant to comment this next rant on your first video but I never did. About Shirley making Luke leave Nell's wedding. You were actually quite nice to Shirley because I've seen so many reactors being very upset and not being quite understanding of her side of things. Like, people dont see to understand the weight of Luke being high when he went there. People always say something like "oh but he wanted to be there for her" and dont understand that he wouldnt be there for her. An addict relapsing is a big deal for the people close to them, this would absolutely ruin the wedding. With how caring and close Nell is to Luke, it would have probably literally stopped the party. And people act like Shirley was a bad sister for not allowing it to happen, when for me she would have been a terrible sister if she did let him go inside - not only a bad sister to Nell for allowing her one big day to be ruined, but also to Luke because that would have been something huge for his "things I did when I was high and regretted" list. People are way too hard on Shirley, she's always the least liked sibling beside Steven. I think ita unfair when she always has to take the hard decisions that no one wants to make so they leave her to deal with it.

The original novel by Shirley Jackson is not the same as this movie. They took the character names from the original book (there is also an original film) and used them for the kids. In the book Nell is a grown woman with psychic abilities and she's doing a ghost investigation with the other characters. Part way thru the story they see 'Come Home Nell' written on the walls and they accuse her but she didn't do it. Anyway I believe this is where that theme came from.

It is creepy. The house is literally making her see what it wants her to see. One of the cool parts too is they made the adult version of nell sound "child-like" to drive home the fact that shes seeing all her siblings as children so it would stand to reason she would be child age (of course shes not bc reality is shes an adult. ) * but it makes her seem like shes in a trance. And at the end right before she sees herself standing on the edge of the staircase up to that point listen to nell's voice when she interacts with the mom. Again her voice sounds like a childs innocent voice (wonderful acting by Victoria in those scenes btw!) But then after the necklace is put around nell's neck (really the rope) she has this moment where she is staring off into space but then she gets a confused look on her face, touches her neck where the "necklace " would lie , its almost as if adult nell is in a sense "snapping out of it" the trance like state the house has put her in by showing her all the stuff we previously saw. So then when she looks up and sees olivia, her voice once again sounds like adult nell. Its subtle but its there. She sounds like adult nell and she goes "mom?" You can hear the question in her voice. She sounds genuinely surprised to see olivia there (& not just bc the obvious that her moms dead!) But like she doesnt remember seeing and interacting wiith her mothers ghost this whole time we've seen. I really hope you can see that next time you watch this! Its hard to catch on a first watch but ive watched it dozens of times since, and you really start to pick up on stuff. The actress did such an amazing job of that, even tho we saw adult nell, her diction and delivery of those scenes prior to her final moment on the stairs, made her sound like the kid version of herself. Really drives home the whole delivery of this entire scene from the moment she steps back into Hill House.

Another thing ppl tend to be confused about is why liv keeps " disappearing" and then reappears in a place she couldnt possibly be, bc it simply isnt physically possible for her to of ended up there. And you see it later of course but it ia showing that time isnt linear. Its liv's spirit walking around in one shot, and then actually alive olivia that pops up in another spot. Its weird and confusing at first but later its made clear although sometimes by that time you wouldn't think of this tiny scene of Hugh trying to find olivia, seeing her but she doesnt answer him and just walks away, he is really following after her spirit that is walking the halls of the house, WAY later in time, long after she dies, and yet hes seeing it before liv is actually even dead. Its trippy and yet a cool way to first show this and it ties in in the very last ep.

If you didn't catch it, the reason that Nell flushed her meds was because she thought that her necessary medication was causing Luke's addiction to drugs because of the twin connection so she was trying to break his dependency to drugs by not taking her meds either. Although that might be why she got worse while he got better.

Nell wasn’t haunting herself and there is nothing to do with time travel. She had just died and her life is flashing before her eyes. The vent neck lady sees some of the most significant and impactful times in her life. Bell sees the bent neck lady sporadically throughout her life. For the bent neck lady it all happens immediately.

I’d always though that there was a “time travel” for the lack of better words, aspect to it mostly bc of the monologue Nell has at the end about time being like confetti and it not moving in a linear way.

I think Theo like a person who "absorbs" other peoples ghosts by topuching they (just like a Dr. she is, a psichiatrician, right?), and then she has alllll those experiences: but without lived they. And this is somehow overhelming, thats why she isolates herself from everybody, using gloves, building brick walls around herself... Its like if someone tell me "dont play soccer, cos you will get hurt. I played once and got my arm broken" and then I dont play soccer ever, to not get hurt (but I know the pain, somehow), and this keep going, like "dont fall in love, you will be hurt... dont eat raw carrots... dont visit Detroit...".. well, at least the last one I agree. But you see, she is not living, she is hidding, and she hiddes not from her own ghosts or traumas, but somebodys elses ghosts and traumas... Nell is more open to live and others peoples, but that also... tooooo naive, maybe, in her case, cos she can get hurt a lot, she puts herself in a frail position, and even start to get ignored by everybody else, to the point she gets angry with her brothers and sisters and start to face and fight they. At least is how I see it.

Two incredibly defining episodes for me, especially as a reimagining of my favorite book. The only sticking point for me has been with Arthur, it is extremely inappropriate and unprofessional for a medical professional to pursue a romantic relationship with a patient. It has always had me disliking him from the start.
