I’m an understudy for an amp builder - his current project ready to hit the market is a 2U 3-way Passive Monitor Controller with variable step switches and the best components we can find. It’s turning out lovely and we’re looking forward to it hitting the market. Multiple speaker setups are necessary if you really want to hear what’s going on. A great and easy way to reference your mix without moving. Great vid as always fluff

You know, this makes me want to revisit the idea of building out a car stereo rig for my home studio, so that I can have an easier time referencing instead of bouncing the mix and going back and forth to my truck. Anyone else done something similar?

The Neumanns are certainly making the rounds on the KZread channels right now - I watched the Dr. Mix video on them last night. I bet they sound killer. The Neumann KH 80 speakers feature a 4 inch woofer and sell for a thousand dollars a pair, so they're out of my tax bracket, but for people who mix for a living, that's not an issue. The KH 120s look good, though.

Did you think about Dual sub sistem? (stereo sub) Below each monitors you put 1 sub so you have complete stereo power. Its the world change situation in sound when you have dual sub below the monitors instead 1 sub on the floor..

so... I have a shit listening situation and not much choices because im in an apartment. I was thinking about just buying another pair of closed back headphones and a pair of open back headphones. I have the audio technica m50x that I like a lot and have been using for a while. But maybe listening on multiple headphones could help up my game. just a thought.

Mackie 824 mk1’s for 20 years. I know em like the back of my hand. I’ve got some Kali IN8’s (with matching sub), a single mix cube, an utterly crap £5 quid speaker from the supermarket and several pair of studio and consumer cans. I have the odd reference on everything but 95 percent of all my work is done on the Mackies. My advice to anyone up and coming: get the best monitors you can afford and make as much music as you possibly can. You’ll get to know em eventually! And fluff is totally correct: find a terrible speaker to have the odd flick to!

All my friends always ask me why I don’t get bigger monitors. I tell them that they’re not needed especially when I’m in 15x10 room. I also will be doing all my final tests in my car and on headphones and other Bluetooth devices. Therefore I see no need to upgrade when I use everything around me to do the checking. I feel a lot of people fall short at this. Laziness will get you nowhere.

Hm... seems like you forgot another obvious benefit of having several _independent_ monitors. I have a four pair monitor setup, all identical, and I use them for signal separation and depth setting in the audio field. Being able to pull up specific signals on their own speakers and not having them share speakers with the rest of the mix helps a lot for me. Also, being able to seperate out different depth zones of the mix on dedicated speakers. I wouldn't go back to a single pair process anymore.

Now if you REALLY wanna get into audiophile territory, you'll hire a good electrician and get some big boi power conditioners to eliminate that pesky 116V readout. Make sure your computer is on a separate dedicated circuit.

I'm of the opinion that expensive monitors are like boats. You've got an ungodly priced speed boat, but all you've got is a creek to play in? Should have bought a canoe. I hear remix after remix of legendary songs and albums that are always getting updated in the newest up to date mixing and mastering facilities which is fine I guess if you need a new reason to convince a customer to buy that album for the 8th time. At the end of the day the song is the same. All the hardware upgrades didn't make the song better. Most monitors will get a person that knows how to use them to that level of polished quality allowing for the song to be heard for what it should be, getting beyond that place of a noticeable "it could be better." I've never heard a mix that sounded like it was mixed on NS10's or the lowly KRK Rokit, to the same level that I've never heard a mix that sounded like it was mixed on Neumann's.

Surely if you want to know if a mix sounds good you could just buy a cheap shit hifi with usb input for mp3 etc - if a mix sounds good on that it’s going to sound good on anything? Or we can just not be lazy and go the car 🤣
