@@Hikingguy I’ve only hiked in California.. I guess one way to approach is- doing the least challenging and working your way up? Or smallest to tallest? That second hard part of the challenge - finding the tallest peak that’s still hike-able. You’d find me doing a ton of homework to get those answers… Aside from all of that, best of luck to you on your challenge!!

Mt. Rogers in VA and you have Whitetop Mt. across from it that is the 2nd highest. I've done both and Mt. Rogers is more challenging and longer but amazing views and wild ponies near the summit as well.

You didn't mention a timeline for the challenge. If you are giving yourself a fairly short window, then weather is a real planning consideration (for example, whatever is the highest climbable in AK - somewhere in the Wrangells? - you are going to want to do it in July, August or early September, I assume, and similarly, places like Humphreys Peak and Wheeler Peak in the Fall). Also, it makes sense to group them geoprahpically to reduce travel costs and time - for example, do all six New England states at once. Are you going to give yourself credit for ones you have already done - Mt Whitney being the obvious example? Be safe, have fun, and thanks for taking us along on your adventure!

Go for Wheeler Peak in Nevada, there’s the undervisited Great Basin National park there too - so it should be pretty approachable. I’ve been looking to hike it this summer or fall.

Hey! I'm an Idaho resident and a bit of a trail/geography/mapping obsessive, so I wanted to give you some insight and probably save you some time for finding the highest trailed peak in Idaho. Most trails to peaks in the state are going to be to old fire lookouts. The highest of these is Twin Peaks Lookout at 10394 ft, which has a rough road to the top but no trail. The second highest is Taylor Mountain at 9960. There used to be a trail to the top of this one but it's no longer maintained. Reportedly, it's pretty sketchy. I wouldn't really count it as class 1. Going down the list of fire lookouts, your best bet is probably Lookout Mountain, elevation 9954 ft (NOT to be confused with lookout mountain near Coolin, ID). From what I've heard this hike has pretty spectacular views of the Sawtooth range across the valley. There is not a lot of information on the hike, though from what I can gather the trail is maintained. This isn't a perfect option, and it's a tough hike. You're looking at about 18 miles round trip with 5,000ft of climbing. But as far as an *officially* named peak goes, this is the highest you'll be able to get on a trail. So what else is there? Well, there are a few options, depending on your criteria. I'm assuming you want something that's on a trail. If you are ok with climbing a road, Big Windy Peak in the Lemhi Range (10,400ft) is as high as you can get. What about pure trail? I've found one other obscure option: Annie's Peak. Also in the Lemhi Range, this unofficially named peak caps out at 10,288ft. If you're looking for a peak reachable via trail, this is (almost 100% surely) the highest you're going to get. There's little to no information online, but the trail is clearly visible on last year's satellite imagery and the trailhead you start at is pretty popular, at least for the Lemhi Range. So provided you have a car that can get to the trailhead, you should be able to pull it off. The Lemhi Range is very beautiful but also very quiet. You don't really see many people there. Lastly, I'll cover some info about higher peaks and higher trails. There are 9 peaks in Idaho above 12,000 ft. All but one are class 3+ to the summit. Hyndman peak is class 2, but it's still absolutely not a trail. There ARE some higher trails than the peaks I mentioned, but these trails go to passes and basins, not a mountaintop. The highest I know of is Standhope Pass in the Pioneer mountains, which just barely squeaks over 11,000 ft (if you can't find it, it's at the end of Broad Canyon. I've hiked this one myself, very beautiful trail!). There are very few other trails even remotely that high. In fact, I don't know of another trail in Idaho above 10,200 ft. The best I know of is the end of the Boulder Chain Lakes Trail which reaches about 10,150. There are maybe a dozen high mountain passes scattered through central Idaho above 9,500ft, along with a few fire lookouts. Most of our peaks above 10,000ft are too rugged for a trail. I hope this is helpful! TL;DR Annie's Peak in the Lemhi Range at 10,288 ft is the highest mountaintop you can reach on a currently maintained trail in the state of Idaho. Lookout Mountain at 9954 ft is the highest officially named mountaintop you can reach on a trail.

Mt Washington (6288’) is the highest hike-able point summit in New Hampshire. Many ways up/down: Tuckerman Ravine Trail is one of the most challenging. Ammonosuc Ravine Trail up and Jewell down is a popular loop. Food (and tourists) at the top. Get your classic picture at the peak sign. If you get tired you can take the Cog Railway down or hitch a ride down the auto road. Be sure to plan to return to the same side of the mountain you started at (lots of trails at the peak, easy to go down a different side of the mountain). Web sites available to check summit weather and trail conditions. Looking forward to this series!

Thank you so much, really appreciate everything! And for a humid hike, I just start at sunrise and make sure I hydrate more than usual. I also bring one of those old school terrycloth headbands in case the sweat gets out of hand.

This is going to be really fun to watch. I am thinking that there are some great peaks to start with, like Katahdin or Humphreys peak, Guadalupe Peak or Elbert. But I am more interested with the one that you are going to end with. And I currently have two candidates. Number one is Mount Whitney, it is going to be the highest point of this series, since everything above 14000ft in Alaska has to be technical and everything in other states is lower than Whitney. Another potential grand finale is Mauna Kea, it's just cool and other-worldly

I'm considering doing this challenge myself, so I've done my best to compile a list of the highest summits I could find in the mountain west. Some of these took quite a while to find! I'm confident most of these are the "best" options available, with the exceptions of Montana and Alaska. Regardless of if they are, I'm hoping this can serve as a baseline for anybody else who wants to do more research. Oregon - South Sister, 10,358 ft. No-snow season is very short, trail can be spotty. Runner up: Eagle Cap, 9,577 ft Washington - Tiffany Mountain, 8,250 ft. Windy Peak, 8333 ft, has a trail and is higher. But it's currently closed from fires. Wyoming - Medicine Bow Peak, 12,016 ft. Don't be fooled by "trails" to higher peaks like Cloud peak, they are boulder fields. This is the highest real trail. Highest non-peak trail is Indian Pass, Wind River Range, 12,127 ft. The journey to Indian Pass is probably one of the most beautiful treks in the US. Montana - Monument Mountain, 10,051 ft. There are lots of "trails" in Montana that are just scrambles. This is the highest real summit I found, but there might be a higher one. There is a higher pass in the Beartooths called Sundance pass -- Just about 11,000 ft. Also very beautiful. Nevada - Wheeler Peak (Rocky trail but an official trail nonetheless. In an underappreciated national park too) Alaska is tricky. The answer is probably South Pioneer Peak (6,300 ft), but whether it's good enough to count as a trail is debatable. More research is probably needed on this one. Finally, here are a few obvious ones you probably know already. These are all also state highpoints with good trails to the top: California - Mount Whitney, 14,505 ft Utah - King's Peak, 13,528 ft (debatable, the end is rocky) Colorado - Mount Elbert, 14,439 ft South Dakota - Black Elk Peak, 7,244 ft Texas - Guadalupe Peak, 8,718 ft Arizona - Humphreys Peak, 12,633 ft New Mexico - Wheeler Peak 13,167 ft (Again! Different peak, same name. Not an official trail but very clear and well traveled)

Lovely. I just spent 4 days in West Virginia shooting from dusk to dawn. It was 90-95F and humid but it was also surprisingly refreshing. I suspect hiking there is healthier than at home in Californian dry heat.

@@Hikingguy I can second Black Mesa. About a 9 mile round trip hike from trail head. At mile 3 starts a 1000 ft climb up the mesa. Once on top it’s about another mile to the marker. Flattop mesas are a unique hiking experience. Too hot in July & August. No water sources. (Don’t forget to drive north up the road 5 miles from Black Mesa trail head to the OK-NM-CO tripoint - another neat, unique marker called Preston Monument.) Might be possible to pair with two other high points in same trip, Wheeler Peak, NM (class 1) or Mount Sunflower, KS.

Looked ahead on the transcript since i enjoy knowing where you are as you hike! (I know not everyone does.) I think it's great you are doing this with Class I hikes. I have seen others do highest peak climbs, but some areas require crazy rock scrambling that many of us will not do. What a neat idea.

Mt. Elbert in Colorado is the high point and is class 1.

I’ve been in Orange County since the mid 90’s but grew up in Maryland and do not miss that humidity at all 😂 I’ll be heading back to Maryland and Virginia for 2 weeks in September and trying to schedule in a hike or two. Love the frameless backpack that would fold down and pack in my carry on bag. Looking forward to a review of that!

When you get to Illinois, I hope it's the Shawnee National Forest you come to. Williams Hill Peak is 1,066 ft, and it's said to be one of the highest points in Illinois. At least the 2nd or 3rd. I know the area very well. Have a few videos of it. :) I'd love to join you hiking it if you do. That would be an awesome collab. Southern Illinois is my thing! Great video and a great challenge!

@hiking guy If you do Mt Elbert in Colorado. I recommend the Black Cloud Trail, which is shorter and steeper but I saw only 10 other people on the trail last July. It is way less crowded than the standard route and you get stunning views on the ridgeline.

Love Wheeler, I did it years ago (like Mitchell), excited to revisit some of these hikes since I started the website...

Every approach to Baxter peak on Katahdin has some scrambling. Nothing major, but even a single class 2 spot disqualifies a trail if I understand the rules correctly. So, for Maine you may have to climb Sugarloaf mountain via ski trails and resort service roads. Is this allowed in your challenge?

@@Hikingguy so cool! I discovered hiking recently and live in CA, so I look forward to hiking the highest point in the state I grew up in!

I've done most of the peaks over 10K feet that have normal trails and a few under 10K too.... mostly in the western states.... except I got Georgia's HP on a trip to visit my dad several years ago. I'd like to do Katahdin in Maine, but otherwise I don't care that much about the ones that are lower than my house. I live at 6840 feet in the Sierra Nevada range.

I did this one six days ago. From the Black Mountain Campground trailhead to the summit and back down. 12.55 miles and 3711' gain. What did you think of the trail? How does it compare to other trails you've hiked?

Glad you got to check it out, I enjoyed it. Wasn't too bad compared to some of the bigger climbs on the west coast but tougher with the humidity.

What are you doing for fluid management? I find I suck down water when it gets warm / humid/ hot so my 3L water bladder will last me 3 - 4 miles and I limit myself to that. That's fine for me for summer because my favorite time of year is hiking in the fall (New England).

I usually burn through 1L every 4-5 miles when it's hot out. On this hike I refilled at the summit and cameled up at the summit
