The Beeching Report: 60 Years on | Great Central Railway - Railways at Work 2023 - 19-20/08/23

The Railways at Work weekend at the Great Central Railway brings focus to the various jobs and people of the railways from years past, with this year's event taking the opportunity to bring focus to Dr Beeching and his infamous report, 'The Reshaping of British Railways'. The report recommended the closure of 5,000 miles of Britain's railway network, including the Great Central Railway. The report led to protests against the closure of lines and the loss of jobs, with these scenes re-enacted at Loughborough Central station over the course of the event. 1963 saw the closure of stations along the route including Quorn & Woodhouse, Rothley and Belgrave & Birstall, as a result of the Beeching cuts.
Other historical re-enactments included the loading and unloading demonstrations of freight trains at Quorn & Woodhouse, recreating sights typical of goods yards in the 1960s. The event also featured BR(W) Modified Hall Class 6990 'Witherslack Hall' running in the guise of scrapped sister loco 6988 'Swithland Hall', with the locomotive having recently completed a major boiler overhaul, and BR Class 24 D5054 'Phil Southern' making for a welcome addition to the event, visiting from the East Lancashire Railway.

This is fantastic! Fantastic camerawork as well. They (GCR) really did a fantastic job with this - we just need something similar now at the Severn Valley!

I was fortunate last year to travel on GCR on a weekday Steam Gala Day. It was just as terrific as this video's recreation. Great filming and excellent actors. So realistic! Well done to all.

Great stuff. We still suffer as a country from the vandalism done by Beeching on behalf of the corrupt Minister of Transport Ernest Marples of Marples Ridgway (road builder). The money wasted on HS2 would have been better reinstating some of the branch lines and communities destroyed by this [Marples] corruption.

In reality Beeching cuts where not all his, the then head of the Tory transport minister owned a road building company whose interest was not on the countries transport links but on his own bank account. In Parliament when he was accused of having a interest clash he sold his shares in the company to His wife Shortly after he received a tax bill for £63,000 a huge sum then so he did what every thieving Tory minister did, he drove to Monaco which dosent have a treaty with British police so he led a lavish lifestyle until he diminished his tax bill to a fraction of what it was

Ernest Marples has very little to do with it. Little halts in the middle of nowhere serving half a dozen people a day, but still need staff, losing money hand over fist; of course it was right to close them down.

@@WilliamSmith-mx6ze and your information comes from where? It’s well known that Beeching was from iCI and knew little about the running of railways but when he submitted the plans to Marples office they then where put under pressure to carve even more holes in the railway network! That has came from those who worked in Marples office as he wasn’t a particularly well liked politician. So going by your no doubt expertise on railways France, Germany et Al are all wrong as they operate feeder services to their main hub stations. The sane ones you would close… tell me are you one of the idiots who vote for the Tory party despite them failing in just about every aspect of their Governance!! Because your simplistic but obviously wrong judgement in the long term judging by the numbers of areas wanting to have their local railways restored. But am sure given your viewpoint you would much prefer for more roads to be built
