The Beautiful South was an English pop group formed at the end of the 1980s by two former members of Hull group The Housemartins, Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway. Other members were Sean Welch (bass), Dave Stead (drums) and Dave Rotheray (guitar) and a succession of female vocalists - Briana Corrigan, Jacqui Abbott and Alison Wheeler.
The group broke up in January 2007, claiming the split was due to "musical similarities",having sold around 15,000,000 records worldwide. In January 2009, it was announced that the former members Dave Hemingway, Alison Wheeler, and Dave Stead would reform under the name "New Beautiful South" which was later changed to "The South".

Before this the only TBS track I had ever heard was 36D because it got a lot of air play. The audio-only track of this one here is stunning when played from a good service. Turn the up volume and damn the neighbors!

Jacqui abbott has an amazing voice and vocal range absolutely immense. 👏💖
Mama Cass gave us the definitive version of this great song but this is still excellent.

In 1995 after a screening of Ed Wood in central London I left the cinema and walked into blinding arc lights. Looking up I saw the marquee now read "FRENCH KISS featuring THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH". "Oh, wow, they're shooting a video!" I can't remember when I first heard their version of Dream a Little Dream but I immediately fell in love with it. (It wasn't a hit. I got it as a b-side of the 'Don't Marry Her single.) I must confess it was many, many years before I realised how close a copy of the Mama Cass version it is.
