    The mono 2009 sounds incredible, even to someone who doesn't much like mono. The reprisal's drums sound absurdly good when cranked. Massively powerful. Truly astonishing to hear. The drums throughout the whole album do but that song in particular.

    I've just done a visual and sound comparison between the mono 50th Ann and the mono 2009 Sgt Peppers CDs, using Lucy In The Sky, on Audition. The 50th is slightly compressed and 2dB less amplitude with respect to the 2009, so I added about 1.7dB of amplitude for listening comparisons. The 50th has somewhat more highs, about 2 dB above around 4kHz. Also it has a noticeably stronger bass output. Overall, the 2009 sounds somewhat mellow and not as clear, and definitely has less bass, than the 50th. The 50th is slightly compressed, missing about 3dB of dynamic range, but sounds more exciting due to the louder highs and louder bass. The 2009 looks much better on the screen, but the 50th sounds more exciting. Both are mastered way below 0dBFS, so neither are brick-walled. That's my quick assessment of differences.

    Not all of us enjoy the louder bass, in fact, it is what I detest about all of Giles Martin's remasters. I definitely prefer the 2009 mono version, and also the 1987 stereo remaster that Sir George Martin did.

    I bought the big Sgt Peppers box just to get the mono disc. Have the 09 box too, but this album is so fantastic in mono I had to have a second version just to compare. I agree with you. The 17 mastering is better. It's warmer and more in your face. Thank you for this beautiful video.

    Fascinating. The sole reason I bought the Mono set was for Sgt. Pepper. When I read the 50th Super was going to have the mono I just thought it would be the same. But now I know it's different I'll be giving an iTunes buy for the moment. Great discussion video. Thanks me love. Cheers from Tucson AZ.

    Can't help you with your questions unfortunatly. I can only confirm that I also read that the box version is a straight transfer, which I am happy about. Haven't compared the two cd's in a long while, but enjoy them Both. Another nice video.

    Fascinating. I had not realised that little tweaks had been added to the 2009 release, I had always believed they were a flat transfer. Are the other albums in that set the same? I have both sets so I will be able to have a listen Thanks

    Lenticular. The best mono version of the album I've heard is by taking the 2017 Stereo vinyl and switching my receiver from stereo to mono. I understand newer receivers don't have this feature, but it you can, try it. The 2017 stereo sounds fantastic in mono.

    FitToBe TieDyed wow I’m going to try this today. In a way that makes a lot of sense. Giles said he was trying to reconstruct the original mono mix of the album but for modern times.

    Brian, curious to know if the differences are due to playback on different players or was the same player used for both CDs?

  • @BrianBringelson

    @BrianBringelson

    Rich Channel-1 yes great question. I used two methods. The first I listened to both CDs in the same player and A/B’d them as quickly as I could. Then I ripped both CDs to my computer (in high quality AIFF files) which allowed me to A/B much easier. Both methods revealed the same results I spoke about in the video. Great question by the way and I wish I would have given this info in the video. Thanks!

    Wilky thanks for the kind words. That’s a hard question as there are so many different ways to approach starting a Beatles collection. If you wanted to go the mono route I would recommend the 2014 box set. It’s a bit hard to come by, but is the best bang for your buck. The stereo pressings are a whole different ball game. Check out some of my other videos and you can see what I recommend for those.

    Great video! Just one thing: Human ear cannot distinguish differences less than 1dB 😉

  • @BrianBringelson

    @BrianBringelson

    3 жыл бұрын

    Tyler D not sure what the exact science behind that is, but I know I can tell the difference between 1db + or - within a mix. Many times when I’m mixing my own music, we will lower something by a dB and you can certainly tell the difference. In addition I did throw the Pepper CD songs into Logic and could see the wave forms were indeed about a DB apart in volume. Not trying to say your wrong, just giving you my background info on it. Thanks for the comment.

  • @BrianBringelson

    Chris McGovern I’ve done a bit of that in the past, but I’m not sure I’ll be doing it for video purposes. Vinyl vs CD is always so drastic. But for example when the pepper box came out I did A/B the CD remix with the Vinyl remix and the vinyl had way less compression (which for me was much better).

    Chris McGovern haha thanks Chris. It’s something I’ve had to work on and it’s been a struggle most of my life. I used to have a terrible stutter when I was younger and didn’t want to even open my mouth in case someone made fun of it. Now that I’m on KZread occasionally dopes like to point out any little thing that will make them feel superior. I try not to let it bug me but sometimes I just have to respond.
