Hey Jude is an all-time classic. It was #1 on the pop charts for 9 weeks in 1968. Paul wrote it for John's son, Julian. John and his first wife, Cynthia, were getting a divorce and Paul wrote it to brighten up Julian's day with an uplifting message.

"Take a sad song and make it better" is pretty much my approach to life.

I grew up with the Beatles music & had most of their records. They were part of the British Invasion. You can't go wrong with any of their music. They had so many great songs in the 60's-70's. "Hey Jude" is a great song written by Paul McCartney to comfort Julian Lennon when his parents separated.

Can you imagine being lucky enough to be in that crowd singing along with the Beatles? That woman with the white top sitting or standing right next to Paul leaning against the piano singing along with him...wow!! That's something you take to your grave!!!!

At that time singles were never over 3-3:30 minutes long. Someone told John Lennon, radio stations won’t play a 7 minute single…to which he replied “they will if it’s us!” LOL.

I first saw the Beatles in the Cavern club, Liverpool in 1962, great memories for me and a wonderful time for U.K. music.

This performance was from 1968. The Beatles broke up in early 1970, so they didn't do anything together after 1970. Yes, The Beatles were funny, they loved to play around, hense, the beginning.The Beatles were amazing. Greatest band of ALL Time. Will love them forever.

What they were playing at the beginning was the theme song for David Frost's TV show (David is the one introducing them in case you don't know.)

I was in 7th Grade in 1968 when this was on the radio every hour for months. What a wonderful time.

I think you would both like Paul's solo work from the 70s. Truly a musical genius.

This was from The David Frost Show - September 1968. It was a huge selling single, number one for 9 weeks in America.

I love the Beatles. I remember exactly where I was when I heard John had been murdered. Later the same when George had passed away. Each time I was crushed. I miss them dearly. They gave so much to the world of music and we can never thank them enough.

So yeah, the Beatles *were* (are) telling you everything is going to be okay. It's why this song will still be a classic 100 years after this scene was filmed. They're an indelible part of my life, as they are hundreds of millions of others. That's pretty darn special when you think about it. I don't think anything quite like it will ever happen again.

5.20 is when Johns harmony kicks in. Paul looks up at him and smiles. The harmony is not obvious at all, it's underneath Paul then goes above. Genius beauty. That's the Beatles!

Paul smiles, because John FORGOT to COME IN with harmonies, the FIRST time around. You will see Paul look in John's direction (when it's a long shot with the camera, where you can see the whole group) and then look at John and you will see him look down at Paul and John raises his eyebrows (as if to say, "what's wrong?" then realizes he DIDN'T do the harmony, and slightly gives a shrug of his shoulders. It's really funny. So when it comes around for the harmony to kick in again, you see Paul glance over at John and couple of times and it looks like he might be thinking, "Ok, is John going to come in or not" Then Paul puts his head down to hide his chuckle when John finally does what he is supposed to do, this time. I LOVE it

Hard to believe this was 1968.. I was 3, have heard this song hundreds of times, it never gets old.

This was the late 1960's, performing on David Frost's TV show, with the band breaking up at the end of that decade. You rightly picked up on the diversity of the audience which was key with The Beatles. This is the group who when they were touring the US for the first time were horrified when they found at one venue the audience was to be segregated. Coming from Liverpool, a very diverse city in the UK they were not used to that and refused to perform unless the segregation was dropped, which (as it was the Beatles dictating terms) it was - a quite historic moment. And then on top of that the song was an absolute banger still played constantly today. Literally they are unsurpassed in so many ways for their influence towards changing music and society.

They were not performing on The David Frost Show. They were filming the promotional film, of which there were three, one of which was given to the Frost show to premiere, and Frost dropped by Twickenham - where it was filmed - to film a link to give the impression they were live on the show. The "audience" were made up of people they'd invited, members of the Twickenham Beatles Fan Club, and hired extras. The performance is live vocals on top of prerecorded studio backing track.

The elderly fellow with the flowers behind his ears makes my day every time. And I've seen it a hundred times or more in my nearly 50 years.

Yeah -- Paul says he was an alcoholic just hanging around, so Paul invited him in.

When my Granddaughter was 3 my son, her uncle, bought her a mp3. He didn't want her listening to inappropriate music so he put a lot of Beatles music on it. So we had a 3 yr old bopping around singing The Beatles loudly😂 She's 21 now and still loves them. And Led Zeppelin plus other greats.

The song/video is almost 55 years old!!! I just had an emotional reaction to it and I can't explain why precisely. Maybe it's knowing that this was one of the last times The Beatles were a band working collaboratively and seemingly having a good time together. Seeing them playing and all the people around them - which was very odd but great - only adds to the visceral, emotional experience. I've always loved the tone of Paul's piano in Hey Jude. Ringo's little drum fills, as always, are spectacular but restrained. John and George's backing vocals are perfect. Just think about this too ladies and everybody: The Beatles were only 2 years away from breaking up and at this time they were only in their mid to late 20s!!!! Unbelievable what they accomplished in a relatively short period of time. It will never be duplicated let alone surpassed by any band.

One of the first 4 singles released on the Apple label, this song was 7:12 seconds long. That's completely unheard of for a single in the 1960's. It was the longest single to top the British charts up until that time and encouraged other bands to release longer singles.

I was jamming to this song in a parking lot in the shade. I look to my right and this gorgeous college aged young blonde was dancing and singing along to na na na. Showed me again that the Beatles’ music is multi-generational.

Just a note, Julian Lennon's newest album is simply titled "Jude". Sounds like he's finally making peace with his past.

And the photo on the cover of Julian's album "JUDE" is a black and white photo of himself when he was 5 years old, the year John left Julian's mother Cynthia and the year that Paul wrote "Hey Jude" for Julian. (he originally started it out with "hey JULES" which Julian was often called by family and the other Beatles.

One word... Gobsmacked at brilliance.

And Linda was the lucky woman to create new life with this fella. Between the two of them made some pretty good children to become even better adults. And they did a damn good job raising them. Paul and Linda made a damn good team. I'm not talking about the music end of it although that was great. Linda was so good for Paul especially right after the Beatles broke up. Legalities aside The Beatles broke up April 1970.

For my 60th birthday I did a road trip to San Francisco to see Paul McCartney with one daughter with tickets from another daughter who couldn’t go !It was a long drive but well worth itIt was at what was A T & T Park at the time! 40 thousand plus people singing along for over 3 hours to everything from Beatles to Wings to solo career!

Group had given up touring in August 1966, but didn't stop performing live.

Think the best 45 rpm ever A side was Hey Jude and the B side was Revolution, but then again The Beatles has Something and Come Together on another one lol.

And I was ONE of those girls that was in love with Paul (I was 21 when this performance was recorded, but I was 16/17 years old in 1964 when the Beatles first broke in the US.) The FIRST best photo of saw of them was the cover of their "MEET THE BEATLES" ALBUM, and how PAUL looked on that cover. YES it is his EYES that attracted me right off, I thought he was so handsome too, just like YOU said. I still love Paul to this day, he is still my favorite Beatle. YOU ARE THE VERY FIRST REACTOR I have seen in the last 3 years that has EVER made ANY COMMENT about PAUL'S LOOKS and how very handsome he is. FINALLY!!! LOVE your reaction!!'

Paul kept looking over at John because John didn't come in with the harmony like he was supposed to the FIRST time. You see John look down at Paul and raises his eyebrows and shoulders as if to say "What?" and shrugs his shoulders when he realizes he goofed. Paul keeps glancing at John again, for the 2nd time he is supposed to harmonize, and this time John remembers, and Paul does a little laugh.

The Beatles outsold every single group and person who has produced music and records in the history of recording!!!

Love you both. In Liverpool, where I'm from, a jude or judy was a girl, like chick or bird etc, The song was originally Hey Jules, for Julian Lennon, John's son, I imagine because of John's split from Julian's mum. My local pub back in 1968 had a juke box (those were the days). This must have been played a dozen times a night!

Hello from France, The Beatles marked my youth, they were true geniuses, Paul is my favourite, with john they were complementary and so talented, they could have composed so many masterpieces so!!! I will never get tired of listening to their music they were the best and they were inventive. I saw Paul in concert several times in Paris and London. I would give everything to relive that again.

I was just a youngster when this aired, but even at about 9 years old I knew I had just witnessed something special. Even more special memories were when my mom would be walking through my room and sit down on my bed and listen to this song with me. She even liked Paul's screams, lol.

Saw Paul,Linda and babd sing this in front of a 120,000 crowd,who joined on chorus,in 1990❤️👍🎩

One of the original four singles released on the group's new Apple label in August 1968. Singles and albums were still separate for the group.

That’s the thing about the time, what you said about the diversity. I was around (I’m 71) back then, and to me, that’s what the 60’s were about, and I found it so inspiring. I have tried to live my life in an accepting, inclusive way. It makes me sad to see a lot of what’s going on today; seems like it’s gone backwards. Thank you for your reaction; I really enjoyed it.

If you get emotional when you see footage of John Lennon and what could have been, you should watch the movie Yesterday. There's one scene that will make you cry your eyes out.

Song was supposedly written by McCartney to cheer up Julian Lennon when his parents' marriage was ending, but the lyrics are encouragement to a timid lover to pursue the woman of his dreams. Julian was a young child at the time.

@Generation Gap- I am a huge Beatles fan and they are hands down the Greatest group ever. Paul was always my fav Beatle and Hey Jude is one of the greatest songs ever. This perforcmance here had to be in the late 60's. They broke up toward the end of 69.

In this song The Beatles are modeling good behavior. They're showing us what to say to someone. How to be a good friend. It's not always easy.

Even now, play this in a pub, at a wedding, anything, the whole place will be on its feet joining in with the Na-Nas The Beatles are the best ever

It might be the closest thing our culture has to a mass religious/spiritual event when you get a giant stadium crowd singing along to Hey Jude at one of Paul's concerts. I've had that good fortune a couple of times, and it really is something special.

John keeps trying to make Paul laugh 😊

The young Paul was just incredible.

This song, like most of their singles, was never on a Beatles album. It was released with Revolution as the b-side. They have an official live performance video for that song as well. It would be an interesting reaction as even with a two song single their music is sooo very different. And great!

I remember watching that live performance on TV the night it was broadcast on the David Frost Show on London Weekend Television in the autumn of 1968. You can appreciate that in those days everything to do with the Beatles was a major event but that felt extra special and I can remember the following day at school everybody talking about it excitedly.

This was taped in August of 1968, song became a #1 in Fall of 1968. I was 12 years old then. They were singing here with an instrumental version of the record, with Paul's voice doubled with the record in spots, and the back up vocal sboth recorded and live, the instruments also. it was difficult to get a good sound with limited technology back in 1968, and you couldn't hire an orchestra , too expensive, to make the big sound on the 2nd half. We saw this video from the David Frost show in England, in America, on the Smother's Brothers TV show[you should check them out, they were hilarious musical comedians]. This was their biggest selling single Number 1 at 9 weeks in a row in he USA. The Beatles brought the world together for few moments with this TV appearance, you don't see this anymore...all you see are phony brutal reality shows drama shows, and stupid game shows and school shootings. The world was not perfect in 1968 either, but at least we had some hope.

There IS an orchestra there on the set, right behind them, you hear them come in later on the song. "It was difficult to get a good sound with "LIMITED TECHNOLOGY back in 1968"?? Uh, there were a lot of variety shows, that had live singing acts on them and the sound was just fine. I was 21 in 1968 and you make it sound like TV was still in its infancy like it was in the early '50s! LOL!

The Beatles had so much soul. There is magic, positivity and even spirituality in so many of their timeless songs. So impossibly good. They are the GOATs of rock music without question. No one comes close.

This is recorded live at trident studios London! We're david bowie was made famous along with aray of other stars Elton John also were Queen Freddie played the piano at the start of bohemian rhapsody. Some real world class musicians hit these studios ad well as abbey Road.

the last sing-along portion of this video always tears me up. "hey jude" was the beatles biggest selling single out selling "i want to hold your hand" from 5 years before. it was the SECOND biggest seller of the 60s topped only by the archies "sugar sugar" of all things. with all the great counter-culture, mind expanding music of the 60s pop still reigned supreme in the 60s as it always does. go figure. but remember the beatles were NOT a ballad band. i would hardly even classify "hey jude" as a proper ballad. the beatles were a r&r band right down to their dna. and they experimented, quite successfully, with many musical genres and styles. with most rock bands of the late 60s and 70s their best music could be found on their albums. but the beatles' singles were just as good as their albums. the beatles didn't put their singles on their british albums. but, in the u.s., capitol records did up until 1967. but "hey jude" only appeared on an album in 1970 with capitol's release of the "hey jude" compilation album which wasn't released in britain. the beatles were so much fun. and so interesting to study. their history is just as much fun as their music. but without the music you'd have no history. THE BEATLES WERE JUST MAGICAL! there's no other way to describe them.

When Paul first wrote this song it was called Hey Jules after John's first son, Julien, to help him adjust to his fathers breakup with his mother Cynthia. It was the period seen as the start of the big breakup of the Beatles. With the Double White Album under production, there were many arguments between the Band Members. Ringo left the band for a few months in this time. But, in my opinion, this song was their greatest.

Ladies You know those young audience members near Beatles will never forget once in a lifetime event in their lives.

To me, this is like a Hippie / Love Generation sing-along song where everyone stands shoulder to shoulder while waving sparkles or cigarettes lighters
