Ringo showed a real talent for comedy. He has a very expressive face, and (not surprising for a professional drummer, I guess!) a good sense of comic timing.

I can't imagine how they could have possibly cast anyone better for the role of Paul's grandfather. He was just PERFECT. He stole every scene he was in, even with the Beatles, for crying out loud.

@@raindrops21_9 I’d have to agree about that. Ringo has been in a lot of movies - not all works of art, of course. I think his best work besides the Beatles movies was with David Essex in “That’ll Be The Day” (1973).

0:05 Ringo wants a Gaming Room before Gaming Room is a thing.
Saw AHDN at its release in 1964; hard to describe the sound of so many girls screaming -same decibels as a jet engine, maybe. Saw it in 2014 with a sellout crowd on the big screen in all its black and white glory. No screaming, but applause after the songs. Subtitles would have helped, though -those Liverpool accents! What a great movie; a perfect way to really 'Meet The Beatles'!
That's me other grandfatha...everyone's entitled to two now aren't they? - Paul to John
Ringo with brown eyes. Very clean.
“…and champagne buff-it.” 😂 I love my Beats.
0:21 The way Grandfather John puts the letter in his jacket is so like James Bond. Matter of fact, the buxom woman who'll be beside him for the casino scenes also appeared as the golden woman in the opening credits of Goldfinger, the third Eon-produced Bond film.
3 ай бұрын
Also, just like Paul’s Grandfather later, James Bond also played the games mentioned in 0:06 (Chemin-de-Fer, Baccarat) in both the novels and films, wherein the first time he (first played by Sir Sean Connery) said the iconic "Bond, James Bond" was at a Chemin-de-Fer game. However, in the 2006 movie adaptation of Casino Royale (Daniel Craig’s first film as 007), it was replaced with Texas Hold 'Em Poker. In the train scene, the actor playing the gentleman annoyed by The Beatles' antics appeared in the Goldfinger film.

he’s so adorable 💗
Looks great! Although there is a production photo with Paul’s grandfather in it in color and his hair is actually brown!
"Champagne Buff-ett" always gets me
Should definitely be preserved as a unique piece of pop culture. It’s not the greatest film ever made but it does capture the Fab Four as they REALLY where . Why ? Because they can’t act ! This is them , just being themselves ; it’s a film version of the personas we see in ad hoc interviews where Paul makes ‘ business -like ‘ statements in a serious voice, whilst Lennon does his ‘ gurning ‘ and Quasi - modo party piece . Of course , pretending to be a spastic is no longer considered funny ( it was of it’s time ) . The professional actors and well known family entertainers like Wilfred Bramble and Victor Spinetti graciously toned down their performance to make sure the lads weren’t overshadowed. It captures The Beatles at a period when Pop was still a post war novelty and politics hadn’t quite hijacked the 1960s yet. This is The Beatles , the way they should be remembered.

I still think pretending to be a spastic is funny. I just think it's in vogue to pretend that you don't find it funny. We all laugh. It is what it is.
@stechriswillgil3686

@@Matthew-ve7uv we’ve gone to the other extreme now, where crying is all the rage. There isn’t a day goes by, where some tart in the papers is either whingeing or laughing or mixing the two ! We live in a talentless era where notions of insight, art, beauty and skill no longer count. Instead of beautiful talented actresses like Jane Fonda, Brigitte Bardot or Rita Hayworth or great singers like Joni Mitchell and Barbara Streisand we on the big screen . The public is more interested in the likes of Gemma Collins sulking about her weight ! I swear, that ‘ paragon ‘ of virtue will replace the bloody Mona Lisa ……….not in The Louvre but on the walls of ‘ Sugar Hut ‘ in somewhere like Slough !

If you read the book love me do, the writer talks to them about their upcoming film. John says it’s not true to how they really are because instead of saying “who’s the old man” he would really say something like “who’s the fuckin cripp.”
@stechriswillgil3686
2 жыл бұрын
@@alexpollock6932 Ha , ha ! True. But, even back in the mid 60s they couldn’t have got away with saying that on camera ! I’m really talking about their style and demeanour ; the script is censored ( obviously) , but they would have said ‘ crip ‘ in the same tone of voice and manner. I’ll tell you who they really where : in their early days they mixed with villains, brigands and people who ran clubs and nightclubs. They socialised with people who we refer to today as ‘ gangland ‘ families back in Liverpool. Nasty pieces of work. True, Paul was cute & a bit naive in 1960/61 but Ringo & John could have the shit kicked out of you to order ! Lovely songs, lovely talent and angelic little faces ………..but fucking nasty young bastards too. Always approach this 60s culture with caution , it’s not what it seems .
@mjc6524

it's basically a both cleaner-mouthed but exaggerated version themselves. Lennon being the sarcastic one, Paul being the bussiness-like one (all the other beatles attest Paul's a workaholic), Ringo being actually the calmed down (relative to the others) and George always doing his own stuff, without much fanfare.
he *is* a clean old man
Well, he was very clean.

Apart from how this is slightly unsusual but cool all the same, I am so upset that I couldn't see Ringo's smirk after saying "that's mine!" in colour.
Paul giving the Jim Halpert from the Office face at the end.

SOMEBODY PLEASE GIVE THAT LETTER BACK TO RINGO
The colorization makes it look more like "Help!".
Keep it in black and white. That's one of the many charms of this great movie.
This is just fantastic!
United Artists who ever owns the movie now should do a full colourisation of the movie and add as a bonus disc on the 60th anniversary bluray in 2024. It really shows that the original producers thought The Beatles were just a passing fad at the time that they didn't pay the extra money to rent colour camera's. They would not make the same mistake with Help! a year later.

UA should release the scene of Paul with the actress. It was filmed but for some reason it wasn’t included in the final cut of the movie. I have the novel of “A Hard Day’s Night” and it’s in in the novel, too. All of the Beatles have a little “solo” scene in the movie except Paul. I don’t know why his scene was dropped - I’d dearly love to see it someday.
@scotpens

Actually, "A Hard Day's Night" was made in black-and-white for artistic, not financial reasons. The director, Richard Lester, wanted the film to look like a documentary -- and in the mid-1960s, most documentaries and newsreels (as well as a good many feature films) were still in black-and-white. Black-and-white gives the movie a timeless quality that it wouldn't have if it had been made in color.
@cak8132

@@scotpens I agree. I love “A Hard Day’s Night” in black and white. That’s how I saw it way back in 1964 and I don’t think colourizing it will really add to it except for novelty purposes. Having it in black and white adds to the documentary feel of the movie and also provides some beautiful cinematography in the film particularly when the Beatles are singing on set. “And I Love Her” and “If I Fell” come to mind immediately.
