It's very much a 'you're going too far, this is where we stop this', but carmy just kept going because he is lost. Richie's actor sold it so well, like they get that far in arguments often and that line is always the stopping point but not this time.

In the episode "Seven Fishes", Jimmy was reminiscing about his dead dad and how chocolate bananas remind him of his dad to Tiff (Richie's ex) when she was trying to thank him for the job (that Jimmy gave Richie to save him). It was Richie's way of saying thank you for giving the restaurant another chance and showing Jimmy that he's good with people because he remembered that small detail from 5 years ago.

I think the writers should've made Jimmy's chocolate banana story more memorable, since I've seen a lot of people (both IRL and reactors) miss the significance.

There's been one comment on this episode that's stuck with me: that Carmy's become the antithesis of Donna. Donna had people who wanted to help, yet believed she had no one, while Carmy believed he couldn't help himself, even though he believed in others. And it's crushing that he never got to see how his brigade did, even without his presence. I'm curious to see how things progress for him in the next few seasons.

What's interesting is Carmy does become his Mother for most of this one episode, where he was stuck in a cold place, couldn't see the problems or help but kept yelling while the team worked really well together, got stuck in his head and his own problems that he hurt the one person he loved the most and then yells at Ritchie for calling him Donna, just like Donna. Everyone is talking about the same thing; Carmie, Donna, Pete, but to me, the best part of the episode is actually Ritchie. The call back to the previous season finale where; when everything went to sh!t, he was the only one who kept his cool. He's the only one who has experience being in the weeds and keeping his composure. Does the same thing here, except now, he's got the skills to match the drive. In fact, it's a double callback because instead of Sydney breaking down (other than barfing) and lashing out and running away, she's trying to calm everybody down.

So many highs and lows, one minute your hyped because they start flowing well together and getting all those orders out and then the very next you are completely wrecked watching Donna not be able to celebrate with her kids and Pete have to try to convince her with no success and then lie to his wife on top of that. As someone who's been a line cook for a few years, the amount of line cooks who do meth or coke or drink on the job is wild lol. They're not wrong, they would not survive without it. Most of them have multiple jobs it's the only way with how the system is. They actually do perform better, can't say they will live a long life but works for years when they're young Also, Carmy was brutal at the end but he was right. Running a restaurant is a 24/7 job. You can't have distractions like that. I've seen entire families fall apart when it's a family run business. Cicero warned him and he was right. Carmy even knew it, hence giving the fake number to her. That's why he blames himself so much because he allowed it.

I think what doomed carmy was a lack of communication with both clare as well as his coworkers. He continuously dodges sources of anxiety (important phone calls from both clare and to the fridge guy). I think if he matured and became more grounded he could make it all work.

Carmy and his mom Donna need to be forced to go to therapy before they do even worse things to the ones they love. I truly believe Donna has either bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, or likely even both. And if you look at how Carmy himself not only self sabotages and self destructs, he also clearly has mental health problems. I’m convinced that whatever mental health problems Donna has she has passed on to Michael and Carmen.

I thinks she’s got BPD (borderline personality disorder) along with alcoholism. My mom has BPD and so does my brother and neither of them were diagnosed until they had a psychotic episode that caused them to get arrested and then mandatory therapy. I started going to therapy a couple years ago and was diagnosed with CPTSD. My brother has that too, and it’s essentially chronic PTSD from exposure to long or reoccurring traumatic events. Between his panic attacks and then that crazy stuff with his boss in NY, I’m thinking that’s what Carmy has. Probably Mikey too which is how he ended up on drugs.

Carmy fully became his mom in this episode. He self sabotaged himself because he doesn’t feel he deserves something good, just like his mom self sabotaged herself from going into the restaurant because she too doesn't believe she deserves to be there to experience something good (the pride of seeing the success of her children). Carmy and his mom literally had the same arc in this episode to show that they have become one in the same & this was further emphasised when Carmy was called Donna(his moms name) during his argument with Ritchie... This was to show how the pathology of anger and self sabotage has been successfully transferred from mother to son.

Keep in mind that most clients of fine dining like this doesn't say the food sucked or it was meh right on to chef or staffs face. They usually review the food or the quality of restaurant after they've left. Considering this show loves to throw a curve ball at its audience, I doubt this was a 100% success.

i'm probably gonna sound like an ass, but honestly, i didn't really care for claire that much. she was such a nothing character that the writers tried so hard to make us like by literally having other charaters keep repeating how awesome she is. she lacked the depth other female characters have and was written like some sort of male fantasy to the point that i would genuinely 100% believe if it turned out that she was just in carmy's imagination. and i won't deny that she helped carmy get out of his comfort zone and challenged his unhealthy worldview, but other than that? i just couldn't bring myself to care about their relationship and i would be lying if i said i wasn't kind of glad when the breakup happened. it was all just so out of nowhere. there was no mention of her before (i don't think), but then suddenly this perfect, quirky girl appears who's kind of lowkey obsessed with carmy (i'm sorry you cannot tell me that the phone number thing wasn't weird if not creepy) and apparently everyone in the cast knows her and is just in love with her. it just didn't feel genuine, or earned, is what i'm trying to say.

  • @LaCheeserie

    @LaCheeserie

Not awful points. The phone number thing was a little creepy, but the actress softens it with her adorablness. Getting the number from Fak is ok, but she asked one too many times if it was ok. Once would have been enough, or not even asking or saying how she got it, and Carmy finds out later.

i think she was meant to just serve that role this season, and not as a permanent fixture in carmys life. Kinda a way for the writers to show what carmy missed out on by being a chef. If she does come back I imagine we'll get a better look into her character bc the writers on this show do their best to give everyone some kind of meaningful storyline

Somebody already replied to your comment but I think you're looking at her from the wrong lens. I get what you're saying , I didn't really feel much about claire . But that was the point, claire is supposed to be a simple, nonchaotic, side character .Shes a foil to carmy who is everything she isn't. Busy, Overworked, stressed ,loud , etc. That's why carm latched onto her because she was his only boring escape away from the restaurant and life.

For a very long time, I felt the same way about myself, as Carmy felt about himself. Ive only recently seeked help, but this show perfectly represents what self sabotage can do to you, and to the people around you. Carmy believes he doesn’t deserve happiness, just like his mother feels the same way about herself. Which is why Richie called him “Donna”. Self Sabotage is a very dangerous and so destructive. Actually watching what couldve eventually happened to me woke me up. This show is a masterpiece.

Carmy thinks he should always be there for his team, what he doesn't realise is that he WAS. Time and time again. Encouraging Marcus, supporting Tina, shooting the shit with Sydney, literally saving Ritchie's fucking life. But for Carmy, this was all a dept that had to be paid. It wasn't a gift he gave to them, it was to repay them for standing by him and helping him emotionally. And because of that, he feels he can never repay them, so any time he spends away just increases the total against him. Naturally as Tina puts it, that's so SO silly. Nobody else at the Bear sees it that way, they just want Carmy to be happy and enjoy the job her loves.

Claire Is annoying! Any normal human being would be like "HI Carmen, it's me!" since he's in the fridge locked up. She literally assumes he is talking about her when in actuality, he is venting to Tina who he thought was still behind the door. All Claire had to do is ask him if he was okay. like girl..He was clearly venting and not saying those things to you. Now she further depended the beef (pun intended) between his cousin and him due to her misunderstanding.

Richie’s L was calling Carmy “Donna” out of frustration. Calling someone by the name of the person who gave them so much trauma is wild. Carmen’s anger after that was visceral. He wouldn’t have gone off on Richie like that otherwise. Which made Richie’s desperate “I love you”s after that hurt so much more. He knew he fucked up.

This is the 1st reaction I've seen that recognizes that Carmy self-sabotages. The forks and fridge issues existed before Claire ever enters the chat. How many times did Carmy waive off help in getting these matters resolved. Richie's ex warned him not to hook Carmy up with Claire because she's "too nice" and he proved it that night. Claire was never the problem. Carmy is more like his mom than he wants to admit...
