The Battle of Stamford Bridge (Old English: Gefeoht æt Stanfordbrycge) took place at the village of Stamford Bridge, East Riding of Yorkshire, in England, on 25 September 1066, between an English army under King Harold Godwinson and an invading Norwegian force led by King Harald Hardrada and the English king's brother Tostig Godwinson. After a bloody battle, both Hardrada and Tostig, along with most of the Norwegians, were killed. Although Harold Godwinson repelled the Norwegian invaders, his army was defeated by the Normans at Hastings less than three weeks later. The battle has traditionally been presented as symbolising the end of the Viking Age, although major Scandinavian campaigns in Britain and Ireland occurred in the following decades, such as those of King Sweyn Estrithson of Denmark in 1069-1070 and King Magnus Barefoot of Norway in 1098 and 1102-1103.

    📌If you like my work you can support me at PATREON: www.patreon.com/HistoryBattles3D Each video is HAND made by a SINGLE creator (me) 1)This means that I create most of the models-textures 2) I create the battlefields and all of the maps 3) I made the animated system for the battles (Τhis is an ongoing process since I'm constantly trying to improve it) 4) And in this video I also made the Voice Over That's why it takes two months or more for each video to be made, which is very time consuming and a huge gamble. Liking-Commenting and Subscribing to the channel will help me continue to work on these videos and even improve them. I will eventually be able to create gunpowder battles, incorporate more animations, motion capture etc. But it ALL depends on your help and support. Thank you very much guys.

    Interestingly, the age of the Anglo-Saxons ended at hastings shortly after this battle. The normans brought bow and arrows and men mounted on horses which the Anglo-Saxons didn't have. The resulting french spoken rule moves us closer to the English we speak today. That and the west side eof france, through marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine, not long after. That gives us one of Frances greatest kings, Richard the lionheart. Both parents were French. He spoke French and he is buried in France. .

    The lone Viking warrior holding the bridge was an enormous Berserker. Harald had used him several times before. In this case, the bridge was narrow and only 2 or 3 Saxons could face him even though the line of soldiers attacking him was long. He killed a minimum of 40 men and possibly as many as 98. He was only killed, when Saxons took to a boat, floated to underneath the bridge and used an extra long spear to thrust up between the planks of the bridge to spear him in the back. Seems like an unfair means to me, but in war, people do what is efficacious, in this case, a cowardly backstabbing. He deserved better after standing alone against and stopping tens of thousands of Saxons.

  • @caractacusbrittania7442
    @caractacusbrittania74423 ай бұрын

    The saxon ffyrd also used long handled axes, And it was reported that they could "cleve" a man in two. To do a forced March north, at speed, fight a bloody battle, then, do a forced March south, at speed, to fight again within just a few days is testament to the saxons will to remain saxon. It was a calculated gamble, that so very nearly paid off, the Norman's at semlac hill Panicked and fled, the saxons poured down the hill from their positions, but we're cut down by Norman cavalry. Seeing this William ordered several similar attacks, and each time the saxons fell for it. At Stamford bridge a lucky arrow caused the vikings to crumble, At Hastings, a lucky arrow caused the saxons to crumble. Williams win, pushed Britain away from ancient serfdom, Adopting a more Latin based romanesque set of laws. Probably a good thing. Beserk is a bloodlust that manifested itself in men in battle, the lone berserker, the giant, Did not enter this bloodlust, rather he knew his position protected him, and the saxons could only attack one at a time, That shows an extreme level of discipline.

    This is a battle we studied in tactics class in the Army, Harrold made two horrible mistakes. One had no scouts out and allowed his enemy to come upon him unaware. Second at that time Stanford bridge was wide enough for a single wagon to pass on, why would you ever allow your enemy to put his entire army across without attacking. A smart man would have waited until he has about a third of his force across then attacked pushing them back into the river and clogging the bridge.

    Harold Godwinson and his Huscarls almost certainly rode horses to Stamford Bridge and dismounted for the battle as was the custom. The Normans had learned from continental warfare cavalry tactics which gave them the advantage at Hastings.

    I believe the Norse accounts of 'Anglo Saxon' cavalry(Norman knights brought to England by Edward previously) more than modern historians that discount it based on nothing or trying to claim the reports of Stamford Bridge got confused with the Battle Hastings. How the few norse that did make it back knew anything about the battle of hastings I have never heard them satisfactorily explain.

    It’s actually a huge military blunder for the Vikings. They were relaxing essentially on campaign with no picket/scouts. Most were hung over and many were bathing. A large portion of the men were nearby on ships likely drunk… The army was split on each side of the river. If that was not bad enough they saw the army approaching but due to the glint of the sun they assumed it was another Viking army since one was near. They didn’t think Englishmen were even remotely close…When they realized it was not it was almost too late to properly dress in time to be battle ready. The one bezerker on the bridge is either an embellishment or a minor event during the slaughter that happened that day.

    That might have been the end of Vikings in England. It didn’t end in Scotland until the Battle of Largs in 1266, exactly 200years later. Up until then all the Hebridean Islands, ie the Western Islands, were ruled by the King of Norway. Later, under a betrothal of the Princess of Norway to the Crown Prince of Scotland the islands of Orkney and Shetland were given to Scotland as a dowry of the King of Norway. Sadly, the Princess was lost in a shipwreck on these islands on her way to her wedding. She was known as The Maid of Norway. If the wedding had taken place Scotland would have united with Norway, not England. There are many place names in the Hebrides. For example, Island of Skye is Norse for island of clouds. Glen Forsa on Mull is Norse for glen of waterfalls. I am Scot, so I thought, but my dna says I am 50% scandinavian, ie viking. Personally, I discovered a spiritual love for everything Norwegian. That must be the reason.

    I don't know what all that nonsense about Harald Hardrada was all about. Harald Hardrada was a very experienced viking leader. Harald arrived at Constantinople when he was 19. He fought as a mercenary for the byzantines for eight years. He became the commander of the vangarian guard. He was known for his cunning and ruthlessness. The byzantines taught the fearless viking about tactics and strategy that he masterfully put into use. When he fought at Stamford Bridge he did it as a level headed battlehardened and very experience leader. He skilfully and masterfully organised the vikings until he was hit by an arrow to the neck.

    I'm curious why you selected a bridge of that width. I would assume that it would have been much narrower, perhaps little wider than a cart of the era, say a couple of meters.

  • @historybattles3D

    @historybattles3D

    3 ай бұрын

    That's an interesting observation. In fact there is a very specific reason for its width. Due to the way that my soldiers are pathfinding it was easier for me to make them cross the bridge that was not 2 meters wide. So, I had two choices, either to not show in real time the army crossing the river and use a narrow bridge, or show the army crossing in real time but widen the bridge. I chose the latter because I thought it would look better.

Otherwise I would have just cut to the army already crossed.

    I think you have to take the chronicler of the battle of Stamford bridge with a pinch of salt. Firstly Snorri was writing years after the event. Secondly Haralrd Hardråde was an extremely experienced army commander; the question has to be asked, " why would such an experienced commander leave the safety of Yorks walls and let his men remove armer and sun themselves on the river bank knowing full well a Saxon army must be marching against him and secondly as an experienced commander he must have had scouts out scouting for enemies. So sorrry, I don't believe this is how the battle took place.

    So, King Harold beat the Vikings at Stamford Bridge. Then got news that the Normans had landed in South England. Marched down to Hastings where he met them and was defeated. Now comes the historical question. Who were the Normans? To me, they were the Vikings. They were called the North Men in France as the Vikings had taken what is now called Normandy and remained there. Yes they had armour and used the same weapons used by the French but they were still Vikings so, did the Viking era end? Or was it just transferred to another group of Vikings?
