The Battle Beneath the Stars | Of Fëanor and the Silmarils : Silmarillion Explained - Part 6 of 6

It's all been building to this! The final chapter in the tale of Fëanor and the Silmarils. For the first time in millennia, the Noldor are back in Middle Earth. And that's going to change everything! *Also watch to the end for a fun fact about Boromir!*

I firmly believe that feanor is not a bad hero. He's a good villain. And a necessary reminder in tolkien's stories that Pride goeth before the fall. We should all strive to be as graceful and Majestic as he was, yet we should all be wary enough to never become him. He was quite literally too much of a good thing

I just realized how sad the order of the Dagor-nuin-Giliath was. After the First Kinslaying, we can understand just how horrific Elf slaying Elf would have been at the time, and the first soldiers Morgoth sends out when he sees that the Elves have come against him...are former Elves that he twisted and bred and corrupted into unrecognizability. In a way, Morgoth immediately engineered a second Kinslaying without either side being aware of it.

Excellent series Rainbow Dave! I absolutely LOVE your channel! Which in my opinion, is the best Tolkien channel on KZread. Not a day goes by that I don't check it out to see what's new or just to revisit some of my favourite videos. You do such a stupendous job and your storytelling ability is topnotch. I agree that Feanor is a villain, and perhaps even worse, he is a horrible father! He knowingly binds his sons to an oath that he knows will only cause grief and destruction in their lives. If not for that oath, at least a few of his sons such as Maedhros and Maglor may have had very different and happier lives. Thanks again for your efforts, they are sincerely appreciated.🙂

I think the reason a lot of people (myself included) like Feanor is a mix of his sheer charisma and his underdog status. He has absolutely no chance of winning, and though he is too proud to realize it, we as the readers do. The fact that we know he's going to die in failure from the moment the Flight of the Noldor begins makes us sympathize with him a bit more and start rooting for him to just do as much damage to Morgoth as he can and hopefully die in a way that's badass instead of just tragic. I think his responses to the herald of Manwe and Doom of the Noldor helps cement his (at least superficial) status as a badass, too: "So! Then will this valiant people send forth the heir of their King alone into banishment with his sons only, and return to their bondage? But if any will come with me, I say to them: is sorrow foreboded to you? But in Aman we have seen it. In Aman we have come through bliss to woe. The other now we will try: through sorrow to find joy; or freedom, at the least. Say this to Manwe Sulimo, High King of Arda: if Feanor cannot overthrow Morgoth, at least he delays not to assail him, and sits not idle in grief. And it may be that Eru has set in me a fire greater than thou knowest. Such hurt at the least I will do to the Foe of the Valar that even the mighty in the Ring of Doom shall wonder to hear it. Yea, in the end they shall follow me. Farewell!" "We have sworn, and not lightly. This oath we will keep. We are threatened with many evils, and treason not least; but one thing is not said: that we shall suffer from cowardice, from cravens or the fear of cravens. Therefore I say that we will go on, and this doom I add: the deeds that we shall do shall be the matter of song until the last days of Arda."

The Silmarils were Fëanor. His essence, his body, his mind, and his whole lineage...it was foolish of him to put so much of himself into them, but you would curse and pursue someone should they steal your hands, your mind, or your very sense of self...not only that, Silmarils were not just the fraction of himself he put into them, but through his craftsmanship, they were multiplied portions of himself and as you said, the light of Valinor and the hallowed by Varda...they are like his firstborn, his essence in one, and the greatest creation of precision and beauty in one, blessed by the gods...though it is hard for us to see them as only nothing but an inanimate object, a gem...the intangible spiritual and physical world are not strictly divided.

@Cerberus free will, sure, but the valar released the most powerful amongst their ranks, the origin of evil, out on these naive elves, and then were surprised when the elves were poisoned by him. If you take a naive child, even one with free will, and let a serial killer raise them, you shouldn't be surprised when they have some murderous tendencies. That's on the valar: Manwe, specifically. Tolkiens Christian basis breaks down here a little bit: Morgoth isn't the serpent/apple, because Eve is told this is something she shouldn't partake in, whereas Manwe signals to the elves Morgoth is safe and repentent, and there is no risk, so they can't really be blamed when they partake of his poison, because they were told it wasn't poison, and in their naivete couldn't tell the difference.

What you fail to realize is that the Valar never truly understood evil, yes some of the Valar didn't trust Melkor but they didn't understand evil, Melkor is the first actual malicious spiritual being and they never saw his kind before so i would keep that in mind before blindly accusing the Valar, they too are learning, they weren't all knowing gods that existed forever, they were the offspring of the thoughts of Eru. They didn't understand that Melkor would remain hateful forever, Manwe believed that Melkor has changed, he is his brother after all. Besides they never created or ruled anything before Arda, you can't learn anything if you never fail. The Valar did a great job nonetheless, through error and mistake. Eru has the ultimate power of how the things and the world will unfold. No matter how much one tries, he will only prove to be Eru's instrument in making things far more wonderful. Now if Manwe didn't trust Melkor and casts him though the door of the night, everyone lives happily ever after, but this is not that type of a story, it's the good vs evil. It's a silly way of asking questions that alter the story of the author. I can still find people asking that why didn't they asked the eagles to fly them to Mordor to throw the ring. An equally stupid question and an argument that destroys the story in every way.

Thank you so much for these wonderful videos. Though I love LoTR and The Hobbit and re-read them often I tried several times to read the Silmarillion and just couldn't make it past the first few chapters each time, without ever finding out what the silmarils are and their story, so now I finally understand that and so much more about the history leading up to the Middle Age. It's interesting that your Fun Fact at the end here was about Boromir who you describe as another anti-hero similar to Feanor because having watched this series I think there are very strong parallels between Feanor\Boromir and Finarfin\Faramir. The elder of both being the bolder of the two considered most blessed, spirited and talented by their fathers, and the younger (because more wise and peaceful) thought less of by their fathers, yet in the end proving the much stronger in character, and more worthy leaders and eventual rulers of their peoples bringing times of prosperity, peace and growth. And in similar ways Feanor was corrupted by Melkor and Borromir by Sauron (through his ring), yet Finarfin resisted Melkor's attempts at corruption and Faramir resisted the corruption\temptation of Sauron's ring which shows that the latter two have an immense inner strength which is not often recognised or praised. I would ask then if both Farmir and Finarfin are in a sense also anti-heroes though in an unconventional but good sense because they lack what in some cases can be the negative heroic characteristics of boldness and ambition.... perhaps an inverse anti-hero??? Hard to describe but I think it shows Tolkein's brilliance that he writes and recognises such characters.

However, you left out one of the most epic parts after the rising of the moon when Fingolfin’s host play their trumpets at it’s first sight. When the Sun rises and flowers spring below the marching feet of Fingolfin. And leading with Fingon, Turgon, Galadriel and the son’s of Finarfin, he unfurled his banners, blue and silver and marched to the very gates of Angband and smote upon the doors with their spears. And they shook the towers of Thangorodrim and Morgoth quaked in fear. But Fingolfin being of other temperament than his brother fell back to the land of Hithlum and dwelt by the lake Mithrim to gather his strength and to meet again with the sons of Feanor.

Feanor is the epitome of self-important. You see this often with scientists and inventors, creators, entrepreneurs. Their craft is more important than the people around them. It makes me wonder if Tolkien had a serious dislike for the sciences and those that delve too deeply into the arcane . Guns for example are a weapon he reported dislike (more like the mechanized warfare transition he was experiencing in his life) and those they kept inventing bigger and more effective methods to kill their brethren. I think he's there a cautionary tale for those who ignore what's truly important in life and that is the people you love....or something after that fashion.

Feanor is a force of Fate. He was doomed from the moment of his birth. He was the only orfan and possibly the only step-child in all of Valinor. At many times it feels like he doesn't really have control over his life. He was quite literally made to set events into motion, and give the Noldor the chance to write history, for better or for worse. Without Feanor the Middle Earth would have been Morgoth's playground, and if the Valar would have ever cared to intervene of their own initiative, it might have been too late. That said he's also the most badass character, which is no small feat. Yes even more than Fingolfin, although it's close.

My only argument against your very well put points about Fëanor is... He fought for the Light that was stolen by the Dark. And was willing to become dark to bring it/them (the Light/the Silmarils) back to Valinor. Yes, for selfish reasons perhaps, but still, for the Elves... and all that was good, after being betrayed and tricked by Melkor. He was a King, and that is what Kings do. He HAD to do it. All or nothing. A true Byronic hero.

Fëanor the douchebag, pride at its finest. It's a real shame that he couldn't see past his fancy jems. He could have built a kingdom that could have taken down Morgoth way sooner. Also the most underrated Tolkien content channel. Keep it up brother, you're a legend.

Prince Arthas in Warcraft seems to draw a lot of roots from the Feanor character. Driven mad over some artifact leading to the wholesale slaughter of all his people as the actual dark force connives and schemes it together from the shadows. After Faenor is gone there is only the dark force fused with the artifact that is the essence of the fallen hero the story goes on to call the lich king.

Absolutely incredible work Dave, as a lifelong fan of fantasy and most of all its father (although i couldn't agree more with your take that it's not fantasy it's a mythology all it's own that rivals other myth and even creation stories. Imo more than rivals but i don't wanna be rude to believers!❤) I think this channel is peerless, I have watched endless videos and although many channels are good and insightful, you by far have given me so many pieces i feel like i was missing (i.e. the rings own dominion ensuring its destruction, that was brilliant) even after multiple readings and here i get the feeling like I am not just hearing a reading of the silmarillion (currently anyway lol) but that you poured over all the texts to collect all the information, all the odds and ends that are pertinent to create a chronological telling I have been longing for. I actually had a similar idea but i dont think i could outdo what you've done here my friend (now I'm leaning more to my musical side and thinking.... Silmarillion theme album, creation in music its perfect!). Hey if you ever wanna talk Tolkien, even down to the smallest details (cus when you write like Tolkien ohh do they matter) i would love to chat you up as i have never found someone who cares (or knows) the lore enough they wanna talk about Ungoliant's possible origins for hours lol (and id like to float an idea of why she maybe jussst maybe could be a wayward or lost Valar (6 pairs, 2 loners and melkor whos kicked out, but we're I to guess id assume eru made him a mate as well, or atleast a parallel) although your void thought was my first as well, and is still my reigning explanation, Its an exciting thought like "shes from the primordial elemental powers of the void, world and before, specifically of darkness" how else do we explain her power even before the trees were devoured. The whole pantheon was there! But could there be what eru did not will?) I stream on twitch but you can aslo find me on twitter and IG as @7heroyalme. Sorry that ran WAY long! I think those last words have more wisdom than he ever had in valinor. Going through his life in the middle of dying he must have known that his oath kept him and his kids from going back yet mandos premonition keeps them from winning. He knew they are stuck, so for him to tell them to go fight it out til their last breath makes me think he thought lessening morgoths strength meant that someone else within his own kind can win.

We're not told much about Melian before she met Thingol, but I would speculate she was (perhaps not consciously) waiting in Middle-earth to meet her future husband. I get the impression that Melian meeting Thingol wasn't just a chance encounter, it was part of Iluvatar's Plan. She had to marry Thingol, because Luthien had to be born. She is an agent of Eru Iluvatar's grand design. It's really awesome that you're working on creating stories! I love writing, it's what I spend most of my days doing. I've spent seven years writing a novel that, fingers crossed, will be finished around the begining of next year. It's historical fiction (nothing to do with Tolkien), but I'm very excited to complete it.

I love how Finwë's decisions, Fëanor's jealousy and pride, just backed the whole family tree up at this point in a corner. Swearing that oath was just as destructive as letting MELKOR off the leash. Which is due to Finwë if I remember that correctly. Bad judgement, pride, jealousy, violence. Death of so many elves. Maybe it was a blessing that Finwë didn't live long enough to see what his children and grandchildren did.

Regarding your mention of Boromir not knowing that Aragorn was Thorongil, his last words to Aragorn might hint that he actually knew. Quote: "I would have followed you, my brother, my captain, my king.". Sure, he was the chieftain of the Dunedain, but Boromir had no real reason to call Aragorn "his" captain, unless, he knew he was Thorongil.

I think even though not explicitly stated in Tolkien's writings, that the Silmarils, in a similarity to the One Ring way down the road, have a power over some. Maybe even those of impure hearts or wills even. Definitely not in the same sense, like a magical or dominating type of way. But in the sheer beauty of them brings a type of greed out of these beings. It doesn't, at all, justify Fëanor's actions, but I can kinda see why he goes in so hard to get them back and that being his main reason of war, putting the death of Finwë as a more secondary reason. Not to mention they literally are imbued with a part of his own self or power (sorta like the One Ring and Sauron.) Mandos didn't need foresight to see that because of his need for vengeance stemming from, basically greed, wasn't going to end well for anyone that went with Fëanor.

I've only listened to the Silmarillion 2 or 3 times so i really had mixed feelings about Faenor (no i can't spell but you know to whom i refer). Nevertheless i grew up with Tolkien's Hobbit. That was my bedtime story growing up. Admittedly i didn't move onto the LotR trilogy until the movies came out and then read the books to understand my parent's complaints about them. That didn't happen until i reached adulthood and really started digging into Tolkien's writing. The only complaint i have is he takes "attention to detail" far beyond requirement and even into the ludicrous. However he builds a world like a master of the craft. Anyway back to what i was originally going to say, now that i have recently discovered your channel and started watching your vids, i have to agree that Faenor is the greatest of the firstborn children of The One and had the biggest fall into madness of all the children of Illuvatta (again can't spell but you know who i mean) that ever walked the world. He was great and had great power and great potential and then selfishness and pride made him into the greatest d**k of all Arda. I mean I'm actually debating in my mind which is worse. He doesn't even go to avenge his father's murder, or Denethor of Gondor using grief for Boromir as a cloak for his ambition.

Feanor is not a villain or a hero. He is an elf with free will. I would argue, that like many prodigies, his mental health was always at risk and it deteriorated over time. He was a victim of consequence and then he chose to stop being a victim even if it meant doing evil. And he did. I don't blame crazy people for being crazy, but that doesn't mean we should tolerate or justify their actions either. One thing is for sure. He is one hell of a compelling character.
