The Batman brings us into the grimiest, ugliest Gotham City that we’ve ever seen on screen-and we love it. The movie is packed with Easter Eggs and References to some of the greatest Batman stories of all time: The Long Halloween, Year One, The Court of Owls, Earth One, Year Zero, Dark Knight Returns, and many more.
There are also nods to past Batman movies like the Dark Knight and Joker-as well as great cinema-such as Chinatown, Zodiac, Se7en, the Maltese Falcon, the French Connection, and many more.

The movie begins from the Riddler’s POV as he watches the family of Mayor Mitchell. Because this movie begins on Halloween,w e saw a parallel with the movie Halloween-which begins with a POV shot from the villain.
Also, we pointed this out in our ending explained video, but this is one of many parallels between Batman and the Riddler. Later in the movie, Bruce watches Selina with binoculars, which we also see from the first person point of view.
Later Riddler talks about how wearing a mask defined his identity, and that Batman helped him realize who he really is. We’ve seen this trope with Batman villains, a lot.
Mayor Mitchell’s son is dressed as a ninja for Halloween. Ninjas are silent assassins, and the riddler sneaks into their penthouse to kill Mitchell like a ninja.
So Mitchel’’s study is decorated with newspaper headlines about the Maroni drug bust-which we later learn was set up by Falcone to remove one of his competitors. In the comics, Sal Maroni was the mobster who splashed acid on Harvey Dent, turning him into Two-Face. And Maroni was also in the dark Knight.
There is another bit of a headline that reads sea wall construction halted. So if any of you were wondering how the riddler’s bombs were able to break the wall so easily, now you know. The infrastructure money to reinforce the wall was likely routed back into the pockets of Falcone and his minions.
So the mayor is on the phone in this scene. Looking back, he;s probably talking to Falcone. He mentions taht eh thought he’d be doing better in the pools, after they had the gotham post run positive stories about him-like the headlines in his sturdy. This shows that the corruption also infiltrated the press.
This systemic corruption is influenced by the noir detective film Chinatown, where a corrupt business interest siphons off the water of Los Angeles's for his own financial gain. By the way we made up the easter egg about the legends of superheroes. There are other chinatown allusions I’ll talk about a little later.
Because the mayor is the face of all this corruption, the riddler covers up his face, so the city can begin to hear the truth.
So….did you jump when the riddler first appeared? I did. Reminded me of this moment when a stranger calls back.
In fact, Batman and Riddler make their first appearances in the same way. By emerging from darkness into lightExcept Batman enters from the darkness, moving into the light. And the riddler stays in the darkness until light shines on him. Just like he is shining a light on the corruption of Gotham city.
In fact, the riddler’s whole goal was for Batman to bring Falcone into the light-which is foreshadowed by his very first appearance in the movie.
This version of the riddler is heavily influenced by the comic batman earth one. In tha omic, the riddler is more of a mad bomber, who leaves clues for Batman to follow his trail.
In fact, this movie adapts many aspects of that story. It follows a year one batman in a very grounded, realistic universe. I think he even trips over his cape at one point.
Another comic that this story borrows form is the great Long Halloween, by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale.

    Yep, that was part of Batman’s arc in this movie realizing his approach was wrong. In his quest for vengeance, he was instilling as much fear into the victims he saved as in the criminals he beat up, which obviously was not his intention. He needed to be a symbol of hope for the victims, a hero who will make them feel safe not scared.

    I found it interesting that when The Batman went to rescue the people during the flood, they hesitated at first. It showed that, up until that point, he was viewed more as a villain than a hero. Small details: Penguin's feet are bound when they interrogate him after the car chase, so he's left to waddle after them - like a penguin. You can tell when Riddler was telling him how Bruce Wayne was privileged while the rest of the orphans suffered, it truly got to him. I'm sure the next film will have him hiding in plain sight more. @@silverhand8744 You’re absolutely correct. Matt Reeves stated that his two biggest influences when creating his version of the Riddler were Kevin Spacey’s John Doe from the movie Seven and the San Francisco Zodiac Killer. The Riddler uses murder, puzzles, and Riddles that he sends to the police as well as cryptic information that causes them to explore the physical clues left behind by the Riddler, just like John Doe does in the movie Seven. In addition to that, The Riddler’s overall costumed appearance is heavily modeled after the Zodiac Killer, right down to the detail where the Riddler wears his glasses over his mask just like the Zodiac. Personally, I love this interpretation of the Riddler. It gives him a lot more depth and it really helps him look creepy while still setting him apart from Batman’s other villains. Part of wishes they kept that Joker deleted scene in the film but I totally understand why they cut it out. They wanted to set up the Joker in a very mysterious way by saving his big reveal for a future movie.

  • @joshuareeves5103
    @joshuareeves51032 жыл бұрын

    I'm almost certain that the Riddler doesn't know he is Bruce. I think he genuinely hated Bruce and wanted him killed and I think he genuinely considered Batman his partner and thought they were friends. Kind of like a psycho stalker who thinks the imagined relationship with the one being stalked is real. This was my impression of the final monologue and why he was so upset. Sure, he was disappointed batman didn't figure it out but he was also pissed about being insulted by a perceived friend. I think that interpretation speaks powerfully to the message of the movie, that batman was having an effect on Gotham in a negative way. Also spoke to how crazy the Riddler was. One more piece of information to this theory. More clues were left labeled "to the batman" after the planned death of Bruce. If he was actually meaning to kill Bruce, why would he leave a note "to the batman" on the bomb and then later in the bat cage?

  • @ItsScapeGoated

    @ItsScapeGoated

    Жыл бұрын

    Honestly, I think he knew and he was certain Bruce wouldn't die from that bomb. That he'd not be there when it went off, or he'd be smart enough to disarm it. He wants "Bruce", as in the mask, to be removed and leave only Batman there.

    The scene where Batman saves the gothamites, Batman uses his chestarang to cut the rope. In this process he endes up losing it. Just watched, it's really good. One easter egg (I think) I noticed is Alfred mentioning to Bruce that he used to work at The Circus. I could be missing some comic context but to me that sounds like a nod to the John Le Carre novels, where The Circus is the location of MI6, which would line up with Alfred's background in the film.

  • @d_ruby

    16:14: That Alfred was the Wayne Family’s bodyguard is also supported by Alfred previously serving as a spy for the British Gov’t (which is also the backstory for Alfred in the comics and in BTAS.) Alfred says at one point, “I learned this in the Circus…” “The Circus” is a colloquialism for the British secret service during the Cold War. The term was popularized by John le Carré in books like “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”

The epic music after introducing Batman and the Riddler, slowly fading into the piano version where they were investigating the mayor's house was such a nice touch. So if this movie's Riddler, whose real name we never actually find out because he's got multiple aliases, is maybe potentially the son of the guy who in the comics is Thomas Elliot's father, then this character could almost be seen as a sort of a Riddler/Hush hybrid. No one else but me seemed to notice that every time Batman and Catwoman were on screen together, the music playing was very reminiscent of the music playing in Batman Returns when they're together. Slow, full of strings, sad...in fact the score used in the Batman for them felt like it was composed by Danny Elfman. It was a nice touch.

    There were two things that my wife pointed out to me that weren't really addressed in this video. The first being that the Subway Terminal that Batman works out of is called Wayne Terminus. The terminus is where the train makes its last stop. The second thing I wanted to point out is that in the first fight scene Batman beats up the Joker gang to save the businessman, and then he leaves him scared and shivering and soaked with rain. In the final scene Batman saves all of the people in the stadium, but instead of leaving them soaked and alone to figure it out by themselves, he helps them get to safety. In my opinion this is showing that he has grown, and realized that being Batman means more than just beating up criminals, it means helping people who need it.

    Amazing movie, though I’m wondering if anyone else noticed the large amount of similarities it shared with the Telltale games (I know not a whole lot of people played them). The Wayne twist, the cycle of corruption between Falcone, the mayor, etc, the characterization of Riddler (to an extent, especially the torture devices), even certain set pieces and shots (the truth about Thomas Wayne being revealed to Batman via a projector, a fight in a mayoral debate venue with Catwoman involved, overall Batman and Catwoman moments and shots, Falcone trying to relate to and pull in Bruce over a game of pool, etc.) I was even getting strong Children of Arkham vibes with the Riddler’s followers and orphans. I doubt Reeves had any real exposure to these games, so I find it pretty interesting how much they share in common.

    Y'know, I thought the fact that the chest emblem is clearly a batarang blade would put to rest all the talk about it being made from a gun. I've said this 100 times at this point, but here we go again: NOTHING about that chest emblem looks like it's made from any part of any gun. Do people not know what guns look like? Because that's what I'm starting to think. EDIT: 'Also, his whole suit looks like it could be, like, made of guns.' Well, that definitely confirms my hypothesis. 😂

That's why he didn't fight the Batman, because he wasn't a full member of the gang yet. You could tell that his heart wasn't in it. Batman saw that and that's why he let him go without beating his ass.

    One of the greatest bait-and-switches is how it introduces the Riddler before Batman. We are led to believe that the mayor's son (who in a possible sequel could become Robin) is Bruce, with decades of psychological conditioning behind that, but then we see the eyes of a man in the shadows. That man turns out to be the Riddler. And Bruce is fighting crime in the streets at the time. Perfect bait-and-switch.

But you should check more interviews of the creators, like Matt Reeves spoke about that he finds interesting that people thought that the bat simbol was the gun of Batman's parents murder, but he just wanted a utilitarian place for a knife. And also he said that he is not planning necessarily to use the joker in future movies, he likes Mr Freeze as a possible villain.

    I haven't seen anyone mention this yet but in The Batman there's a restaurant called Good Times and I heard that Good Time is the film that made Matt Reeve's want to cast Pattinson as Batman. It could be a reach but my knowledge of mise en scene makes me think it was intentional. Also a lot of people are complaining that Bruce Wayne wasn't playboy Bruce but if he were like that in the first film, it wouldn't leave any room for character growth. We even see that in the finale he inspired the villains. And he does mention in his closing monologue that he needs to evolve in order to achieve the goals he originally intended.
