In this tutorial, for the basics, i'm doing to show you how to get a flawless looking foundation and how to cover very strong darkness under the eye. For some people a small amount of concealer is all that is necessary, but for others the darkness under the eyes extends all the way around the eye and sometimes above it. In this instance and depending on the colour of the darkness you might need a corrector.

I use the darkness on my lids to my advantage. I apply a little highlighter to my brow bone, and leave the rest of the lid alone; no foundation or shadow. It looks like I put time into eyeshadow. I also don't conceal all the way to my lower lashline; it's natural eyeliner! Less work & time spent, less fighting with my flaws, but instead using them. :)

Same here :) already shadowed eyelids. I don't see the point on concealing and then reconstructing the look. Besides that the few times I did the procedure I always got frightened seeing my eyes getting so small, my face so plain and colorless. I chickened out. :) Anyway thanks for all of your videos Wayne! I really appreciate your work. Without you I would have given up playing with make up a long time ago.

I agree with the others. She had slightly stained lids but it almost looked quite nice. I'd like to see you cover someone with actually BAD under eye darkness. If I don't wear full concealer daily I am ambushed with questions as to weather I am ok or sick or very tired/ill. It's annoying. Please - I love your make up vids - but can you find someone who actually has BAD undereye darkness and then cover it. This seemed like a very minor flaw.

I have pretty dark undereye circles on very pale yellow - based skin. I've tried every trick in the book; different concealers, primers, color correctors, applications by make-up artists. It either turns into a creasy/cakey mess or the circles just shine through. So, I've given up on flawless undereyes. I've accepted that you will always see them, and choose a lighter application regardless. Best decision I've made.

Try concealers geared more towards Asian skin. I had the same issue until I started using a cushion concealer from Etude House. It does the double duty of being a brightening concealer and color corrector and is geared specifically towards fair skin with yellow undertones. I had the exact same issues with creasing/cakiness with the traditional method. I also don't use regular loose powders to set my under eye anymore. E.L.F. makes an under eye setting powder that is amazing, so I use a damp beauty blender and set the concealer with that and it really does wonders for creasing.

I also have that kind of skintone. I just correct the yellow in my skin first and then apply a 1 shade lighter concealer (my concealer is the same shade as Antique Lace paint colour) with a damp beauty blender. Then quickly set it with loose powder before it dries.

Would it be possible to do a demo on someone who does actually have extreme dark circles please? Under my eyes is a bluish black- and I mean black. They are accentuated by the way my checks pop out from my nose. I have never found (in 15 years of searching) a concealer that covers the black under my eyes- all concealers end up looking grey and so horribly obvious that honestly, the black looks better. Every time I see something purportedly for dark circles, the model inevitably has very mild darkness- so I can never see if it would actually work for me, and shopping around isn't always easy. Please help, or maybe point me to somewhere that can.

Katherine Hompes You're right! She seriously barely has any darkness to cover up in the first place. I'm a make up artist, and I share your dark circle issue as well... I have hereditary darkness under my eyes and I'm constantly being asked if I'm sick or tired. Super annoying! What works well for me (and what I do for my clients as well) is a three-step correct/conceal/set. First I use the Bobbi Brown corrector to cancel out the darkness. Now the tricky thing about colour correctors is choosing the right colour- it all depends on the colour of your dark circle. You said your's are bluish-black; this means that you need a salmon/pink undertoned corrector. The Bobbi Brown correctors are made in two undertones with a range of shades: Peach (orange/peach undertones to cover up purple circles) and Bisque (salmon/pink undertones to cover up blue/brown circles). So you would be a Bisque undertone. Now depending on your skin tone/darkness of your circle you would choose WHICH Bisque shade works best (Bobbi Brown makes many). I would start by trying out Medium to Dark Bisque and see if it is doing the job of cancelling out the darkness. If not, try other shades in the bisque range until you can no longer see the dark tones peeking through. Next, you follow up with a concealer that matches your skin tone. My favourite is the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. And finally, set using a powder to prevent creasing. However, remember that under eyes will always crease a bit because we are always blinking/moving our eyes etc. Hope this helps :)

Ashley Dhaliwal that helps heaps! Thank you. Most of the time I feel a bit like Crocodile Dundee (those aren't dark circles! These are dark circles!) And the amount of "Try this cream/drink more water/sleep more" comments are insane- and none of that helps hereditary dark circles.

Katherine Hompes I know how you feel. I get purplish bags under my eyes no matter whether I sleep for 2 hours or for 12 hours, and whenever I use a normal concealer all it does is look caked and does not cover my dark circles at all, but when I use a super thick / pigmented / whatever concealer, it conceals to the point of ridiculousness in the way that I have no structure left on my face at all, and under my eyes simply looks orange. AAGH! can someone recommend me a good concealer to use? I am british and have british skin (that kind of peachy / kind of tan colour as I live in Asia) and all concealers I buy here are the yellowy or orangey undertoned ones as that's the skin colour most asian people have.

Wayne- young skin is so easy to conceal. But this technique on older skin is impossible. One cannot use heavy, creamy foundation under the outer eye nor can you use powder! Tutorials on young women are great, but as a working freelance artist in NYC, I have clients (many in fact) over 40. Eve Pearl has an amazing salmon colored under eye concealer that totally cancels out bluish undertones and works great on older, crepey skin. I know you do tutorials on you mom. Please mix it up and do more women over 40. Those challenges are what I face in my work. I love the challenges- just wish more MUAs acknowledged this demographic. Love you and your work! Shannon

Great video! I enjoyed the tips and might try a sponge for setting under my eyes. You are so right! I find that my eye closes up after I put concealer on and it surprised me for a while but realised that the discolouration I dislike around my eyes just like Lucy's is actually making them look bigger and a touch of eye shadow brings back that illusion but without the extra blueness of under my eyes. I wondered why my lower lid also has the veining but when you said the circulation continues around the whole eye that made more sense. A bit of biology in a makeup tutorial. :-D

I hope you mean concealer creasing under the eyes, because foundation under the eyes is a no-no! Try using less concealer, or one without an emollient (moisturizing) texture. A lot of people pile it on to achieve greater coverage but that'll lead to creasing. If you aren't getting enough coverage, get a more opaque concealer so you have to use less. Also, try setting your concealer with powder (or just try a powder concealer!). This will prevent the emollients in the concealer from settling into the eye's natural creases. And you probably already know this, but pat it on to blend, never swipe!

daan8336 they really help but they don't completely conceal. one tip he did give that helped so much is to JUST put concealer on the part of your eye that is dark, not the entire undereye area.

What is the best way/is there a way to cover dark circles like these when you already have flawless skin and only want to cover up those circles?

I know your question is towards Wayne, but I thought I would help too :D I used to have the same issue as you (back when I had better skin) and I realized the only way to cover dark circles only without wearing any other makeup, is to match the concealer REALLY well with your skin and blend the edges out. That was really hard for me since I can never get a spot on match with any concealer or foundation. Wishing you luck though!

purplepurple135 Thank you for your response, so kind! Anyone that can help, is welcome to answer, that is why I love the YT community. So really get it to match your skin tone rather than finding something to cover up (like salmon colored concealer/corrector)? So then it'd have to be a full-coverage foundation, right? I will go ahead and experiment a little.

  • @purplepurple135

Noëlle Silvia No problem Noëlle! I think experimenting would be best! Maybe use a salmon coloured corrector, and top it off with a concealer that matches the rest of your skin colour, and blend it down a little? Good Luck!!

Oh wow I have 'stained lids' as well (I'm very pale skinned with yellow undertones). the amount of times I got in trouble at school for 'wearing eye makeup' when I wasn't. Lucy's dark undereyes though are nowhere near as dark as mine - I have awful trouble trying to conceal them; mine are more like stripes from my eye corner going down at a 45 degree angle like a forward slash. Is the concealing the same as here for that?

BritGirlJay mine are the same! they make the inner corners and the sides of my nose look "pitted". it looks like this * /|\ * if that makes sense? (the *'s are the eyes and the | is the bridge of the nose). I can't find any concealer that covers it. at least one that isn't too thick or too wet/creamy.

Thank you, Wayne! Before I started my struggle with Rosacea, I had extreme dark eye circles. I remember vividly walking home in second grade and having a concerned adult stop me and ask how I got my black eyes. Nature and genetics! Before I had only head the issue referred to as extreme dark circles, but yes, it stains the lid, and now its almost developing its own upper last eye liner. Thanks for the new terminology and a great video, I am going to take some of these ideas and run with it!

It does. The model's face looks terribly cakey too. And she doesn't even have circles that serious, not everything can be fixed by colour correcting. My eyes have horrible cavities underneath them and unless I put skincare patches there, they're visible and gross. If the lower lid is a bit prominent, though, it even looks cute IMO.

I am a former smoker (which in turn did a ton of aging to my skin) my eye skin is oily, and I have very deep set eyes. I have an issue with "Stained" lids... as well as loose skin under my eyes that always seems to create cracks or creases in my under eye makeup.... is there any way to stop that? I use a primers, try to go light/heavy/etc. with the makeup to stop it, but it never works....
