    I went through TBS June-December 92’. I’m also a real Nidan (2nd Degree) in Isshin Ryu karate. It took me fourteen years of hard training to earn this belt. It was quite like the feeling of high achievement when I graduated from OCS and TBS ETC. I’m not a fan of what they call MCMAP. The hand to hand combat training the Marine Corps started even back as far as 92’. But, there’s a huge difference between a traditional martial art system, such as the hard style Okinawan karate system in which I earned my 2nd degree and MCMAP. The stuff the MC trains is the same basic hand to hand stuff that the Marine Raiders trained in when FDR wanted his own commandos like the Brits had. The MC even hands out belts I’m told. There is a huge gulf between earning a belt in a true traditional martial arts system like mine (Isshin Ryu karate) and MCMAP. I’m not against them giving the Marines the training of course. It’s necessary. But even the instructors in many instances have not earned belts in recognized and traditional styles of martial arts. I think it sounds great, but it doesn’t make it legitimate. So, do the training but don’t offer belts. Back after WW2 when the MC set up bases on Okinawa, many Marines like the great Joe Lewis were allowed to train in legitimate traditional Okinawan karate system by Sensei’s who were trained in systems a couple hundred years old, like Shorin Ryu an Goju Ryu. My system was an amalgam of both. Many legendary Marines earned black belts in Isshin Ryu on Okinawa. My two Masters were personally trained by Grandmaster Uezu in Okinawa. Uezu was my system’s founders number one student. This is the kind of true lineage a true martial arts system requires to be legitimate. Today, I’ve never seen more fakes. So, train our Marines in lethal hand to hand (or empty hand as a karate man would say) combat, but all of the belt stuff is window dressing. Most Marines based in Okinawa or Japan can enroll in a true martial arts system. When Grandmaster Uezu trained my masters in Okinawa, they lived at his home and worked off their training fees. Very much what inspired the Karate Kid. But there is much truth to the story. So, for all of those Marines going into the FMF seek out a true martial arts system and take what you’ve learned at MCMAP and see how far you can get. True martial arts is a way of life. A way of harmonizing ones mind, body and spirit with one’s surroundings. Constant awareness much as would be required on the battlefield. There are no easy days in this way of life. Semper Fi

    MCMAP is 100000% more useful and applicable than any traditional martial arts system…. How many guys in the ufc do you see at the top with just a traditional martial arts system.

  • @ocsplc

    @ocsplc

    8 ай бұрын

    @@thesecretjuice Sir: you missed my point. My point was only that it is NOT a traditional “martial art” as that term has evolved for hundreds of years from the Far East. MCMAP and UFC are simply hybrids which borrow useful skills from all types of real martial arts but do not actually constitute one. Look, I’m a Marine and I don’t knock them training on the stuff. What I do mind is calling it a “martial art” and handing out belts. Unless the Sensei’s or Masters or Shihans handing them out are real then it’s just a gimmick to hand out belts. The Marine Raiders in 42’ trained up on judo and karate and didn’t call it MCMAP or hand out belts so why so emphatic?

  • @ocsplc

    @ocsplc

  • @ocsplc

    @@thesecretjuice perhaps, but again, that wasn’t my point. Don’t forget: I’ve done both. I started in MCMAP at the Basic School in 92’ before it was even called MCMAP. My point has nothing to do with whether it’s useful. Of course it damn is. I’m all for it. As a Marine I want my fellow Marines to be able to crack skulls in close combat. But it’s not a traditional “martial art “. It’s a program mixing many forms of traditional martial arts into techniques which are the most useful and likely to be needed. If you go back to my original point you’ll see I’m not saying don’t do MCMAP. But the idea of handing out belts and such isn’t serious. It may be a way of indicating one’s progress but traditional martial arts such as the Okinawan forms of hardstyle karate involve much much more time and effort to attain belt promotions, especially when one reaches their first black belt. MCMAP involves nowhere the amount of time and effort required for a traditional martial arts program. It’s not a matter of what’s better. And there’s no individual martial art that’s “better” than another. Ideally, one could do as many as possible but time wouldn’t permit it. And I’m not even getting into the kobudo weapons training side of traditional martial arts like the bo staff, the sai, the oar, and the most goes on. I don’t think MCMAP teaches this nor should it. So, don’t put words in my mouth. Since I’ve done both and know of what I speak, I’m not sure why you’re making this Strawman argument that I’m saying MCMAP isn’t useful. Yes it is, but it’s not a martial art and the belts being handed out are not usually being handed out by Masters and Shihans who’ve been training 30-40 years. I do know some Marine trainers in MCMAP do have advanced belts in real systems. In fact, after WW2, many Marines stationed on Okinawa became advanced black belts in the various Okinawan forms of karate such as Shorin Ryu, Goju Ryu, or my style Isshin Ryu. Joe Lewis was the best example. So, let’s not argue over a point that was never made man. I don’t think we actually disagree.

    OCS screens and evaluates Officer Candidates to see if they have the potential to serve as Marine Officers. It’s like a job interview. If you complete OCS, you can accept a commission as a Second Lieutenant. You then head to TBS to learn what you need to know as a Lieutenant (becoming a basically qualified rifle platoon commander) before going out to the Operating Forces.

    Sculpin - except for the PLC program (which occurs during the summers of junior and senior years of college) most Officer Candidates are 23 to 28 years old. If you can successfully complete a first class PFT you can complete OCS. I despise running more than a mile and was never pushed to my physical limit. In fact they rarely kick people out of OCS, it is purely a mental game in which they get quitters to quit. It’s also about timing, during expansion I saw prior enlisted discouraged from medical drops. Don’t get me wrong, if they see weakness they make your life extremely difficult. But apart from integrity violations, they even tell you that they don’t kick you out, they just facilitate your decision to DOR (drop on request). You would be amazed at some of the turds who make it through simply because they are tenacious and seem to have bulletproof egos. Some people just don’t get it when no one thinks they should make it. They end up administratively marginalized and eventually get kicked out sometime after training, but anytime I wondered if I was going to make it, I just looked at them and knew if they could do it, I was going to be just fine.
