The Barcode Pony, or: How To Actually Scan A Zebra
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
It began purely as a dad joke to embarrass my children in public, but to my great surprise, you can actually get a barcode scanning app to read a code from live Zebras!
Most of this is probably due to the forgiving nature of the scanning app, designed as it no doubt is, to be able to cope with distorted or wrinkled barcodes on product packaging, and thus accidentally seeing barcodes where none were printed. Electronic pareidolia, I suppose.
Here's the link to the Android barcode scanning app I used: play.google.com/store/apps/de...
Here's the page containing the image of zebras in my test:

Sorry Mike, you are not the first to think of this. A new system called StripeSpotter allows researchers to automatically catalogue and identify zebras based off their markings alone. Using a digital image of a zebra, the user defines an area on the zebra. From this, the software creates a “StripeString,” a sequence of white and black bands. Put enough of these strings together and you have a “StripeCode,” a unique identifier for each zebra, which is entered into a database. By comparing the ratio of white to black in the StripeCode, the system can differentiate between animals with great accuracy. StripeSpotter can also identify other animals that have pronounced patterns in few colors, such as giraffes and tigers.

Okay, totally off-topic thing I need to get off my chest: I really appreciate that despite everything, you've kept your channel sponsor-free. One of the reasons I moved away from linear television was my great dislike of adverts wasting my time. Over the past few years, they've moved to youtube and anybody who's anybody has sponsorship deals dumped throughout the video (sometimes multiple times). Many of my favourite channels have essentially been ruined by both that and the apparent growing need for inane clickbait. It's utterly tiresome. Thank you for staying true to yourself and understanding your audience. Keep doing weird stuff like scanning barcode ponies! Love your humour and style. ♥
@bosstowndynamics5488
Жыл бұрын
Fwiw KZread actually encourages these changes - Linus Tech Tips has done a number of videos looking at the behind the scenes details of KZread production and how videos perform with various design choices - non clickbaity videos just don't get watched consistently even by subscribers, and KZread Adsense doesn't really pay anything. Combine that with the fact that career KZreadrs are inherently going to have more time to make content and it's inevitable that the dominant forms of content will be sponsored (to enable a financially viable career in KZread) and clickbaity (to get enough audience to attract sponsors). Nice to appreciate hobby KZreadrs as well of course

@@bosstowndynamics5488 Yeah, I get that there's some algorithm at play and these days pretty much the only way to have a successful career in KZread is to become a slave to that algorithm's whims. Clickbait thumbnails and titles, with big eyes and red arrows, tend to have the opposite effect on me; I'm more likely not to watch if they're used. And sponsorships are just awful. Some saving graces are the new timeline and 'most played' features which help to find where the ads end. Sorry to be negative. However, I think I'm allowed to be disappointed that this place has changed so much, becoming so corporate and fake in the space of only a few years. Channels like Shrimp's give me some small hope that all is not yet lost.

It's true that KZread encourages creators to narrow down their content and exploit their niche, and do all sorts of clickbaity (and IMO, sort of desperate) things to attract and grow an audience etc. What is not so commonly discussed is that this is in general a great model for KZread (an audience engaged on a single specific topic is very easy to match for targeted ads), but it is in general a poor model for creators - it puts pressure on the creator to serve a paradoxical demand: specialise in one topic, but keep making fresh content. Some creators manage this. Many more burn brightly until they peak, then fall into sharp decline. This is not a great recipe for personal wellbeing - the stress of seeing success slip away from them may drive creators to try absurdly hard in rekindling the attention of an audience, to the extent that they start doing things that people shouldn't do - including things that are illegal or unethical, or just behaving in a way that is a caricature of themselves. Unfortunately KZread has no incentive to care very much about individuals - the model works well for them because there will always be a fresh batch of up and coming hopefuls to replace those that burn out.
Genuinely riveting content my mind was blown when you showed what the barcode scanner might be seeing with the stretched out black and white lines in the middle of the picture of zebras

The history of the barcode is a fascinating story. It's invention involved fingers in sand on the beach. The number of different barcode formats are VAST! "Joe Woodland said himself it sounded like a fairy tale: he had gotten the inspiration for what became the bar code while sitting on Miami Beach. He drew it with his fingers in the sand. What he was after was a code of some sort that could be printed on groceries and scanned so that supermarket checkout queues would move more quickly and stocktaking would be simplified."

the funny thing is, that one of the leading barcode app developers is called - wait for it - ZEBRA! :D Besides that, I am a software developer and regularly work with barcode, create barcodes, create software that reads barcodes and so on. You would be surprised, how many things are acceptable for barcodes. It mainly has to do with error-prevention. A lot of skewed and crooked results have to be accepted, as in reality barcodes will be damaged or partially hidden and so on.

@OgdenM

Someone above mentioned error correction which is why the scanner even gets damaged barcodes. It works really well in controlled situations like factories, grocery stores etc probably because most codes are multiple digits different and every code is pre-entered into the database so it knows what to expect. Ergo, your factory has 30 different items with different codes, the chances of them being 55-67-76, 55-67-77, 55-67-78 etc are very slim. It's much more likely that NONE of the segments of numbers repeat. So, you'd end up with 55-67-98, 45-24-53, 12-38-97. This means that ALL but 2 of the digits could be messed up and the database could be programmed to just assume that a "45" means 45-24-53. Or even a "52" meaning the same code etc etc. Heck, it could even just see the first and last digits and error correct. This is because barcodes are 100% one-offs within a given system and always refer to a specific item. IE: Bananas are always UPC (Universal Product Code) 4011 at every grocery store. (Organic is 94011). The same is for barcodes on ANYTHING. IDK if barcodes are ever reused after a product stops being made though.. it would make sense if we did. And Nancy's Honey Yogurt is UPC 043192102008. Also, there are different barcode generating systems. Ergo, "1234" generates a certain barcode in the UPC system and a totally different one in a different system. So, no finding something cheap with the same #'s with a NON UPC that as say, a phone and trying to use that barcode to buy it cheaply by scanning the wrong code. Of course it gets much more complex with larger systems with more things that have codes. But, the error correction is still the same, it just needs more data points to look at. IE: Mail with addresses. OCR now generates a barcode for EVERY piece of mail. The system has to look at SO many different pieces of info and piece them all together to error correct correctly. Ergo, the system has to know that there is no house with the number 4567 on NE 97th St, 97809 but that there IS a 4567 on NE 91st St, 97809 and generate the right code. --Woosh, I spent 40 mins typing this and doing research. It was a fascinating thing to learn.

Fun fact: While Zebra patterns do help against predators to some degree, the actual primary reason for the stripes is that it breaks the brains of tsetse flies, which happen to be a major vector for disease. Flies apparently don't like landing on the stripes and will instead bite another animal if nearby (or a zebra that has less/underdeveloped stripes)

This was actually more difficult than I thought. Evidently, the stripes on bees are not distinct enough to distinguish individuals.
