The two most soulful, tortured voices in the building that winters night left us with four minutes of pure magic!

Not to be a nit but it was Autumn, as the concert occurred on Thanksiving day , complete with full Thanksgiving dinner being served to the audience.
What a soulful voice Richard had
His performance shattered all my previous standards of value. This short performance told me everything I needed to know about what truly powerful music is, what real soul music is. Dr. John said in an interview that at this point, the other performers had gathered to the side of the stage and some of them were in tears, and I was no different!
If there is a heaven I'd like to think that concerts like this happen every day.
I've heard this rendition a thousand times or more yet it still stands as an astounding vocal performance from two of the greats. Whatever the DNA was that allowed such great artists to floursh in the past has sadly truly gone forever. But maybe someone, some day, will find it in themselves to exlpore and be inspired perform such as this ...

What a Heavenly duet! Morrisson and Manuel/Manuel and Morrisson: Amazing!
van will always be the man, but richard manuel's voice is the one we will hear when we get to heaven.

If I don't hear Van's voice in heaven I'm not going.
My favorite track from “The Last Waltz”
Reminds me of first time I saw Van live. This grumpy little guy comes out on stage, who looks like he just woke up from his afternoon nap, and perhaps 20-minutes too early. Then - BOOM! - this big voice comes out of him.
I can see that there wasn't room for this in The Last Waltz (you couldn't sacrifice "Caravan") but the look of sheer delight on Rick Danko's face at simple zaniness of this really would have been great to see in the Final Cut.
Knowing this performance has thrown a wrench in my life plan. When I first saw this video 10 years ago, I thought I would have no regrets if I died now.
Best moment of the night, bar none. Y'all should've been there.

I still had about 19 years before birth.. otherwise would've loved to be there.
EVERY TIME I have an extra glass of wine at home, I listen to this song. I love Van the Man. But I listen because of Richard Manuel. I read that the camera ran out of film during The Last Waltz. Not sure I believe that. If you like this rendition of this song, look for more Richard Manuel.

According to Robbie in his autobiography, Testimony, Martin Scorsese and the film crew knew that the Panavision 35 mm cameras had to be reloaded. They had to make choices in advance on when to reload the cameras. I don't know if it went exactly according to plan. Of course, there were multiple cameras, too.

unbelievable just unreal Van the Man
Beautiful beyond words. So blessed this is on film. Love it. ❤️🙏🎶
Damn I have heard this loads of times audio but never film and I swear it was Ray singing with Van like in one of those guest band things . I was fooled completely and I am a huge Ray fan and a proff musician ,just goes to show!!
it's the forgotten things that bring you back home. exquisite performance
I don't know if anybody else will "get" this or agree, but it's such a San Francisco moment. Winterland back then

OMG beautiful!
Van channels Louis Armstrong’s marvelous scat singing. Highlight of a magical performance. When The Last Waltz movie was in the theaters, I musta gone to see it 4-5 times. I still love it, and this tune and Caravan are stupendous.

Just love this version....especially today, on St. Patrick's Day!
Ray Donovan, always with the tunes.
Why in the F'in hell did Marty Scorsese cut this from The Last Waltz? We wuz robbed!
@shoutingthomas

Scorsese's main purpose was to keep the camera on his pal Robertson and make the whole thing about him. We hardly ever get a clear shot of Richard Manuel, who is marginalized in the movie.

they were probably restocking the camera with film, getting ready for van's caravan. its not like Scorsese wanted to cut some songs, but he physically couldn't film it all

At one point Scorsese lost all but one of the motors to the five (?) different cameras running!! LUCKILY (?) one camera was running when he was able to capture Muddy Waters's appearance!! He surely captured a true moment in (Rock/Blues) music history!!

Agreed, Steve. This one (at least) should have been included in the Director's Cut edition. Classic example of what Van can do with an ordinary song. Did same later with "Send In The Clowns"; made it a Blues standard.
It is fantastic

Que cancion tan Bonita y esa voz de Van Morrison increible -

Why wasn't this in the movie? It is wonderful!

Perhaps because Richard set the bar so high with his first note and then upstaged Van with his soaring vocals. Just notice how Van turns to Rick and Robbie but ignores Richard when the song ends.
Heavenly

I ♥this long.
Wow! Thnak you for this. Soulful is an understatement.

Amazing.
You can hear some nice piano flourishes from John Simon near the end, and how about Howard Johnson's tuba draggin' that bottom? They don't come across as clearly on the official mix.
¡Buenisimo!
Long live Van the Man. Agreed this should have been prominently featured in the film. The better audio recordings of the track reveal an audience hanging on his every inflection. No white man has ever sung like Van Morrison.

So agree
Richard manuel sembra Ray charles.
The drunkenness in Manuel's voice, real or not, carries over into the backing vocals. All in counterpoint to Van's soaring solo. Then Van went on to sing the second best performance of the whole night (we all know who #1 is). I wish they'd done "Belfast Cowboy," too.

Van is great. Richard is incredible. Did he get any appreciation for that? Not that I know of. No wonder he killed himself.

@francisslam1457

It's The Band keyboardist Richard Manuel, channeling some serious Ray Charles
This has to be one of Van’s weakest, poorest and rotten songs and it does him no favours especially when he and the Band absolutely knock ‘ Caravan ‘ out of the park
MAYBE...Irish babies heard drunks screaming this crapola over their cribs? The REAL version is by Bing Crosby. Lovely!
