The Backpacker Murders of Koh Tao. What really happened there?

We’ve all heard about the 2014 backpacker murders of two British tourists in Koh Tao, Thailand. Although Koh Tao is one of the most beautiful islands in Thailand, it has always been shrouded by a dark mystery. What really happened there? Tim Newton talks with Su Buchanan on her new upcoming book ‘The curse of the turtle’ which writes about some of the true stories behind the backpacker murders and the mystery surrounding this island.

I was in Kho Tao in 2012 ....... during my first holiday in Thailand.......... and I have NEVER gone back. Lesson: NEVER go out late night on a lonely beach.... alone, or with just 2 people. Fine,,,,, if it's a group of guys........ healthy guys, but never alone. ** Same for Hawaii ! I lived on the Big Island, and white tourists / visitors got attacked there, and you never got to see that in the news.

This: There is no real rule of law in Thailand. The law is subjective and dispensed at whim by whoever is adjudicating on the day. As a foreign tourist, or a Burmese at the bottom of the socio-economic spectrum, you've basically go no rights. Why? Because you lack wealth, influence and status. That is the basis of Thai law. That is why wealthy Thais are able to get away with murder. Once again, there is no real rule of law in Thailand. If you're a foreign tourist and you choose to get involved in illegal activities (drug use) you're leaving yourself open to the worst possible outcomes you could imagine.

sadly it is the same the world over, America and Britain included. Young poor and black in America you cannot afford a top lawyer or any lawyer for that matter. Russia is run by the mafia and the top Don is Putin, you can see what is unfolding there. This is a problem all throughout history. Our monarchy's history is littered with bloodshed... King Henry was a tyrant. It will never change.

Hi Pat, I'm David Miller's mother. Suzanne Buchanan was no help to me whatsoever, in fact she has been the opposite. I watched the recent documentary on all the deaths on Koh Tao and obviously David's murder was prominent. I find Suzanne Buchanan manipulative beyond belief. She tried to persuade me that David's murderers were innocent and when I didn't join in her views she resorted to accusing me of taking money! Because of that I know she is a liar. There are lots of accidents on this island because it is so vibrant with young people. But for her to write a book about these tragedies and to self proclaim that she knows something more than us is just wicked and morally corrupt. She is trying to give false hope whilst protesting about the innocence of both rapists and murderers....'her little boys". As a mother I think it is so important to stand up against bullies and she has proved to me that she is one.

Hi Pat, so sorry for your loss. It was initially & incorrectly believed that Ben was wearing a watch at the time of his terrible bike accident, and that this watch was missing / stolen thereby adding some credibility to the story he was robbed. Now that it transpires from your own son Mark who was on holiday with Ben that he never wore a watch. Mark has studied all the holiday photos, Ben is never seen wearing a watch. I quote your own son Mark in the Sky documentary Episode 3 of 3 at around 25 minutes, "there is no evidence/ nothing concrete / no facts to suggest anything else than an accident happened" and Pat in your own words when the interviewer told you there was no watch with the theory he was robbed you yourself said "Ive been going down the wrong road"

September 15, Date of murder. September 20, Y chromosome DNA tests identify DNA of 2 Asian men. October 1, They were arrested. October 2, They pleads guilty to murder claiming they turned on after seeing the victims making love. October 3, demonstrate at the crime scene with healthy appearance, not tired and sometimes smiled. - Scotland Yard officers already came to Thailand to inspect the investigation and never mentioned any false tests. The only thing that they concerned is that the crime scene might be confounded from the villagers who come by to see the crime scene.

    - But DNA results clearly show only DNAs from 2 Asian men, so there is no confounding. - In court, they claimed they were assaulting by the interpreter ----> The 1st defendant refused and was attacked by an interpreter and threatened that If not accepted, they will be attacked and killed and thrown in the middle of the sea. If accepting, they will be in prison for only 4 to 5 years. Later, the interpreter said that the 2nd defendant had been arrested and spoke to the 2nd defendant by phone. The 2nd defendant said that he was beaten to death ----> No convincible evidence was shown in the court anyway.

Just a few points as a retired senior detective. DNA - contamination is a real issue indeed and would certainly make it difficult to cross match evidence to a suspect, but when collected correctly it is indeed far more accurate and far more scientific than fingerprints. Fingerprints - for many years, I'd go as far as saying at least about 20 years, as a result of a case and trial in the UK, are no longer a matter of FACT, rather a matter of opinion, based on the level of expertise of the person doing the analysis and comparison. (One of the cases concerned a supposed fingerprint match at a crime scene to that of a female police officer. She was charged with perjury, later dismissed after an enquiry). In the case of the couple murdered on the beach, I think I got this from a tv program covering the case, that 'suggested' 'Thai mafia' involvement, and some cctv footage regarding movement of some key individual(s) close to the scene at or around the same time as the incident took place. Can't remember much more about it as it was some years ago.

The Thai authorities never let the facts (autopsy and DNA) keep them from creating their own self serving cause of death. The fact that they refuse to bring the red bull heir to justice only proves they can be paid off. That this author has an outstanding arrest warrant is disgusting. Everyone going to Thailand should keep this in mind and hope they don't run afoul of the Thai police. I can think of few countries with more corrupt authorities.

what really ramps it all up is that apparently one family "owns" the island and there is virtually no police presence (3, and rumor is they, like many are paid off or fear "reprecussions"). I've read that the island was virtually uninhabited even as recently as 1940s. Very curious. Could be made a government park, run by the gov for tourism. 13 guys have jumped to their death AT Suvarnabhumi Airport rather than go home. It's not impossible that a few of these deaths might be this, or just accidents. But the ones involving pretty young women does raise a few red flags. AND the Indian COUPLE that BOTH drowned in their pool? There is enough conflicting or NO evidence to make one wonder.

I still believe it was hype & myth creation, driven by other jealous authorities from other island & mainland jurisdictions. With convenient scape goats in two Burmese nationals. Koh Tao is a dive mecca with fabulous dive sites. Many dive operators from Samui etc. initially profited from Koh Tao's "Death Island" reputation. The real culprit/s left the island that night more than likely or is high in the food chain.

The world is not like your home country. Just as you would expect people to adapt a little when visiting or staying in your country, you should do the same when visiting other countries. One of the big problems I've seen personally in Thailand, mostly on the islands of Samui, Phangan (my home) and Tao, is that visitors are just plain rude. Rudeness, or being rude to Thai people, in Thailand can put you in real danger, real quick. So if you intend on visiting - wise up: understanding the culture and how to be polite and respectful in a country you're visiting is really the minimum if you're expecting the same in return. This is where the problems start most of the time. I live on Phangan in a Thai community. Best place I've ever lived. I have an open space downstairs where there's all sorts of things that people could try and steal and not once have I ever had a problem with a Thai person here. Foreigners, yes. Nearly every day. But Thais, no. Thailand is a wonderous place and the islands in particular still have a magic about them that's been drained from most places in the Western world. Come, tread lightly, pay even just the minimum of respect to locals and you'll find a paradise unlost. Nice reporting Thaiger. I just wish this has made it's way into the past by now. It's nearly been a decade after all... :\

@@terencebates6808 Of course it doesn’t. No one is suggesting that for one minute. I’m just giving my observations as someone who has lived next door to Koh Tao for many years. And maybe I know just a little more to the story than what’s reported. In fact, it’s the best unkept secret on the islands. Most people know who did it and why. And trust me, my point about respect and rudeness goes directly to the heart of how these things kick off. I didn’t make it that way. But that’s definitely the way it is. Take it or leave it. Sounds like you’re better off leaving it.

It seems that you are advertising a book that is making profit from others distress. This book will in no way provide any answers for any of the parents involved, but will just add to the controversies surrounding cases. I believe the perceived 'help' she thinks she is giving is only adding to parents distress. She is no expert, particularly not a DNA expert. As I am the mother of David Miller who was murdered by the two Myanmar men on Koh Tao in 2014, I think I have a right to dispute Suzanne Buchanan's beliefs about this case. The DNA is sound, it was from semen, which cannot be countered. The Myanmar are guilty as proved in court. Social Media is to blame for causing others to think otherwise and Suzanne Buchanan used her position as sole writer and editor for Samui Times to spread rumour and speculation.

I am a legal practitioner in Perth, Western Australia. I do not believe that Sue M has any legal training whatsoever. I have 30 years of academic training and practical experience of “expert evidence” and the rules of evidence. I have also attended courts in Thailand and noted that Thai courts do not follow the same careful rules of evidence that are observed by Western courts. I could tell as early as July 2015 when senior Thai police officers stated that they had “lost” or “used up” the original mixed semen sample supposedly found on Hannah that the prosecution case would be dismissed in a Western court in the first moments of a trial upon a submission of “no case to answer.” This is because the so-called DNA evidence would be inadmissible. There were multiple other glaring defects with the DNA evidence. Indeed, Jane Taupin the Melbourne forensic scientist and internationally respected expert in the field told me that the “DNA evidence” that the prosecution presented was “meaningless.” The reasons are far too extensive to outline in this comment. However, one should have faith in the observations of an expert in forensic science and a senior legal practitioner rather than the mere assertions of a lay person leaving a non-expert comment here.
