It never dawned on me how the only puberty talk us girls got was about menstruating and our boobs growing, but nothing about our own sexual feelings, or even the (sometimes negative) mental changes that come with menstruating or how stress impacts cycles. Or how debilitating menstruating *can* be. In regards to sexuality.. While our stuff isn’t “noticeable” like boys, I’m sure we can all agree it’s equally important. Especially when you factor in PH balances, which being sexually active can cause to be IMbalanced, yeast infections which can be life threatening if left untreated, on top of STIs and STDs. But nope. You’re (supposed to) bleed every month, and just work out if that little stomach cramp gets on your nerves/causes you to be bed ridden 🤷🏾‍♀️

Exactly. Also, people need to be taught that sometimes (based on various factors and health conditions) you might NEED birth control, regardless of sexual activity. Periods are not always healthy and good, not enough people know about PCOS or thyroid problems and chalk SEVERE PAIN up to "normal period cramps".

Oh God this.. I was in high school and actually had my mom drive me to urgent care for a “UTI” because sometimes when my crush was shirtless doing push-ups in gym, there was a ✨sensation✨that would occur along with what I called “unusual discharge” and “abdominal tension.” The doctor kinda looked at me for a second and said “Are.. Are you just feeling arousal?” and I flat-out told the doctor “No, I have a (word KZread will remove that means AFAB parts).” The look that that man gave me after that was.. Shameful. He gave me a huge lecture about how women also get hot and bothered, and that I could go to this list of websites that were all about sexual education for teens. Wish I had gotten to know about all that a little earlier in life so I didn’t have to make a fool of myself in Urgent Care, but what’s done is done, I suppose.

Now i had at that point peed with a boner so i raised my hand and said that it is in fact possible. And at this point she starts arguing and insisting that it is impossible. As a child of an immigrant, one thing I will say about those free samples is that I think they saved me from a lot of bullying. I'm mixed, and my mom, who is Asian, has never had to deal with the body odor and hair issues I have. I remember in 4th grade asking if I could have deodorant and she told me it would damage my skin and I should just use...baby powder. Thankfully the next year we had one of these assemblies and the girls got care packages with tampons, DEODORANT, and coupons for razors and acne products. Not to completely throw my mom under the bus--asides from her weird aversion to tampons she was really helpful when I did get my period--but I had to use New Years money to buy deodorant and acne spot treatments until I got my first job around 14, and when I started shaving in middle school I wore long pants at home for weeks to avoid the inevitable fight with my mom. So thank you to Secret, Venus, and Clearasil for helping me look halfway presentable during puberty.

AIDS was really scary in the 90's. I was in a middle school health class in '97-''98 and we learned all about HIV/AIDS. Included in this talk was the message that you shouldn't check for change in pay phones (which was a thing you did when there were pay phones) because addicts with AIDS would stick used needles in them to try and get someone infected with AIDS. I don't know how the needle would get in there and still allow it to open, but that scared me. He followed it up with always checking your seat at the movie theater because addicts with AIDS would leave used needles there that would prick you when you sat down. I have no idea where these ideas came from. It made going to the movies a lot more stressful during middle school. Do they still teach about HIV/AIDS in health class today?

I had my first period on the first day of seventh grade. My last class was science, and I asked the teacher if I could go to the bathroom. He let me go and I can still remember that dread that washed over me when I saw the blood on my underwear. It wasn’t the sight of the blood that scared me. It was the going home and telling my mom that scared me. Because it meant I was going to get the “You’re not a little kid anymore” talk my sister had just a couple months before. I’m an identical twin and my sister (older than me by two minutes) was the first to endure the wrath of the period. We were swimming at my aunt’s house when she noticed blood on her bathing suit and asked my mom what it was. I was so scared for my sister and knew that my day was coming too. We were terrified of periods because all the women on my mom’s side of the family had horror stories about accidents in class and the severe pain. Of course, we followed the family tradition and suffered from atrocious accidents. The accidents became so frequent that I had to have a doctors note saying that no teacher could refuse any request made to go to the bathroom (even during tests). My twin and I were bullied all through school, and having noticeable accidents every month during middle school did not help our case. Thank the Lord my periods are nowhere near as bad now that I’m in my 30’s, but they still suck.

Primary school sex ed in the UK for me was just a general understanding of how babies are traditionally made and the anatomy. Secondary school was learning to put a condom on (girls school, they didnt want any of us running round preggers lol), and they also made us comfortable about talking about sex by literally forcing ALL of us to say various sexual terms individually til we didn't giggle or react. And then hilariously we had a sex slang last woman standing competition. I really liked sex ed in my schools 🤣 I think it helped me approach sex a little more maturely because it wasn't a taboo and I knew it was okay if I just did it safely.

In Indiana, or at least the part I live, in we have this abstinence program called truth talks. Now I have a lot of weird ass memories from that class, but the thing that I remember the most was when someone asked the person teaching the class how gay people have sex, and he said “well they don’t, they just touch each other and try to arouse each other.” Keep in mind this man was teaching a sex Ed class to a bunch of middle schoolers in the late 2010s. Also kind of irresponsible now that I think about it because if you tell a bunch of kids that gay people having sex isn’t sex, then I feel like it would be kinda easy to put the connection in their head that you can’t gets STDs and stuff from gay sex, since they didn’t explain how STDs transfer other than “sex”. Just so painfully heteronormative I hate it.

I don’t understand it. It is preventable through education. In Canada we learned about everything including birth control options in grade 7 & 8. Then I went to Catholic high school and they just taught the anatomy. I had to teach my friends. We had a lot of pregnancies. But the public high schools didn’t.That was in the 80’s. From Ireland. Sex ed in my rural catholic primary school was honestly awful-abstinence only, don't have sex until you're married, masturbation isn't a thing and gay people don't exist. I only learned about concepts like the LGBT community as a teenager. In secondary school I asked the SPHE teacher how gay people had sex when we were discussing relationships and sexual health, and she told me it was an "adult topic"... honestly I wish we were shown informative videos like these, that were concise and to-the-point that actually addressed these issues. Sometimes I wonder if this country is stuck in the 70s.

She taught comprehensive sex education to us- including using birth control. She sent out permission slips detailing sex Ed and the curriculum to all 800+ students in the school and got exactly ONE parent request their student be excused (a request that was easily accommodated). Turns out, though, that the parents weren’t paying attention to what they were signing, and when their students told them what they learned, they hauled my mom up in front of the entire PTA with five minutes’ notice to defend her entire curriculum (my brother and me in tow since she was literally told “you have to come to this meeting right now” and couldn’t find someone to watch us). She stood firm in her beliefs.

The captions, however, are horrendous. they read like someone copy-pasted the script into the captions bar. maybe they spent all their money on the AD XD

When I was in high school, we had sex ed when I was in the fourth grade, and it was entirely clinical. We learned the names of body parts and that was about it. The next time I had sex ed was senior year, and the entirety of the program, which took a few days to get through, was about abstinence. There was nothing in there about safe sex practices, or forming healthy relationships, or the importance of consent, or anything like that. There was absolutely zero nuance, no helpful information, and even some outright lies. For example, at one point they told us that the HIV virus is so small that it can easily pass through the wall of a condom. They told us that sperm cells are so small that they often pass straight through condoms. They straight up told us "Don't use condoms, because they do not work. Instead, just don't have sex." And all of their "advice" was geared strictly towards heterosexual sex. Now, at this point I had already come out as gay, so people in my class new that a lot of what they were saying didn't apply to me. A friend of mine at one point took the initiative to ask "What about gay sex?" The instructor visibly paled and said "We're not allowed to talk about that." And we just moved on. Shit was wild.

European here. We had two classes of sex ed. One in elementary school, where the basics were explained (what's sex, masturbation, etc. and how puberty works). The other one in middle school where it was more about the real world (how to draw boundaries in a relationship, ie. don't have sex if you're not prepared, STIs). What I still remember is how the general knowledge part was given to both boys and girls but then we were separated, so we could ask embarrassing questions without judgement. Honestly, I had ZERO sex ed. Literally the only thing I got at my school was, in 5th grade (catholic or christian, can't remember) in ohio, was just: Some lady came into our math class. She rolled in a TV on one of those cards. HECK YEAH! You knew it was gonna be a good time when the teacher wheels in a TV. Oh... The teacher has an assistant... She's... asking all the girls to leave the room and go to another room... Okay... Uh oh. It's... /the talk/. Well. All "the talk" was for me, was just watching a really stupid advertisement about how your body changes to get acne, you start to smell, armpits sweat, get nervous around girls, etc... Just about two guys wishing girls knew about them, but then "after putting on (product placement here) deodorant, I've become more confident in talking to girls!" Then the teacher shoed us out of the classroom to go back to homeroom, and on the way out she held a basket with tons of mini deodorants (the cheap kind), which I can only assume was the brand in the ad. That's it. That's all I got. Until 7th grade science class 2 years later, when the teacher starts talking about genes, male/female characteristic, punnette square, all that jazz, and the boys and girls were giggling all mischeviously. I never knew why. I knew it had to do with reproduction, but, I didn't know the details. It took me until two years LATER (in highschool freshman year) that I had to GOOGLE BY MYSELF and learn via porn, put the pieces together, and finally figure out myself what it all meant. I felt like a genius, but I felt so left out.

I went to a Christian middle school where a lady yelled at us and said we would go to hell if we did oral, and then at the art high school I went to we had a representative from planned parenthood give us a thorough comprehensive education about sex, anatomy, and safety and there was a HUGE emphasis on consent and inclusivity. Afterwards she handed out free condoms and dental dams and offered to speak with people after class who were too shy to ask questions in front of everyone. So you could say I had drastically different experiences with sex ed

Wow, that last story was so refreshing, in what state, year and grade was this? They didn't teach us about consent until my last year of high school in 2017, and even then it was quite superficial, hetero and one-sided, it was basically taught as something that guys requested and girls could reject or accept like "guys don't obligate a girl to do something they don't want to do" and stuff like that. My teacher, albeit kinda an open minded christian woman who taught us about protection and birth control, still thought the solution to teen pregnancy was abstinence

My parents gave me a little collection of books so they didn't have to talk to me about it. It worked pretty well, actually.

My mom gave me a puberty book for girls when I was 10, but the book never defined what a period was. It did give me a graphic step-by-step guide on how to insert a tampon, though.
