It's funny because the director was accused of a bunch of things yet this movie (along with one of the later ones, which I wont mention because of spoilers) portrays Scarlett Johannsson/Natasha extremely well, especially as a woman. She holds her own, her team has so much confidence in her that they are not worried about her performance or her dying, she plays an extremely important role in moving the plot forward, she is very smart yet has some flaws, and she plays the "feme fatal" as a persona/guise and NOT as a cliché, etc., etc..

They did a great job of working in two tropes from the comics, in practically the same sequence. First, Cap fighting on heroically, even though he's way outmatched (as with Loki here), and then Tony's IMO ridiculous belief that he can take Thor. Nice shoutouts.

I think that might’ve been 2010; because that would’ve been where Marvel was talking about the success of Iron Man 2 earlier that summer; they were promoting Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger coming out next year in 2011; and then they started talking about The Avengers for 2012. That’s where Samuel L. Jackson introduced the cast: Clark Gregg (Ageht Coulson), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America); then Robert Downey Jr. takes over and introduced the new cast members: Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), and Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), and then brings out their director, Joss Whedon.

So there are a few differences from the comics one of these being the rosters The original Earth-616 founding members were Iron Man, Antman, Wasp, Thor, and Hulk. Captain America was discovered 4 issues later so he wasn’t originally apart of the first Avengers battle but did join them right after he was found. Hawkeye and Black Widow were actually villains at the point in the comics so they of course couldn’t be members of the team but did join the Avengers later on. In the MCU roster we have Iron Man, Cap, Thor, and Hulk just like the comics but unfortunately no Antman or Wasp. Hawkeye and Black Widow filled in for these two. Loki in the comics was also the reason the Avengers formed acting as their first villain. This is the same for the MCU with the only difference being the events themselves as I’m pretty sure in the comics Loki was attacking a Bridge in New York.

@@PhilBagels No, Hank is Ant-Man in Avengers #1. He adopts the Giant-Man ID in his own book (Tales to Astonish) between #1 and #2. And Loki tricks the Hulk into destroying a bridge in the Southwest because he wants Thor to go fight the Hulk, so Loki can escape the prison island that Odin sent him to before Thor finds out. Loki diverts the distress call about the Hulk so Thor (in NYC at the time) can hear it, but Iron Man and Ant-Man/Wasp also hear it, which is how they all ended up in New Mexico together. (The setting of large parts of "Thor" in New Mexico is a shout-out to this.)

There are so many great character moments in Avengers. I love the first conversation between Bruce and Steve where Bruce is clearly nervous about what people think of him and Steve is just a stand up guy reassuring him that he's not going to tear Banner down and he does it with one line. Similarly the revelation that Fury is the kind of person who will dip cards in his dead friend's blood if that's what he has to do to protect the planet is beautiful. Unlike the later Thor movies this one understands how to use Thor in comedy with the "he's adopted" line. Thor not even thinking of talking and instead just grabbing Loki because Thor is a god and he's pretty arrogant and not really thinking he needs to ask. Natasha's terror when Bruce yells at her in India because she's doubtlessly aware the Hulk can tear her to bits, even though she was completely calm dismantling the Russian group in the previous scene of hers. The movie gets the characters and respects all of them...except hawkeye, but hawkeye is just dumb so that's fine.

Great Reaction! I like that you understood Loki's scepter was agitating the Avengers. I also like that you recognized Coulson's weapon to have a similar energy signature to the Destroyer from "Thor". IMO, this movie is one of the MCU's best. It follows the Stan Lee spirit of story telling where every hero shines in their role. None of them are treated as a side character used for cheap laughs. Each member still has their own story, but now it's a thread in the tapestry of the rest of the saga. Each member had their share of camera time and dialogue, but none of it was forced. It was all organic and fed the plot. That's difficult to do with 7 leads and 4 secondary characters.

All the movies from when Tony first donned his suit, from Banner becoming the Hulk, to when Thor sent to Earth to learn to be worthy, and from when Steve came out of the ice all has been leading this of the original 6 Avengers uniting to save the world. While it was a superhero action movie they also balanced a lot of the arcs of the other characters, Thor wanting to take Loki and the Tesseact as to save Earth from another mistake of Asgard, Tony just trying his best to keep the world safe best he can saving the world and doing humane work balancing both his lives as as superhero and as a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, Banner just wanting to stay away from causing damage as possible until be roped against his will into this mess, and Steve lost in a world he doesn’t understand as a soldier the only thing he has is the next fight on his hand. Natasha and Clint even got some character depth while those two have mostly been supporting characters at this point but you learn more about what makes them tick Natasha is trying to redeem herself for her past sins as an assassin for hire and the one person to believe she could be capable of doing good was ironically the person who was ordered to kill her. The character moments were also well done from Thor and Tony going at it until Steve calmed them down, to Tony and Bruce being science bros, to the differences and hostility between Steve and Tony while they didn’t know each other personally they know each other by reputation and the fact they have history with Howard Stark despite their differences Steve and Tony come to appreciate one another Steve sees Tony is willing to make sacrifice play like when he threw the nuke into space and Tony saw Steve as a true leader. And all of this happens thanks to a humble SHIELD Agent named Phillip J Coulson. Fury may have brought them together but the Avengers truly formed because of Phil’s belief in them. As for Loki him getting wrecked by Hulk had such a cultural impact at the time.

Someone else pointed this out but basically every movie we see Ironman improve his suit against the foes he fought in the previous movie. That’s why he could take Thors lightning, he had improved his suit against electricity from his fight against whiplash in Ironman 2. This happens again and again.

I love how Marvel confirmed the fan theory that Loki was also being influenced/ controlled by the Scepter during this film (which is why he looked disheveled and sickly). The Scepter doesn't *just* mind control those it touches, it's also able to influence the person holding it - Thanos used it to control Loki.

All these years later, it’s still amazing that A. They pulled this off and B. It’s as good as it is. This seemed like the biggest gamble when they started building towards it and yet it’s one of the best MCU movies full stop. There are a ton of great, well-known moments in the film, but one that seems to be under-appreciated is the part where Tony is hamming it up on the bridge of the helicarrier ("How does Fury see these? He turns? Sounds exhausting.") What is great about it is that all the SHIELD agents in there, _including Black Widow,_ are so distracted by his antics that they completely miss him sticking his little hacking bug onto the computer. He totally plays all of them, there is far more to Tony than just his machines. Also if you like the Avengers, I _strongly_ recommend the cartoon series _Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes_ followed by _Avengers Assemble._

Glad you got around to this one, and loved the reaction - can probably say that I've never had a more fun experience (or laughed harder) at the cinema than when I watched this movie ten years ago. Regarding your last point about S.H.I.E.L.D., I know it's a fair undertaking, but you should watch the series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., even if you do it concurrently with watching the films - it's seven seasons long, but most MCU fans still regard it as the best Marvel TV series (even with the new ones coming out recently), and I feel like you would fall in love with the show and many of its characters (including one you're already pretty familiar with by now); even better if you decided to film your reactions so that we can watch you fall in love with them. One of the "don't think, just go with it" moments, is how the Avengers were able to communicate with each other during the battle on the Helicarrier and during the final battle in the city, since it was never established they had hooked up an internal communication system with each other that enabled Cap Natasha, Clint, and Iron Man to talk with each other. and the whole "central hive" thing has tot to be the second-most used cop out for Hollywood writers who don't want, or can't think of, a way to wrap things up (Right, star wars?). For arguably the most commonly-used crutch, you will have to wait until the end of the Marvel Phase Two narrative.

  • @CaptainFrost32

Cap's uniform had been updated with Coulson's input, Iron Man has full range sensors and communications (even tapped into the Quinjet speakers in Germany), and Natasha and Clint were using SHIELD SOP comms. There is no great mystery. The central hive aspect was used because of time constraints. Pure and simple. If it were in the comics, it would set up continuing story arcs with renegades and more. If the television side had worked together more with the movie studio, you could have done expanded story arcs that tied together more like Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter than the series on streaming services beyond NetFlix. [Daredeveil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Punisher were the top 4 of the NetFlix crop.]
