The Aurora Borealis, Fairbanks Alaska, March 2016
I've been fortunate the past 6 months to have traveled twice to the arctic (previously to Norway in September '15) to witness the aurora borealis amongst the most pristine skies and surroundings. At a latitude of 65 degrees north Fairbanks sits directly under the aurora belt, making it possible to see the aurora on most clear nights.
On the night of my arrival (March 6th), not only were the skies clear but a 'small' coronal hole (and potentially a stealth CME) directly faced our planet and produced a G3/Kp6+ storm. The aurora danced across the skies in all its formations and array of colours putting on quite a show... Greens, purples and reds were all visible with naked eye.
I photographed somewhere in the vicinity of 2000+ photos during my stay at Fairbanks. This timelapse is a handful of what I consider to be the most memorable moments during those cold but beautiful nights :).
Notes:
Most of the photographs were taken in and around the 'Mountain Aurora Lodge', a fantastic lodge I'd recommend if you're looking for that homey Alaskan feel :) .

MashaAllah, you had beautiful clear skies during your trips. I have been 3 times to the Artics Rovaniemi , Ivalo and last week in Tromso to catch these lights. With the total of 16 nights I only managed to watch 2 quality and 4 partial cloudy skies. The rest are all total cover. On my last trip to Tromso from 5th april to 8 April brought along my Sony A7S but my fast lens was not working. Settled for an F4 16mm. InshaAllah will comeback again to see the beauty of Allah SWT creation.

Salams you're very lucky to travel to the arctic 3 times :) It's unfortunate that there's no guarantee you will see the northern lights with both our terrastrial weather and space weather to compete with, but it's all part of the fun. Besides Tromso is so beautiful we need an excuse to go back :) Inshallah you get to see it on your next trip.

Going to fairbanks agains in january 2018! Is that good time to see the lights?

Average Joe Hi there! It really depends on solar activity at the time, but your odds are greater in January because of the long polar nights. It will be cold though! Also best bet is to stay as long as possible. The aurora is visible on most clear nights, however there is a massive difference between a weak and strong show! Best of luck :)

+Mohammed Ali Baddah i love cold weather i have camped out in the winter numerous times with shorts down here in california in lake tahoe and big bear in the winter!! I am gonna camp out in the woods and some car camp when i go up there this January coming up!! Also what happens if i dont plug the car at night in the -40 weather?

While it gets quite cold in California and Lake Tahoe, I wouldn't risk camping outside in Alaska during the winter season unless you really know what you're doing. As beautiful as the aurora is it isn't worth risking your life. As for plugging car in best to ask the locals but my understanding is to warm up your engine block for those really cold and long nights. Remember to post up images/videos when you go :D
