The Atrax

Ғылым және технология

The Atrax is a 3 DOF Australian Funnel Web Spider inspired robot, that is mainly wooden made. The parts are cut from a 3 mm plywood plate with a Dremel saw. 27 servos are dispatched as follows: 24 for legs, 2 for fangs and 1 for the abdomen.
Everything else (servos, erectors, electronics, ..) are supplied by Lynxmotion.
3 different real walking patterns are implemented:
- Scorpion (4231 seq.)
- Tarantula (4132 seq.) quite slow gait in the real life
- Metachronal (4231 seq.) common for running spiders, ticks, lobsters and crabs

The walking is like a chain almost. One leg moves back, the other does the same. The 2 second legs moves closest to the first leg that moved, other side repeats, So on and so forth. Amazing to watch!

Thank you for uploading this - I've been trying to get my head around some of the gaits for octopeds recently (especially turning) and your video shows them very clearly. Seriously impressed with how well this has been put together indeed. BTW, the mandibles and LED 'eyes' are a very nice touch :-) Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your nice comment! But don't worry: that's not the first shot I tried! The most difficutly was that the legs tips (on tars) held often catched by the carpet! ;-) McSpider

Any plans on building toys or perhaps some other practical device based on this design? Have you thought of working for a SFX company that makes film/television props, or opening your own shop? Once again, astounding! Keep up the good work!

That's probably because in the videos they've shown the robot IS learning to walk. The videos are of Boston Dynamics testing the robot over different surfaces so that they can improve its motion.
