Sand Flea Jumping Robot

Ғылым және технология

Sand Flea is an 11-lb robot with one trick up its sleeve: Normally it drives like an RC car, but when it needs to it can jump 30 feet into the air. An onboard stabilization system keeps it oriented during flight to improve the view from the video uplink and to control landings. Current development of Sand Flea is funded by the The US Army's Rapid Equipping Force. For more information visit www.BostonDynamics.com.

    kir ra. Too expensive and complicated? You realize there are missiles used that cost more than a million dollars to use once? We have planes that can shoot a precise laser at a missile head to disarm it too. A bomb on a small robot is not expensive, and not complicated to the relevant extent.

    @@iloveeveryone8611 it is when you compare it to a nuke vs regular bombs vs missiles. bombs are cheap. metal casing to hold tnt, tail wings, a noise cone with basically a raspberry pi in it ( only for tomahawk style missiles ) for regular bombs for like b52's just a gps in the noise cone and most of these use simple triggers ( bunker busters have programmable triggers for depth )

  • @sn0wchyld

    @sn0wchyld

    ***** unlikely that its _possible_, rather than much less practical. the whole reason its possible to make something jump that high is (in part) because it is small and light. if it was double the size, it would weigh roughly 8 times as much, all else being equal. scaled to a car size, is what, 8x the current size? that's 512 times the weight. granted, not everything is going to scale linearly with size. the camera on the front for instance wouldn't get any larger with a larger robot - but the point remains that the weight and thus forces involved in jumping like that increase at an exponential rate vs the actual size of the robot. Hence, 'there's a reason elephants look the way they do'.

    My guess is its packed with a dense foam or silicone rated to keep the internals from jarring upon impact. My question is what method is used for launch? No room for hydraulic pump to run pistons with that much throw. No noise of air compressor for pneumatics. Is it possible to engineer silonide bodies for that much throw? Must be a calculated spring release function. Clock spring? Coil? Interesting... How many uses before the spring steel weakens past the brain box's caulcualational capabilities?

    +TheBenchmarkBrothers This explains why Valve won't release Half Life 3. The gvmt was legitimately terrified at the notion of headcrabs, so in their zeal to weaponize everything they decided to make a robotic headcrab. Valve, anticipating this put robotic headcrabs in half life 3, and when the gvmt heard about it they decided to stop valve from finishing and releasing the game. They don't want their new secret weapon exposed. Especially if that exposure teaches people how to fight them.
