A true Australian classic which will never die. Also which defines the Australian spirit and culture I vote this song to be the next Australian anthem. Long live the Atlantics

This remains as one of Australia's best ever instrumentals. A remarkable effort after 45 years. Jim (Skiathitis) on lead still has it along with Peter Hood on drums, Martin Cilia, guitar and Michael Smith, bass. The Strat still sounds great and has clearly done some travelling in its' time. Thank you mandyp for posting.

It'll be on the charts when Tarrentino discovers it and puts it in a movie. I just got a copy of The Atlantic complete CBS recordings, Vol. one. Great music!

Recording this version of Bombora hadn’t actually officially been on the brief as I had understood it when, just a week before, I’d been invited to join The Atlantics, replacing original bass player Bosco Bosanac, who was going off to play the part of The Man In Black, Johnny Cash, in a duo with his wife. Saturday 13 May 2006, I’d fronted up to drummer Peter Hood’s home, which also houses the original band’s rehearsal/recording studio in the Sydney suburb of Earlwood, fingers raw from learning the five new tracks we were to contribute to Delightful Rain: A Celebration of Australian Surf Music, conceived by the always enthusiastic David Minear of the Adelaide-based independent record label Bombora Creative, with producer Kerryn Tolhurst (The Dingoes) and recording engineer Mick Wordley. Bumping into Freshwater Surf Club on Sydney’s North Beaches Sunday 14 for a further day of rehearsal, arranging (we had a bit of bother with the bridge in Riff A Go Go that I eventually helped solve a little) and soundchecking (Wordley was still setting up the recording equipment), our contributions to the CD that would ultimately include new recordings by Australian acts from across 40 years of surf music, from Les Green of The Denvermen, through Tamam Shud, Richard Clapton, The Celibate Rifles and more to the new young gun, Beau Young, were recorded the next day. At the end of that day, David suggested we have a look at perhaps giving the Midnight Oil instrumental, Wedding Cake Island, the Atlantics treatment, and so that evening after dinner back at the hotel, we worked a version up and recorded it Tuesday 15, which is when David wondered if we might do him a version of Bombora too. After all, it was the track, a #1 hit back in 1963, which had inspired him enough to name his company in its honour. So, pretty exhausted after nearly four days of intensive rehearsing and recording, we ran through it a couple of times, and that’s what you have here. Only two of the five new tunes we rehearsed ended up on the CD, alongside Wedding Cake Island and Bombora, but you can see/hear them on the DVD David released a year or so later, Live At Freshwater. It’s wonderful that so many of you have checked out the clip on KZread. It would have been even more wonderful if even half as many of you had checked into the Bombora Creative website and ordered a copy of what is a truly unique slice of Australian music history. That might have allowed David and the Bombora Creative team to do another album like it, ten years on, celebrating 50 years of Australian surf guitar music. You still can of course. You might be getting this wonderful music free right here on KZread, but it costs a whole lot of money to write, arrange, rehearse, record, mix, master and manufacture it. Anyway, sit back and enjoy a truly magical time in my life, when, just for a moment, I was an Atlantic.

WOW! Such an awesome story behind the recording! The minute I got the CD, just after release, it was on repeat for months! The revelation for me was Taman Shud and the story behind the name of the band. I was also impressed with The Rifles. Being a fan of theirs for years, was great to hear their contribution I have watched the DVD many times and love it. The back stories and bits of conversation are great! Thanks to you Michael for sharing and for playing on what is one of my all time records!

There was an American surf rock song also called Bombora by a band who called themselves the Surfaris, though they were not the same Surfaris that did "Wipe Out." I've never heard The Atlantics version unitl now. Very cool. Sounds a lot like The Shadows.

A reverberation, or reverb, is created when a sound is produced in an enclosed space causing a large number of echoes to build up and then slowly decay as the sound diminishes. Guitar effect reverb is an electronic recreation of the enclosed space. I'd say we are even..cheers

the early 60's look was way better. The beach boys, The Atlantics, they all went to trash in the looks during the late 60's to the present.
