The Atari 400 Returns - This Week In Retro 154

Ғылым және технология

Classic Sega arcade games have been ranked, do we agree? The next mini console will be the Atari 400 (not technically a console) and a PlayStation console is brutally forced into a SNES case....its awesome fun.
All this plus a look at other retro gaming news and our Community Question Of The Week.
We are sponsored by Pixel Addict magazine. The latest issue features an in depth look at the Connection Machine, an incredible learning computer. It's a really stunner too. Take a look at www.pixel.addict.media/ for all the details.

All the minis seem to be missing a composite out for crt gamers. I'd like to also see an audio jack in for running cassette games through emulation (if that would work). The Atari 8 bits were an important step in launching Poland's gaming scene, one of the first games being Robbo from 1989 (check that one out)

Tatsumi is the only other company in the '80s that was comparable to Sega for a range of big impressive super scaler type arcade games, they made Buggy Boy, Space Harrier and Afterburner type games, and a very impressive 3-screen driving game in 1983 called TX-1 (first ever game to have force feeedback steering so I read), which I do remember seeing in UK arcades.

At 59:23 , my theory is still that it was the Nintendo Wii that made gaming more accepted, casual and popular. When it just came out so many people who never played video games started buying one with all the funny and quirky accessories. It proved to be a good social alternative compared to like board games. I think it's still one of the best consoles ever made relatively speaking.

Yes I think retro memories can be very personal. As kids 2 friends who lived in the same street as myself had an Atari 800 and 400 (I had a ZX Spectrum as did most of my friends). So I was very aware of the Jay Miner magic those computers had, and so the original 800 (with it's impressive keyboard) is part of my retro computer collection...As for Sega, it's quite strange to me that Microsoft has a games console and Sega doesn't given their past in arcade and home console history.

My home computer path: ZX-80 kit, VIC-20, Atari 400 (heavily modified over time via magazine articles), Atari 800XL (memory expanded via magazine article), Atari 1040 STf with Atari color monitor (wanted an Amiga 1000, but it was too expensive), Commodore PC III with color monitor (incredible, mint condition $300 open box special at RAF Lakenheath USAF BX), from that point forward all home-built PCs starting with an Am386DX40 system. ALL were in MINT condition when I transitioned to the next machine and I have no idea what I did with them other than the 1040STf system which I gave to my next door neighbor for their kids (along with a 230/110VAC transformer) while stationed at RAF Mildenhall and living in beautiful Bury St. Edmunds.

Long time fan of the show. With the news of Chris leaving the show, I've gone back to see some of his early TWIR videos. I can honestly say Neil, Dave, & Chris each bring a unique perspective to the show. Losing Chris will be sad, & while he will be missed, I understand needing a little more head room. A lot goes into these shows, behind the scenes, especially in-terms of time & commitment. Best wishes Chris, and stop by the show as time allows.

I'm not a huge fan of the Mini machines, but if they release a Maxi version (800 for preference due to the keyboard) then I'll buy it. I bought their fullsize TheC64 and it's a nice bit of kit. In fact, if they release fullsize version of almost any of the 8-bit machines, I'll likely buy them

Another excellent show. I agree that the 8 bit Atari machines were overlooked in favour of the 'mighty trio' as they were in the UK. In the US however, it was very popular and some of the most celebrated games of the 1980s originated on the Atari 8 bit platform. Examples include Ballblazer and Bruce Lee. I would counter the view that the C64 was not a better machine, as its processor was slightly faster allowing for more dynamic games to be created for it. A good example of this is how the creator of Bruce Lee explained he was able to enhance the game on the C64 as it was a more capable machine; sorry Dave. I was disappointed that no mention was made on the Atari 5200 emulation that is included in the Atari 400 Mini. It is this I am the most excited for as I have no desire to import one of those machines. Finally I saw Dave described Baldur's Gate 3 being a single player game. While it is indeed an excellent game to play on one's own, you can also play it online as a co-op.

Tbh i cant see the Atari 400 mini selling well. Its had mixed reactions and people think its more aimed for an American audience as it was more popular over there than in Europe. I didnt even know it existed until this appeared, i was expecting Retro Games to do a ZX Spectrum mini

From what I heard they have bought someone else's moulds so it won't be as costly for them to make. Also 8 bit Atari had a massive following in the us and parts of Europe. I think it will do okay.

"I was bored by fighters within five minutes of Street Fighter II." Same. I had a little fun with SF2 and Mortal Kombat at some sleepovers, but that pretty much did it for me. Haven't really been interested in revisiting the genre since. Even Super Smash Brothers just seems like a video game version of two people repeatedly slapping each other. Fun for 30 seconds. Then I'm ready to move on to something that can hold my attention.

The A8 line is lovely indeed, but the hw is ill-fitted to port many of the C= 64 games that are customized to the Nth degree to its abilities. Things like 3D/isometric games or else cpu-bound are a natural for it though. More credit should be given to games that originate on the A8 though! (There are many fantastic C= 64 games that are ports from the A8.)

I had an 800XL with a disk drive back in the day. Apparently my brother 'lost' it when I was away at college! The 800XL was a good computer with quite a lot of good games, both from the UK and the US. For a good British made game I'd recommend Draconus from Zeppelin Games. Some of the first (Turbo Basic) games I wrote and compiled were for this, I still have the disks but nothing to play them on. Now if they released a 800XL Maxi it would definitely take it's place alongside my The C64 Maxi! 😀

This is a highly calculated release. They are aiming at the "Nostalgic" market(those who got a 400 as their first computer were far more than those who got an 800) and the Collector's market here in Europe (where Atari 8bit was a huge hit) and most of the fans have a huge gap in collections concerning the first generation models (400/800 and the 1200xl). The Atari community is the third most vibrant home-brew community (right behind Speccy) with many quality software and hardware upgrades released every year and the guys over Retrogames know that. Now here in Greece the asking price of 150euros (pre order) for a mini replica make no sense to an owner of 8 Atari 8bit machines.... no matter how bad I want an original model.

Have to say that I am pretty uninterested in paying £100 for a system similar enough to the C64, may throw some money when it's on a big sale. Another great thing about buying a C64 is the homebrew community is still running very healthily, where there are games on the Atari 8 Bit systems but they are comparatively much less common. This seems like a system for those with nostalgia only... which lets be honest is true for all of these systems but for this one seems particularly so.
