    I played X-Wing on my 386SX. Played through the whole campaign, but never managed to even complete the first tutorial level. The reason was the time-limit on the tutorial level which ran on the system-clock independently from the game's FPS. The game was running so slowly on the SX that it was impossible to beat the tutorial within the given time limit. 😅

    I'm sorry to see Chris is moving on. The very first time I watched a video on the 005Agima Channel, I knew that this man was a dedicated and passionate "keeper of the flame" of our hobby...a man that was totally genuine, and who didn't shy away from showing his emotion for what he loved.

  • @Pixelhorizon
    @Pixelhorizon4 ай бұрын

    I had to stop the video and write this... When Neil talks about not looking back, that he was always looking for the next thing... This is so true... At the time I had absolutely no nostalgia for the past games/systems, my eyes were always on what the future would bring. Now I can see the value of what was being created before our eyes and knowing the context I cherish it. I remember being confused/ frustrated about why some old arcade games couldn´t be ported to more recent machines after all they were more powerful systems and the games were awesome, but other than that my mind was always going forward... PS: The PC being an open platform regarding what the machine can have inside (CPU, RAM, etc) the ball could be kicked ahead and the consumers could run for it. The Amiga was a closed system and the developers had to take into account the base system. That happens even today in game development when the game is multi-platform.

    What a shame Chris is leaving the show but I think you are doing the right thing and I do hope you will be back on a somewhat regular basis ( maybe full time again some day ? ). You are a really talented presenter and you do genuinely come across as someone who would be fun to be around. I definitely need to "play more in 24". I've barely played anything since around 1996 but thanks to shows like this, I am slowly getting back into it. My daughter and I started recording us playing on her KZread channel and it's been great fun. We barely get a single view but she loves it. Especially as she is the expert and I am now the novice. I keep telling her I was good 30+ years ago but she does not believe me!

    The main reason I bought my original Amiga 2000 was the expandability. Hard drives, memory expansion, CD drive, AV, etc. PC emulation was on my to do list until I realized I could build a PC clone for close to what a bridgeboard would cost. In addition there were horror stories about configuring bridgeboards.

    I'm glad to hear about the interest in retro gaming. But it's a little amusing to me because I've never really "graduated" to much else. I was "class of 1984", which meant I grew up in the arcades with pinball, Pong, Space Invaders, Asteroids, Tempest, Pac-Man, Galaga, Donkey Kong and many others, as well as the Atari 2600. In the 90s, I eagerly snatched up Microsoft's licensed reproductions of many of those "golden era" titles (as well as pinball1). Then, around 2000 or so, I picked up all of the Jack's Games tv plugins versions and played them with my young daughter. Then MAME came onto the scene and it was practically an orgy of arcade riches. I bought a Wii for my daughter in 2006, but now it is my wife and I who still play that nearly two-decade old console, albeit on a 120" projector screen. I also did some PC gaming in the late 80s and 90s, things like Kings Quest, Warcraft and some Star Wars titles up to about Jedi Outcast (still a great title).

    I had an Amiga 1200, and pretty quickly got tired of disc swapping, so put in a hard drive. It was just as simple as stated, open case, plug in, and off you go. And with a 120 MB hard disc meant for a laptop, I had way more room than the dedicated Amiga drives on the market, and I put most of my games on (a lot of games got cracked for HD install that weren't possible otherwise) That bought me another 3 years before I surrendered and bought a PC in 1996. Gunship 2000 was my flight sim of choice, and just like Chris, I thought that was as complex and visually impressive enough to suggest a compromised X-Wing might have been possible on the Amiga.

    Retro gaming in 2024 will be great, as there are ever better ways to play old games while there are ever less new games to forward to. To me, new DCS planes/campaigns and perhaps the Switch 2 aside I have nothing on my wishlist for this year which is sad. All power to my retro handhelds!

    The condescending attitude especially by many women towards computer games persists into the 2020's. It is sad. Frankly, I do know where she is coming from. as a mother you are in the end responsible for your kid having some fruits and veggies now and then instead of 24/7 pizza which the probably like better. So I see where she is coming from. On the other hand she is NOT HIS mother and currently at work, in her job, as a journalist, who should do enough homework to realize the size of the achievement of a 13 year old being the first person in the whole world to finish a game that is almost 3 times his own age. Something probably a hundred million people or more have tried before and failed. Instead she erases her professionality by petty, matronizing, small horizon admonishing "now go outside and do something of actual worth." Because of cause as a mother she is THE leading expert on the planet on what children do and doesn't need to know anything more. Everytime something like this happens is a horrible, horrible setback for feminism. yes I am firing the big guns here. Yes I am dramatic. because I am SICK of it. Sick of the damage they do. Especially to women in STEM who fight hard enough to be even taken seriously.
