This is the recording of Professor Anthony Schapira’s presentation on 23rd February 2023 at the Royal School of Medicine London supported by Cure Parkinson's
After reviewing pre-clinical laboratory data from Professor Anthony Schapira’s team at UCL, a committee of experts brought together by Cure Parkinson’s, prioritised the simple cough medicine ambroxol for further investigation; agreeing that it has the potential to slow the progression of Parkinson’s.
This decision was based on the demonstration that ambroxol could improve the breakdown and clearance of waste proteins that build-up and clump together in brain cells - a characteristic feature of Parkinson’s. The UK-based phase 2 clinical trial of ambroxol in 17 people with Parkinson’s, was funded and supported by Cure Parkinson’s, Van Andel Institute and the John Black Charitable Foundation; and the results of that study, together with additional pre-clinical and clinical findings, support ambroxol and other drugs in this class of so-called GCase-modulators as a promising area of research to slow or stop the progression of Parkinson’s.
Now, the phase 3 trial of ambroxol called ‘ASPro - PD’ will begin, funded by Cure Parkinson’s alongside its strategic partners Van Andel Institute and the John Black Charitable Foundation, and by the Parkinson’s Virtual Biotech, the drug discovery and development arm of Parkinson’s UK. The trial, it is hoped, will determine if ambroxol can slow the progression of Parkinson’s.

Dose of Ambraxol in trial

The 186-day exposure period comprised 28 days of dose escalation, with each dose administered 3 times per day as follows: 60 mg (days 1-7), 120 mg (days 8-14), 180 mg (days 15-21), and 300 mg (days 22-28). This exposure period was followed by 158 days of administration of ambroxol at 1.26 g per day (420 mg 3 times per day). Patients were issued ambroxol therapy in 2 batches, 1 at baseline and 1 at 93 days. Ambroxol tablets were donated by PRO.MED.CS Praha a. s. (Prague, Czech Republic).
Can it potentially help advanced cases of PD?
i have had NO help in 9 yrs ii wil fly anywhere try ayything. i have bbeeeenn on waiting lisst for DBS nno action pleasee help!
