The artist residency available to us all with AMANDA GARDNER.
Before I get stuck into the description of this fantastic conversation...
Amanda has put together an insightful and stimulating At-Home Residency Infographic to get you started on your own at home artist residency journey if you are keen. You can get this here. amandaigardner.com/blog-archi...
In 2022 artist Amanda Gardner created and undertook her own ‘at-home’ artist residency in her studio in the rural township of Dayboro in Queensland, Australia.
I couldn’t wait to talk to her about it.
If you know me, I am deeply interested in all things artist residencies, having undertaken international artist residencies and regularly working with artists on their artist residency research and applications in The International Artist Program.
However, the 'at-home' artist residency model was new to me.
From my wide-ranging conversation with Amanda, I could see that it could offer a hell of a lot for artists and has given me a lot to consider in my own practice.
Focus, structure, direction, commitment, a project with a beginning, middle and end, PARAMETERS! These are things that many artists are searching for and in desperate need of in order to develop their work and ideas and go to their next level.
I dive in deep with Amanda and ask - What stimulated this idea? How did she plan for it and what kept her on track? What was her project? What did she create and did it surprise her? What were her outcomes? and much more. We also discussed her gorgeous studio, we get a brief tour! her property, her wider arts practice and why she works the way she does, with mindful consumption and minimalism at the forefront of her work.
What we cover in the conversation…
- A glimpse into Amanda’s studio in Dayboro and the bush generation on her property - so beautiful!
- How she discovered the art of collage.
- Her interest in conservation and how it directed her artistic approach.
- Mindful consumption, minimalism, and the choices we make.
- The spark for her at home artist residency.
- The difference between regular work in your studio and a residency project.
- Her actual project - creating an artist residency at home.
- Setting goals, managing time, and having an outcome. For Amanda it was a solo exhibition.
- We talk about FRESH EYES and the role of writing in her residency and greater practice.
- Amanda’s infographic - super helpful questions to consider for an at home artist residency.
- How the residency added a depth to her making.
- Amanda’s next exciting project and the collective she has founded, ArtLab.
- and much more..

About Amanda
Amanda Gardner lives and works in Dayboro, a small semi-rural town an hour’s drive north west of Brisbane, Queensland. Amanda uses found paper and other cast-off materials to understand how she might make compelling art using the practical application of design principles. Her work is process driven, dependent on the resources she discovers, the simple act of cut and paste, and the unhurried contemplation of the visual elements of a composition. Central to her practice is the mindful use of essential materials which are, where possible, non-toxic and bio-degradable.
She is committed to engaging with and supporting her community of local artists, bringing all sorts of projects to the region, from facilitating exhibitions and life drawing to creating spaces for artists to engage in critical conversations about their art and art making.
