    One of Sun Tzu's principle in Chinese version was 'to use the LEAST asset and resource to win a battle or to complete a mission', which is the opposite of the Western that is 'to inflict maximum damage possible to prevent opponent to recover'. This is a very HUGE difference.

    Stay calm, collected, humble, and don't ever act on emotion. This will drive your opponent nuts and they will threaten you with the weirdest, nuttiest threats which then expose their motive, their strategy and their character. Throw them off with kindness, use logic, be innocent and it will drive them even crazier. You will see every move they think they can make and you've not exposed anything about yourself because you're better than that, you don't want war in the first place and therefore you won't need it if you use this method. They will have taken themselves out.

    something I took from the art of war and boxing is the act of leaving an out for your opponent, in the art of war, he says, if you surround your enemy they will fight to the death, but if you leave them an out they will take the out. if you get the better of someone in a fight, and you jump on them they have nothing to lose and will go all out, the key is to get the better of them and keep your distance, keep tagging them, keep your composer, and they wont get brave and if they do they will miss since u are staying back.

    What an excellent explanation. As silly as it may sound, the first time I read the Art of War, I didn’t really understand it. Then I decided to watch a Chinese show called Three Kingdoms (based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms books, which are a romantic retelling of the Three Kingdoms period). Although the Art of War predates the Three Kingdoms era by 700 years, the context I gained from Three Kingdoms made the Art of War much more understandable and helped me appreciate its brilliance and after reading the Art of War I was able to appreciate Three Kingdoms more. They complemented each other perfectly.

    Hi AJ, Thank you for your thoughtful post. I love your dedication to understand this subject better. The more I learn about the Art of War, via books and discussions with Chinese friends and family, the more I understand that this is a topic that one can study for a life time. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is the perfect story to see the Art of War in action. Although it is a novel, the insights that it contains on the art of war are very valuable. My 2 favourite characters in that story are Zhuge Liang and Guan Yu. I briefly mention Guan Yu in another episode on Bold Books and Bones called: A Story in 8 books to tell Children about Spirituality kzread.info/dash/bejne/d2Z_l5eAnMK7kps.html If you are interested I have a second episode out on the Art of War. It is called: The 36 Stratagems (The Art of War Part 2) kzread.info/dash/bejne/i3ejpY-cYbm9gbA.html May I ask, where does your interest for The Art of War comes from? Same here! I’m reading it now and there are so many words that I don’t understand but as I take my time and understand them I begin to really understand. It if a lifetime of study so my plan after reading the Art of War is to go through the book again and dissect each point. This will take some time but I want it to be automatic when thinking about the Art of war ! I do this with every book and I really enjoy the conversations I have with people

    I enjoyed listening to your explanations, though haven't read "The Art of War", but you made it so clear. I would like to add to your elaborations that to the Chinese, Sun Tzu's teaching of 13 chapters is embodied in their daily lives, not only in wars but in martial arts, in social relationships, in conducting their livelihood, cultivating agriculture, Feng Shui, house construction. Sun Tzu's teaching contains stratagems to conduct life to gain happiness, peace, and prosperity as well.

    I can't remember where I heard it but it was during my military service when we discussed SunTzu and Clausewitz when we were talking bout maskirovka, and one of our NCOs mentioned that Clausewitz had a problem with alcohol and could have been drunk when he wrote that book, thus the contradictions.

    Hello Ruslan, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I don't know about the drinking problem of von Clausewitz, but maybe you are right. However I do remember that the book was not finished when von Clausewitz died. He had worked in irregularly on it. Often the writing was interrupted during many months because of the military campaigns in which he was involved. After his death, his wife Marie was so brave to collect his notes and to finalise the book ready for publication. It is not perfect, but nevertheless it is a book full of valuable insights. Hope to see you again Ruslan on Bold Books and Bones. FYI, I made a part 2 of this episode about the Art of War, here is the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i3ejpY-cYbm9gbA.html I wish you a nice day.

    Hi Lauren, thank you for you feedback and your interest in the Bold Books and Bones Channel. I'm happy that it helped. This way of thinking is indeed a different way of looking at War, in comparison of how we look at it in the Western world. Sun Zi's idea was to prevent direct confrontation. If you look at the Chinese Character for Martial Arts, called Wu, then you can see that it is composed of two parts. The two characters are Ge (weapon or violence) and Zhi (stop), so Martial Arts in traditional Chinese thinking had the purpose of stopping the violence. Enjoy your day.

    Its pretty difficult to truly understand Art of War for westerners because its actually an Anti War military doctrine in essence. Its Pacifist in nature but Realist in Reality. Its written in poetry form uncomprehensible to Westerners because Chinese way of communication is through idiom. The object of Idiom is to better explain what it really means. Unless you are familiar with chinese culture its very difficult. True understanding in chinese context is about Essence of what it means or nature but also include philosophy and values and belief. Pacifist in nature because War is Destruction and nothing good will come out of it. It takes years, decades and even centuries to build but War can cause it to lose everything in an instant. Realist in in Reality is because just because you are a pacifist does not mean others will not invade and destroying your entire Country causing incredible death and destruction. This is explained in idiom form translation but those who are familiar with Chinese culture also understand that it means Kings should focus all their time in developing and constructing if at all possible never engage in Invasions and make One's country so overwhelming that no one dares to invade. It does not advocate invasions at all. This is the essence, philosophy, values and belief. And if War is impossible to avoid only then does serious business of killing and slaughter begins. The Highest state of War is not losing even a soldier or spending anything and win means Possessing overwhelming Military strength through Development of economy and military absolute superiority that no one dares to Invade is the Final Goal. This is why its actually an Anti War doctrine. The object all along the ultimate Prize is No war. Next level of military strategic thinking is the Example you have shown in this video. All the subterfuge, assassination, espionage stuff is when you do not possess Absolute Military Deterrence. The philosophy is War is Evil but if its unavoidable then all means necessary. War then is classified in using Brains not brawn is superior grade while if brute force is used graded inferior but Realist as a win is a win. Its just the less damage you take the better. Its not anti brute force but use both brains together with brawn.

  • @BoldBooksandBones

    @BoldBooksandBones

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Andrea, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Happy to share some of my thoughts with you too. 1. From what I understand form what you write, I assume the audio book uses an old version of English because I see "thyself" and "thy" in the sentence. If this is the case I would advice to take a modern translation, because this is a very old text written in an old version of Chinese, so a modern english translation would make it easier to understand. 2. The sentence you choose is indeed a famous and important one. It is often translated as: "If you know the enemy and you know yourself, you need not to fear the result of a hundred battles." I think what is meant is that we have to understand our strengths and our weaknesses and we have to study our opponents strengths and weaknesses. In this way we evaluate what would be the best way to approach a difficult situation. This asks for self-reflection and for humility to also recognise the strengths of your opponent. All this is done to predict the possible outcome of our actions, hence the second part of the sentence "... you need not to fear the results of a hundred battles". The art of war is all about judging the consequences of our actions and to judge, if it is worthwhile to do them. Do we want the consequences? 3. This is a kind of book that most people have to read many times to find meaning in it for their own lives. I know that I do. This book is all about not fighting, not destroying, but instead avoiding the confrontation and winning without fighting. This is a concept that is not easy to understand when you think about the terrible condition of war. Therefore sharing and discussing your understanding of the book, with how other people understand this text, will help to grow your insight. These are just my thoughts and interpretations on this ;-) Hope it helps, Bold Books and Bones

It throws off the linear progression of the explanations and analysis you are giving. I understand that not everything can be done in one take. Cutting the pieces in together without a transition as a lot of other creators do, and at least for me as much preferred. The constant cut aways/music is almost painful.

    Hi Slays the day, thank you for your question about the Art of War. Yes I still read comments 😉... Yes, the translation by Thomas Cleary is the full book. He is a well known translator of Asian texts. My suggestion would be to read several translations of the book. The different variations might help to build up a more deeper understanding of the text. You might find that some translations start with a story about concubines. This story in itself contains two important lessons on leadership and command. On your question:”Is there more to it?”... well the Art of War by Sun Tzu is probably the most well known book. It is a small book of only 13 chapters. However there are at least six other works from ancient China that are as valuable and insightful as this book. If you are interested, I made another episode about one of these books. As a graduate student i saw "the art od war" in a used bookstore and bought it, and tried to read it. it rubbed me the wrong way as i was a pacifist. now however i realize that some human minds -- like me :/ -- have trouble understanding "strategy and deception" because of their wiring ... I had trouble understanding how anyone would invade forcefully etc... Now i am learning the world is full of many who use deception, therefore the book helps one to survive among wolves (metaphor may be weak, sorry). so in my adulthood i am giving this a read again, to see what it can teach me. thank you for reviewing both books. Will you do more on the western book? For example is there anything in western book that you might warn against?
