unless when your plan is that good that you don't need to consider the opponent. A pre-emptive/surprise attack is a nice example of this. Try to freeze your opponent. I am drawn to interpret that line as: don't let the enemy know your plans.

I disagree, the historical examples are those usually chosen in discussion of such matters (and subject to survivor bias) and there are few explained links to modern asymmetric warfare

Generally i can agree, but when it comes to specifics, i got conflicting information. Im at the part of deception and they're taking the inflatable army as an example, but they didnt replace those with actual tanks and planes, that was a diversion indeed, but the intent was to fool the germans into believing they got an invading army ready. I got this info what i just shared from a series on ww1 and ww2. The World Wars, a recommendation if you're into 20th century histoy.

By "War", it means a conflict, and "winning" by whatever means. When you include the loss of your own assets and the ongoing acrimony a non confrontational way can be the way to go. Don't forget, this is a "guide" for leaders of state, who tend to have a lot more to lose.

This actually helps me understand the Art of War a lot more now, especially with the examples

Awesome video. I read the art of war when i was about 15 over a summer from high school. I somewhat understood parts of it but using good clear examples really helps the ideas take shape.

Lovely video! Which version of the book did you use as reference? There seems to be many versions with different chapter names and or wording in the teachings.

Who else fell asleep watching vsauce or thoughty2 and woke up here?

I've read and do have the book myself..but, what the book doesn't tel you (and I never realized until this) that, for every lesson Sun Tzu teaches, there is a battle or historical example already set! I mean EVERY single one of them! That's astounding and it PROVES the timeline of just how far gone we really are now. That clock started counting down in 1948 when Israel became a nation again. Notice the technology. The bomb had just been used for the first time, two world wars killed millions Roswell got covered up. I mention Roswell because of that timing. It wasn't long after that the transistor came along. Then, masers, lasers, fiber optics, kevlar, space flight, stealth technology, etc, etc..the list is endless! Now? We have the internet, A.I. and the new tower of Babel - CERN, the most complex and largest machine EVER BUILT for atom smashing. There's SO much wire and cable at CERN that it could parallel Earth's orbit around the sun TWICE! TWICE!! Can you even picture that? All those spools. That's staggering. How much farther can we keep this up before something gives? God only knows - literally. What you see here is "the knowledge of good and evil" and a product of the original sin. That dawned on me one night when I first saw this video a few months back. There IS an art to violence and there's a certain wisdom that comes with a price. It took me over 50 years to realize this. With each year, it gets faster and faster and more distracting. Don't allow the world to deceive and distract you away from the truth. If you're younger, you'll see what I mean one day. If you're older like me, you KNOW exactly what I mean. Some things don't come from books or a computer. Some things only come with age and a day comes when you think to yourself: "Damn! Why didn't I see that before? It's been right in front of me all along!" No better place to hide something than 'in plain sight'. Wouldn't you agree?

Sun Tzu was using Chinese labour, so he was accounting for the shoddy workmanship and inevitable ramp collapses that would need repairing.

@@oldmandoinghighkicksonlyin1368 I don't think it has to do with shoddy workmanship on the part of the chinese. They had the know how, since they built incredible buildings. The thing with the romans is that they had a lot of of resources for logistics and every foot soldier had a lot of practice at building, since they are always building roads, forts, towers, siege engines and whatnot. Really, it wouldn't be until the 11th century that Europe would see the kind of engineering the romans could do, even in Italy. And maybe not even then.

@@thomaswright981 Not exactly. Most roman institutions (except for the church and a few others) crumbled along with the empire and much of classical writings lost for centuries. Much of medieval culture comes just as much from Germanic tribes that migrated on mass to the new territories. Franks, Visigoths, Lombard, Saxons. Not to mention that the Romans never went into eastern Europe, where they were influenced by Slavic and Steppe cultures. Of course, by the time Rome fell, the tribes had already being influenced by the empire, so there is that. Out of the top of my head, I think what roman influence made it self felt more strongly through christianism and some of it's law.

Kinda ironic to quote McArthur... A guy who was losing the war early on, do to his disdain for plans and stock, calling it "defeatism" preferring haste maneuvering that got in besieged with no supplies.

Morale Law = Propaganda for public support Heaven = Environmental elements Earth = Terrain The Commander = Obviously you need a skilled one. But some good commanders have fatal flaws that could lead to disaster no matter how brilliant they are in other areas. Method and Discipline = You need a well trained and disciplined fighting force that will still be effective when Hell brakes loose and it will.

I've always wanted to read the art of war but I have terrible ADHD and mild-moderate Tourette's syndrome. Holding a book or focusing on its contents for long enough to read is very difficult. I appreciate this video highly.

The book takes one hour to read, very quick and simple but also full of meaning. Worth a read anyway!

It's no COUNTRY benefits from a prolonged war, many, in the right place with the power to use it, make their fortunes out of it. There were Americans selling to both sides during WW2, they got a bit quieter when the USofA joined in the fighting. ( their weapons were coming back at them, or at least the children of more powerful people )
