The mist stops because of the fires being set by the military. That's the biggest "twist" of the whole film. The mist wasn't supernatural or divine, it was just fog. The film depicts the character's worlds being devoured by a Lovecraftian nightmare, but in the end it wasn't really a big deal. One town got destroyed and the military had successfully contained the situation in only a day. For all we know, Norton's group, who left the store just after the fog rolled in and well before any monsters arrived, may well have reached the edge of the fog and escaped without ever encountering any monsters at all. We see the fog and just assume there's nothing beyond it because we can't see it anymore, like the character in the book who suggests the ground is gone.

Norton's group maybe, however Norton himself, only a pair of legs return. We do see in the military caravan going past David in the end the woman who left by herself, so she survived, but she was the first one to leave, before Norton's group. The one thing the film made clear was the fact these creatures weren't attacking the humans as targets, but just living out their ecosystem on Earth instead of wherever. It's why the birds go after the insect creatures for the most part. Only one hits a person. The one girl dies from the insect because she freaks out and moves around a bunch. Carmody survives because she holds perfectly still, which makes her not a threat to the insect. However if you're a normal person in that situation, where you have seen others die in horrific ways, most would look to some kind of answer that they can comprehend, like God doing it.

Randall Flagg They leave to go shopping first thing in the morning, the guy gets burned after dusk, then they look for antibiotics and buy the time they get back he's dead and the soldiers have hung themselves. Then the last soldier gets sacrificed and the main character spends the Rest of the night planning to escape which they do first thing in the morning.

I loved how the film ending defied the trope of the military being useless, and how its set up resolves around the audience assuming the trope is in play.

DemoPlays The best thing about Stephen King is that The Mist is much smarter than just saying (religion is evil and stupid.) Yes. I despise the evil woman, of abusing her religion to spread more fear. BUT The Mist shows in fact evil, abuse of power and human fanatical desire to play gods with the world and other people. 1: Mother Carmody abusing her religion against others to get power, and we see how easily people breaking down and kill each other. (A religious human who played God.) 2: The American military ( in some vertions) created The Arrowhead Project, which slipped all the monsters into our world. It was not on purpose, but it was science that let them in. (Scientists who were playing gods.) Ultimately it depends on a chicken or the egg question. "Are people evil because religion is evil?" "Or is Religion evil because people are evil?" Stephen King replied that it is because WE humans are evil by nature, and will will not admit it and pushes it over on religion and politics. "As a species we're fundamentally insane tally. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill each other :" Stephen King.

I read the novella first, and expected a pretty faithful retelling. Minor changes aside, I was pretty comfortable going into the end. Then.....yeah, it hit pretty hard. Out of left field, if you already "knew" what was going to happen. One of those great subversions in cinema - one that actually works.

I love the movie and the book so much. I love that the book and movie have different endings and I sort of prefer the movie one solely for the shock horror gut punch. even Stephen king likes it better. it's one of the only horror books and movies I can get my sister to read and watch.

That ending is still probably one of the most soul stomping things I've seen in a fictional work, that wasn't just kicking someone while they're down, that was a savage merciless beating directly at his soul

The way I see it is, once David shot all the people in the car, including his son, the mist ended. Carmody said the boy needed to be the sacrifice, it makes me wonder if she was right, since once he was shot, the mist was ending.

I remember getting a Half-Life feel to this movie,. to later find out that the creators of the video game were inspired by the novel of this movie.

Video game aesthetic was also really influenced by 90's sci-fi movie starring Charlie Sheen called The Arrival. More than influenced, actually ripped off!

The end of this movie made me burst out laughing with a shocked look plastered on my face. It was so bloody sad, and to add icing on the crap cake it was, seeing that woman with her kids on the truck made it all the more heartbreaking.

But i dispise people trying to justify their bad deeds by "their god" or forcing their believe system onto others. everyone is agreeing with this , but , hear me out , what if i told you she was right ? by the end she was fighting to keep them in the store to save their lives , then she tries to save the boy's life by taking him from his father . had she succeeded they'd all be alive by the end of the movie also suicide is against abrahamic religions (before modernization) if David upholds that rule his son would be alive another point is the lady from the beginning of the movie who asked anyone to help her get to her children and they all refused , the "christian" thing to do was to help her , David said "i have my own son to worry about" but if he followed her his son would be alive too as she survives and you see her with her children in the end of the movie in the end all this did happen because the US military was playing god and it backfired i think i just saw the movie waay too much 😂😂😂

It's a metaphore, that sometimes what appears to be "good intentions" on the surface turns out not to be in the grand scale of things, often the result or combination of self-righteousness, oversensitivity or ignorance. Doing what you feel is *right* can be ultimately be absolutely wrong and doing more harm than good in the end. Example: An anti-vaxxer mom worries about the good health of her children and others (a good intention for all intents and purposes), and would like to see vaccins banned everywhere (a very bad thing for the whole of humanity). In the movie, the main protagnist has the very good intention of wanting to protect his son and other people from the crazed Carmody and survive this ordeal, however his every decisions ends up directly causing the death of every single one of them. Had he stayed quiet back at the store with is group, many could've have survived. But yeah, hindsight is always 20/20, I would have attempted the same things he did, really.

As much as I hated Carmody, I like how she is portrayed in this movie and the actor really did her job very well. She really represent religion in the middle ages, it was dark in those very earlier days and what happen when people used religion to explained unknown logic that cant be explained. Boom, useless human sacrifice and be killed off extremely easily. I cant blame David for his action at the end of the movie. Who knows what I would have done but I really would have those thought that he really did and carried out those action only to be heart broken in the end. And thats what makes this movie so damn good from other perspective.

I always interpreted the main theme of this film to be human nature, and the false veneer of internal morality that a funtioning and safe society engenders. Mrs. Carmandy is obviously mentally unstable right from the beginning of the film. She stands in contrast with the socially conditioned characters who play nice while being deeply selfish. As the movie goes on, society collapses, and 'normal' people break every taboo they hold sacred, one by one. Right and wrong breaks down, rationality and fantasy breaks down, sanity and insanity breaks down, and eventually even the group who clung to society's norms the longest break down, culminating in a father killing his own son. When society is restored, the full weight of the father's moral failings hit home, punctuated by the only woman who only acted selflessly throughout the entire movie, the mother with her kids at home, being existentially rewarded by surviving the ordeal with her kids by her side.

The woman didn't act "morally" - morally would have been to have prevented the Mist from occurring in the first place and thus saving all of those people. She did a reasonable action in the circumstances that were produced by that failure, that's all. "Protecting your kids" in a crisis isn't exactly morally profound. You could also say she was *immoral* for abandoning people she knew were in trouble to try to get to people who for all she knew weren't even in danger. Unless she lived in a social hellhole there was already a plan set up for neighbors to watch her kids in the case of emergency or if she had an accident. Society didn't come from a void, or a magical creation by an external agent. There must have been a time *before* society in our evolutionary history, therefore the absence of society didn't lead those animals to murder each other, or at least what murder did occur was overcome by social tendencies which allowed society to develop in the first place. King is a real Edgelord who thinks that humans are doomed to murder each other at the slightest sign of trouble, if his array of frantic fiction is anything to go by. He appeals to people with a dark view of human nature, but this view doesn't reflect the real world. Just as with any theory based on specific examples but lacking in absolute cohesion, you can always *point* to specific evidence to support the Edgelord claim that "humans are evil" - just watch the Nightly News without thinking about the reality behind it - King probably does.

There's too many people with that angsty edgelord vision of humanity as the real monster, always conveniently ignoring the fact that society itself didn't generate in a vacuum. Its nothing new to point out that we have "evil" tendencies as much as good ones too. The real deal is that we somehow evolve trough civilazation into the concepts that we like to force on to nature, such as love, compassion and empathy. Those are human concepts (as all concepts for that matter). Nature it's just what it is. There is no goodnes, cruelty nothing; just the urge to survive. But a lot of people tends to view it as a Disney movie with cuttesy animals and peace, when the truth is that seen from our human perspective nature is cruel. We, and some other especially inteligent species are the only ones capable of something even resembling compassion and empathy. The rest is pure instinct, more specifically, the survival instinct.

I remember when I first saw that ending, I hate how cliché it sounds but when the military (safety) rolled in I actually felt like I'd been punched in the gut. I was left just staring at the credits for a moment with a horrible empty feeling crawling up my throat. 10/10 movie, would definitely recommend. It's very rare for movies to actually make you feel something but this definitely did

you probably should have brought up that the ending is different than stephen kings novellas ending. Also fun fact is the mist is the only stephen king movie that has an ending stephen king likes and he wishes he would have written it that way

The ending still hurts me after 10 years. Just thinking about it cuts me so deeply I hit the bone..

I honestly found the ending hilarious. Because it's so silly that a huge military convoy, with loads of vehicles and soldiers using flamethrowers, somehow didn't make a single sound despite only being barely a minute away while driving quite slowly.

yes, I also hated that - directors and writers don´t seem to understand that this particular trope was invented by Night of the living dead to distract the viewer from a very thin plot and ridiculous innocuous zombies... no need for this in The mist that had good effects and very terrifying mosters... When your main threat is the humans, you are saying your monsters are shit.

Over a decade later and I’m still absolutely *fuming* about how the army grunts were treated even though there is no way they would’ve known anything

The problem is that god is a personnal concept, totally non sequitur with the world at large. human can be understood, and can understand things like gravity: that's natural and fondamental: it can be experienced and tested. God don't: moreover: we can't even cope and we will never have a sensical definition of the term. In conclusion: god is pure blah. For example: Afqwa said: ''That those fuckers get to live while his group dies is the real proof that there is no god.'' The god afqwa talk about is only is personal affect/vision of a ''perfect being'' which is absolutely equal to his ''Ideal Self''. IT's like the crazy bitch in the movie. (but him don't justify action, but absence of belief) And it can only be that when we talk about god... And that's why if a TRUE god exist, and his similar to human: his stupid or just don't care. (so is no god, or true ''perfect being'' > making this point irrelevant) And if his not similar to human: well... Lovecraft. And if it don't exist: well he don't exist. In any case: with the question of god in mind: we're left only with lovecraftian nightmare or a mirror of ourselve in pure Hybris (but we're all different: so it can became soonly an all out war). But what i've just described is the natural state of human being when left alone to reason with a deceptive world don't you think ? (lovecraftian nightmare + Own reflection in hybris)

Or the Jewish holocaust that happened in the Middle Ages because people blamed Jews for the Black Death. Humans would still have humanity even without religion. I would actually argue that we would have more humanity if we didn't have religion. Going back the Middle East, if they didn't have religion, they wouldn't be at war with each other since 632AD. We wouldn't have people hating each other because of religious beliefs. Witch trials wouldn't have happened, Middle Age and Renaissance era scientists wouldn't have been exiled or underfunded, Crusades wouldn't have happened, hell the majority of issues with early American involvement with Natives wouldn't have been so fierce if we didn't put religion first. So no, I 100% disagree that religion is our source of humanity.

The last scene in the movie crushed me. Not only because of the ending in general, but the stake to the heart for me was when we saw the single mother from the beginning, standing in the rescue military trucks with her two kids. That's the part that made me cry.

Not only the greatest ending of all time but the greatest horror film of all time. Truly a cinema masterpiece and it's one example of how talented and underrated Thomas Jane really is. Everyone else in the film does a great job but his performance was unbelievably good.

Writer: The closest and largest place in a town a lot of people can hole up in could be a supermarket, so let's have them take shelter there. Hollinger: It's a symbol for American consumerism and society, of course. Jokes aside, I do greatly appreciate your take on this. It's brought up many neat points on possible ulterior motives the writer was thinking about when writing the thing.

Doctor Strange closed the portal. That is what has always been my headcanon since I read the novella years ago.

"Monsters outside are as terrifying as monsters inside", that's the lesson Darabont took also to The Walking Dead (until they gave him the boot and the show was condemned to repeat the same stories over and over again).... The Mist clears when you finally realize you were no better than the other monsters after all... Thanx!!!

I just paused halfway through and watched the movie again and now I'm back two hours later. Thank you for inspiring me to rewatch!

Current topside temperature is 93 degrees with an estimated high of 105.....

IIRC The reason he shoots his son isn't to get rid of the mist, but to not let him suffer a gruesome death from the unknown horror that was approaching their vehicle. And the fact that the unknown horror turned out to simply be the military coming to rescue them was just bitter.

Hey Ryan, sorry for asking- but have you considered doing an analysis on some of the Silent hill games? 2 has been a fan favorite obviously, but maybe there is potential to dig through and look into the others like in the later series, such as 4. I feel like there is a lot more behind what we are shown. Or there is a subtext behind Henry's character, like his detached nature to the whole ordeal and his social isolation- even to the point where we don't get to experience Henry first being locked away in his room, and how we are given text explaining who Henry is and his issues, kind alienating the player from fully connecting with the character. Maybe it could be a future project for you, but even if you don't follow through the Silent Hill route, I still can't wait to see your future videos. Have a good day!

Wow I just noticed that Mrs carmodey said that if the boy dies the mist will go, just after the dad kills his son, the mist parted ways from the earth.

akaDiluted it’s also the reason why the character for ‘Dale’ died so early on in the show. In the comics he lasts much longer, but due to Darabont essentially being kicked from the project, the actor’s loyalty to Darabont was stronger than staying with the show. I don’t blame him for choosing to leave tbh.

I am a huge King fan and had loved the story when I first read it. I remember sitting with my mouth agape at the ending of the film because it was a. different than what I was expecting and b. so much better than what I was expecting. One of the only cases of the book and movie working together in harmony to create two distinct experiences that are both successful.

I always wished the mist had ended with a solider walking up to Thomas jane's character with a trombone and doing the 'waaaah-waaaaah-waaaaaaaaaah' noise.

Should have kept Frank Darabont as the director for TWD

David Dreyton Amc cut off the budget wayyy to much that he had no choice but to cut people. Watch some videos on how AMC treated Darabont on the budget even though they made shitton of money just for season 1. TWD just became a crashgrab after Darabont

Great analysis as always. One of the most terrifying idea of the film and much of King's films is the Biblical idea of the sin of the fathers being visited on the son and descendants. Even though the father is having an adulterous affair, the innocent wife and child suffer. So the death of the son is not a sacrifice so to speak but what is owed for the hero's sin. This is a trope that is stil present even in modern reality where folks will say things like, "God killed my son to teach me a lesson" etc.

To be fair in real life things you do affect those closest to you. Its not so much a Biblical idea as it is an idea the Bible writers already noticed about human nature and figured God was doing it.

Such a great movie! So scary how people can treat each other in unknown fearful situations. Not a movie I'd like to see again soon though. The ending almost made me sick, such a horrible situation. You did a great job explaining some parts I hadn't noticed!

Trevor White The best thing about Stephen King is that The Mist is much smarter than just saying (religion is evil and stupid.) Yes. I despise the evil woman, of abusing her religion to spread more fear. BUT The Mist shows in fact evil, abuse of power and human fanatical desire to play gods with the world and other people. 1: Mother Carmody abusing her religion against others to get power, and we see how easily people breaking down and kill each other. (A religious human who played God.) 2: The American military ( in some vertions) created The Arrowhead Project, which slipped all the monsters into our world. It was not on purpose, but it was science that let them in. (Scientists who were playing gods.) Ultimately it depends on a chicken or the egg question. "Are people evil because religion is evil?" "Or is Religion evil because people are evil?" Stephen King replied that it is because WE humans are evil by nature, and will will not admit it and pushes it over on religion and politics. "As a species we're fundamentally insane tally. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill each other :" Stephen King.

The scariest part of The Mist is that guy's eyebrows.

Saw gets a lot of hate, but even if you don't like slasher/serial killer movies you've got to admit that the first one was really great, it didn't even have much gore and really was more of a murder Mystery, I mean sure as it went on the traps got more and more brutal and violent, and started reaching Gorno levels, but I still love the story. I get it you really only like movies for "smart" people that are full of symbology and have intricate plots, and in depth themes, which is fine, but I urge you to at least give the first film another chance. Haven't seen Hostel yet but my Brother has only said great things about it.

I actually love the first one, but as a fan, I was deeply frustrated with it's dramatically degenerated sequels. When James Wan and Leigh Whennell were attached for the first three, it was totally fine. But 4-7 are just shit. In terms of "smart", neh, that's nothing to do with it. It's pretty blatant when a film is just insulting your intelligence to exploit a gimmick at the expense of a good story.

See, Saw DOES have a really intricate plot though. I should know, I own all the movies and have seen them all several times (I have a tendency to make other people watch movies I like, which of course means watching them again myself). People just overlook that for some reason. I'm not saying it's a GOOD plot the whole way through, and they definitely shouldn't make more. But people who say it doesn't HAVE one are simply incorrect. Also the first one's REALLY good. The first three, I would argue, are good. It's a creative idea and I hate that the later films in the series took that away from them.

Hostel is a really good movie worth the watch, I loved the concept and execution.

The story really is about hope and how we all have different views of what it means. David ultimately holds out as long as he can before he gives up hope at the worst possible time. Had he held on for just a few moments longer, they would all have lived. Also, a lot of really interesting comments in this thread with solid points. Thanks for these videos, Ryan.

When I first saw the movie, I was pissed. Watched that whole movie for a gutpunch of an ending. Hell, I still hate it. But I appreciate it. Because it did something different. If all movies ended the same, what's the point of watching them? Not every story has a happy ending.

I enjoyed this video a lot! This movie is incredible, and shockingly despite the horrible graphics. However, I think you should give Hostel another chance! I have always seen so much depth in the first two movies, especially the original. I know that's lost on most people. But I'm dying for an in-depth analysis of it!

You know what the funny the I ng is about the mist is that they used half of the walking dead chactrts as background people

The thing that gets me honestly in these kinda movies, or the premise in general, is how almost no one as a whole agrees to try and help one another and instantly tries to more go for selfish needs. I know as a society that is probably what would end up happening after the initial bumrush and people getting trampled as others seek safety but it still makes me deeply sad, knowing that people really are like this.
