The art of taking a break: Are the French always on vacation? • FRANCE 24 English

In this week’s show, we focus on working life in France, or rather the time that French people take off work. The French have the reputation of being on vacation a lot. Compared to other countries, France is very generous when it comes to annual leave. So what's behind this phenomenon? On top of paid holidays, there are extra days off as well. All this begs the question: how does anybody get any work done?

Oh, they know. And so do European and other international firms. That’s one (of many) reasons they prefer to invest in the US and both capital investment and jobs flow to the US.

Okay. I’m all for time off, but this strikes me as a terrible way to encourage investment in jobs and employment. Let’s not pretend this level of making it really expensive to employ someone in France doesn’t come at a cost. The numbers show that capital prefers to invest elsewhere - especially in the US, and this video hints at one of many reasons.

@@DRL1320 Are you American? Some US companies, e.g. the high tech sector, has already cottoned on to higher productivity by allowing people to balance work-life. They get more done than we do north america with a joke of 2 weeks off, even workers in cambodia and thailand get more than we do. Their workers have incentives to work efficiently because they have something to look forward to. Time to enjoy activities they can enjoy while they are still alive and healthy. Meanwhile in places with poor time off, workers literally stop caring and become less efficient. Why should they care? They dont get benefits from working hard. Just my opinion. Tell me, would you work hard if all you got as a reward was more work?

Taking breaks from your work life is something necessary, refreshing AND beneficial to your productivity at work. What I can't understand is the obsession of Europeans with holidays in far-flung locations... it's like they consider themselves poor if they can't travel outside of their country once a year for holidays. This is not how most of the world lives.

The French did what they needed to set themselves up. The US f itself when it decided to leave benefits to individual employers. Sad to say, this was due to the unions (and of course, racism). Any American ever wonder why jobs in the private sector tends to have great benefits? Well, thats where most white workers were employed and you know they weren't about to let the government push equality on them. Yeah, y'all, we nearly had a system where the government would have mandated those things. Instead, cross your fingers and hope your job offers it. I have thankfully worked for employers who offered paid time off. My first employer was the only one that only had two weeks. Since, ive never had a job that didn't offer at least 4 weeks off, 10 days sick, and all the national holidays. I didn't even know elections day was a holiday until my current job.

Every company I have worked for in the US have had paid vacations. And they all set it up about the same. The older you are the more vacation you get. Plus all the federal holidays. Personally, I don’t feel I need more vacation. My company, on top of all the federal and state holidays, gives us, on average of 3.5 weeks per employee per year. If you are older you get around 6.5 weeks. In fact, companies without paid vacation in their benefit package have a really hard time retaining employees.

Lool, I can't understand how someone would not feel pride in saying "I have an interesting day job, and I still get enough free time to a) develop my personal projects, b) travel and know the world, c) be happy and care for my mental health, d) have family time, e) etc and so on and so forth... If you can't understand it as anything other than laziness, you probably have a very very boring life, unworthy of any extra time outside of your job.
