Parisiens: How to live in the biggest city of France | French Connections Plus • FRANCE 24 English

#Paris has been a source of fascination for centuries and the #French capital is one of the most visited cities in the world. By day or by night, it’s a beautiful city packed with towering #monuments, inspiring #museums and romantic cafés and yet, #tourists often say Paris would be so nice if it weren't for the Parisians. So where does this bad reputation come from? In this episode of French Connections Plus, Florence Villeminot and Genie Gordula turn the spotlight on the City of Lights and its peculiar inhabitants: les Parisiens.

I traveled 12 times to Paris. Parisians are amazing. Helpful, sharp, cultured and industrious. Learn the etiquette, it's more important than learning french.

I once left Paris to arrive at a conker tree, where I picked from its street its fruit. It was set near a harbour at Nice though I could not find an opponent to contest with. I returned of course to the city by nightfall and joined again queues of people for food. I was a wandering lone man of poverty then and shall never forget her kindness. She kept me alive and free of harm and even taught me of art and her neighbourhood charms. Kind regards LM

This is not totally true. Sure there are all sorts of Parisians but usually, if you start by saying bonjour and then try to ask your question using a few French words, you get helped and smiled at EVERY TIME. Also remember that during holidays (July August) there are more visitors / tourists than Parisian. So are you sure you asked a Parisian?

Not true. I tried using my OK High School French on Parisians and was repeatedly spoken to in English, so using French doesn't necessarily endear you to them. I say so what, The world is learning English not French. Snobby Parisians need to get a life.

In the public transport people are more grumpy, especially at peak hour. But it's totally normal as they are exhausting, there are a lot of people and you are called every other minute for some reason by a stranger (beggar, lost tourist, advertisements etc...). It requires a too much energy to answer politely to all these so they prefer ignoring them. At other times of the day, people are more friendly, they are not 5 ppl/sq m in a train going to/back from work which is not really happy. It is just the reality of the life in Paris that causes this mood especially in public transportation. Moreover most of the so called 'parisians' are ppl from Province that came there to work/study. There is no such think as normal people vs alien Parisian.

What's not to like? As someone who has actually lived there several years: - Overpriced real-estate - Traffic and regular subway strikes (= national sport) - Pickpockets everywhere - Dog shit and piss (people walking their dogs let their dogs piss on every car wheel they walk by) - Some unsafe ghetto neighborhoods with graffiti everywhere Nice place to visit perhaps, but I wouldn't want to live there again.

I spend half my time chasing after people and following up on things, so I get why you would have that impression. It just a different pace of life and you get used to it eventually. My italian colleagues, on the other hand, find that things move too quickly here. Go figure!
