As a resident of Copenhagen, I feel compelled to offer a different perspective on the city's portrayal as the greenest. While Copenhagen undoubtedly has its charms, the reality of its environmental efforts often falls short of the glossy image projected. Let's talk trees - or rather, the lack thereof. Contrary to the narrative, the city isn't exactly teeming with greenery. In fact, the municipality's reluctance to invest in tree planting has resulted in a noticeable scarcity of foliage, with existing trees often falling victim to budgetary concerns. Remember that wave of excitement when they planted a slew of trees a few years back? Well, they were promptly deposited in a forest miles away from the urban sprawl. Yet, conveniently, they're still counted in Copenhagen's 'green' credentials. And then there are the heralded projects like CopenHill and urban gardening initiatives. While touted as groundbreaking, they're hardly novel and certainly not representative of everyday life for Copenhageners. Instead, new urban developments predominantly feature a sea of concrete and glass, with sustainability taking a backseat to profit margins. Let's not forget Lynetteholm, a stark reminder of misplaced priorities where community well-being takes a backseat to monetary gain. Copenhagen is a city with immense potential for environmental stewardship, but the current narrative of it being the greenest capital couldn't be further from the truth. So, by all means, visit, enjoy the sights, but let's not turn a blind eye to the reality beneath the surface. Only through honest critique and a collective commitment to change can we hope to see Copenhagen truly live up to its green aspirations. Thank you.

Thanks for keeping it real. If I'm ever in Denmark I'll have to pass on Copenhagen but I'll visit the forest where said trees were planted for sure. Nature is so much more exciting and novel than anything I've seen in metros like LA, San Francisco or Berlin for example. Why do you think the Danish government & people preach "green" & environmental but like you said fall short?

No city is perfect, I’m in Melbourne Australia, a city having been voted the most liveable in the world many times but carrying this mantra needs adaptive ongoing environmental planning for sustainability.

The most accurate part of the title is the question mark. If you've ever lived in Copenhagen, you must have noticed how little green there is, save for a few parks.

Correct. There are very few trees, due to Elms tree disease wiping a lot out some decades ago. They could have done something about it though

@@WantstobeaKiwi 1)There are FAR fewer reports and discussions on racism on German media than USA or UK 2) Anti racism measures are limited to media box ticking (one Black and one Hijabi woman is permanent immunity against racism allegation) 3) Germans and thereby German media focuses only on far right extremism, and zilch on everyday discrimination by Germans hiding behind a liberal façade.

I live near Malmö so I get to visit Copenhagen fairly often. I absolutely love exploring Copenhagen. Never seen so many innovations that looked as modern and fun while respecting the environment the way as in this city. It is truly a city of the Future. Congrats to the Danish people!

I am in Copenhagen for the first time right now, the amount of freaking loud cars or motorbikes here doesnt really reflect the respect for the environment

Positively shocked to say at least that ppl from Belgrade came for advice and want to do something positive for the city. Hope they actually do something and that this was not some part time vacation for them. Same change needs in Novi Sad and other Serbian cities.

Many thanks to DW for creating such well-produced documentaries and for making them accessible. It's great to know that there are some forward-thinking politicians and corporations who genuinely care about the citizens (no such luck here in the States).

I think it has a lot to do with less inequality in Denmark, our politicians are more in power than in the US. And it may also have to do with our election system, the parliament and city council corresponds relatively precisely to the views of the people. Next to all views are represented.

The title is a bit funny to read as a Swede. Whenever I travel over from Malmö and exit the train, the central station area absolutely reeks of diesel because the Danish trains still run on this stuff. In Sweden that's not the case. That being said, Copenhagen is still a great town to visit any day of the year! ... but environmentally friendly? The feeling I get when visiting is that the ambition is there but the reality is different.

Love Copenhagen! What a beautiful place to visit & enjoy!

Somewhere around 60% of denmark is agricultural land. Wild nature is almost nonexistent. We have several organizations where private citizens can donate to buy back land from farmers to save nature, because our shifting goverments utterly fail to protect nature time and time again. The danish populations consumption is such that if everyone on the planet lived like us we would need 1,7 earths to sustain it. But our politicians sure are talented at greenwashing, bullshitting and padding themselves on the back and the population, for the most, buy into it. Things could be better, they'll probably get worse, seems to be the worldwide trend these days.

All of these things in the video is great, but Denmark is still behind on it's climate targets for 2030. I wish more Danes demanded more from the government in accordance to climate actions.

Riding a bicycle is a great way to exercise. Ebikes are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so adults and children can ride safely. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Bicycles make life and cities better. Ask your local transportation planner and elected officials to support more protected bike lanes and trails. Children should be riding a bicycle to school and not be driven in a minivan. Be healthier and happier. Ride a bicycle regularly.

While CPH is undoubtedly beautiful in many parts, the city and government have done really well marketing themselves while the actual on the ground experience of these "green cities" is far from beautiful. Lots of concrete, glass and bland buildings with very little greenery in the design

I go to Copenhagen every summer and it’s a pleasure for sure but I guess DW has not been in Stockholm yet🙋🏼‍♀️

Sorry but am I crazy, as a tourist I just didn't see Copenhagen being even close to being green at all let alone,, greenest capital city''. Even in this documentary, everything is gray and bare concrete. One rooftop garden and garbage incinerator are just not green in my eyes. A lot of streets in the city center are like a canyon with concrete and stone. Berlin and Stockholm are much bigger cities and they are just a gazillion times greener than Copenhagen. Using bicycles everywhere is nice for the environment but if they want to have, the, greenest capital city'' they need more. Also not a huge fan of the star architect his architecture is just green in his eyes but realistically speaking he has a lot of projects that you can clearly see that maximizing profit was the main goal. A lot of greenwashing and gimmicky stuff such as vertical farming not a lot of nature-oriented projects.

I respect their way of tackling with urban issues considering future in a long time span. As a japanese architect, I got a lot inspiration from Copenhagen. We japanese need to learn from this. In Japan, even if we have potential of utlizing ocean area, unfortunately we don't have any sense like them because of lacking considering future, our government only think money and think in a short term.

the best sustainability for any city is to incorporate nature with a lot of green and trees and vegatation. Sustainability with just concrete structures is not sustainable. I still think Copenhagen is the most beautiful city in the world though!. ❤

i think the vertical farming concept only counters emissions from food transportation & conventional farming activities if it's energy source is strictly renewable 🤔

If you go to Bangkok or Jakarta, you can smell the river or canals from very far away. You don't need to look at it to know it's filled with trash and all sorts of rotting things. That river is very clean relatively.

I wish we were like Denmark, but Americans would never give up there cars for bicycles either. Automobiles are a status symbol, a means of impressing other people. I know many people that only work so they can have an expensive car.

Belgrade needs urban planners. ACTUAL urban planners

Those glamorous projects like CopenHill, "green" fashion weeks, etc, are not thought out radically enough. Below those ski slopes, they are still burning garbage. They still use a giant amount of energy. Planners put a lot of thought into figuring out how to enable people to meet their demands in a more sustainable way, but the real question would be: How to undo marketing and social norms, in order to make people think sustainably on the lowest level. Something as radical as abolishing the concept of ownership or status. Instead of debating whether electric energy or hydrogen are better to fuel a "sustainable" SUV, we must figure out how to make people desire to not own or drive an SUV (or any car at all.) Else, we only have some kind of indulgence trade for a small, wealthy elite who can afford building all kinds of futuristic architecture. So, from all those "green" concepts, one of the few that is actually convincing is to make cities walkable and to reallocate public space from car to bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.

Great video, but how do poor countries afford all the green energy and gadgets and EV's? In my country where we have high unemployment, poor cant buy food, dont have good accommodation. Priorities in 3rd world countries are different to first world rich countries

as a dane i would make more money in most 3rd world country´s then i do in denmark.. everyone needs to start from somewhere, its not like i havent been hungry and not to have money for food.. and i have been living on the street with no roof over my head when i was in that situation i left denmark and came back with more.. now i make money by using the energy the sun makes, many things can convert electricity into money. and i live in denmark where there is very little sun and everything is very expensive.. my bitcoin is worth the same all over the world, its not like i use some magical danish valuta that makes me rich i would pay alot less tax and produce way more bitcoin if i was in most other countrys and i could also get electricity prices for 1/3 in most other places, so i dident have to run my miners on solar in scandinavia where we have no sun creating a job for yourself is always better then getting it from someone else.. and if a place is bad, then leave it, like many other people did to make a better life i doubt i would have had a better life if i havent left denmark, sometimes change is needed to make a difference copenhagen is one of the worse city´s i know, most people i know that was born there like me have moved away.. its to expensive and to stressful i got a house in the other end of the country now that cost 1/50 of what my old house in copenhagen costed.. and i pay 1/30 in tax for same size house

Start teaching design in the third grade? In the States that would never fly. I think it's a good idea to be different. Incineration of waste has many issues: micro toxins and plastics released into the environment. As noted in the piece we must consume less stuff. Do we own the stuff or does it own us? A doc that makes you think.

Nordic nation is praiseworthy. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An egalitarian and cohesive society where there is no poverty. I live in Copenhagen, and I can tell you it's grey and depressing af.

The city is absolutely stunning in the older parts but many of the modern districts are absolutely soulless and not many people visit them unless they live there or know someone that does. These structures are really ruining the soul of the city and making for some pretty depressing places in a city that has so much architectural beauty for inspiration.

So saying it's "the greenest capital" is misleading if the city only has 600k inhabitants, you can't expect a city of several million to be as green as a city of half a million. There is plenty of green cities all around the world with similar size as copenhagen. Not many capital cities tho since most countries have way bigger capital cities. Just compare it to cities with similar size next time, don't compare it to "capital cities"

I find obsession with “green” cities strange. So if I want to live in a city, by which I mean rich cultural and social life accessible on foot or short public transportation ride, do I have to move to the forest? Maybe people obsessed with grass should move to the suburbs and leave in peace cities as they originally evolved?

Vertical farming is a hype. And I can’t believe someone is pointing that conventional forming taking 30% of the land to achieve. So what do you want? You want 100% of the land with buildings? Common guys nature can take care of itself if you don’t disturb, so don’t say this conventional farming affects the climate change. Am really sad for the people who believe what is shared in this video in the last part.

This city is very beautiful, without a doubt. However, it must be said that it is a small city in a rich country. It's not even possible to compare Copenhagen with São Paulo Population: Copenhagen: 602,481 São Paulo: 12.33 million Denmark: 5.9 million Total area: Copenhagen 90.01 km² São Paulo: 1,521.2 km² Denmark: 42,952 km² São Paulo has twice the population of Denmark in an area 28 times smaller than that country. The problems São Paulo faces are infinitely greater than Copenhagen.

The biggest lie about farming is that it contributes to global warming, nothing could be further from the truth. Farming is actually carbon neutral. Referring to the architect in this video: To me the title “renowned architect” is a red flag. In Copenhagen there loads of grey modernist buildings mainly made from concrete and steel. The beautiful part of the city is the historic part like Nyhavn with its colorful traditional buildings. For a city where it’s mostly rainy, windy and grey those modernist buildings make the city quite depressing. The little green that you can only enjoy in late spring and summer do not make up for it either.

vegetables are healthy .............biggest lie ever! want to have a green city, let's see some trees, animal farms (small scale) less concrete. Have more meat markets , red meat is super healthy (Super food that you do not have to fly in from South America...... caugh caugh....avos)

@@merijnvl4832 If you define healthy as is what is best for your body(nutrition) vegetables are not it. that is what I meant. when people hear veggies are healthy than most of the time it is as opposed to meat and animal fat., which is clearly not the case: Person A: has a full salad spread Person B: Has meat with fat most observers would say Person A has a healthier spread than B.... again, not true We have been conditioned to think veggies are healthy without questioning this logic.

No, there are no harmful emissions from these incineration plants. All of that is captured during this process. The technology has advanced a lot.

I’ve been to the top of Copenhill several times, and I even visited the old incineration plant as a kid before it was decommisioned. Copenhill has no smell at all compared to the old plant, and neither of the plants emitted any toxic fumes or gases, since we can afford modern and safe infrastructure. The only real points of criticism is that the plant is too big, so we had to import trash to burn, and the skiing thing is a gimmick, the waterskiing track next door gets significantly more traffic.

Excuse me, but I don't see a beautiful green city in this video.

Also the world's whitest capital city 😴
