The interviewer is an academic. Speaking as a physiologist, I'll correct myself: the interviewer is a psychologist. His questions are aimed at trying to understand Kevin's willingness to risk his life during thousands of encounters with an apex predator. Where his questions are ineffective is that human behavior is extremely complex. Risk taking is something we all do, every time we drive a car, or fly an aircraft. Kevin used an exceptional analogy: piloting. I share his interest in flying. My first instructor said to me, during my first flight, "a superior pilot is one who uses his superior judgment to stay out of situations that might require his superior skills". Kevin doesn't claim to be immune to risk. He's simply humble enough, and experienced enough to understand when he is taking foolish risks. The interviewer implied that Kevin is some kind of adrenaline junky. A complete mischaracterization. Kevin works in a gangrenous environment, but his eyes are wide open, and he understands the risks he takes. He is married, a Father, and he has a passion for Lions, Panthers and Hyenas. I watch all of Kevin's videos, and admire his mission. It's sad for anyone to reduce his life's work to a need for a rush...

I could listen to Kevin forever. His knowledge is so important. Smart, funny and he has a good heart. I know he can be nervous before talking in front of many people but he is still doing it for the lions. So my deepest respect.

I'd rate Kevin Richardson roughly 1000x more interesting than the psychologist, even with chairs reversed

Whisperer = most knowledgeable while being humble and still respecting and knowing every risk.

Major respect to Kevin, it takes massive balls and passion to get to the level of understanding of predators that he has. The bucket mataphor is spot on, i like it.

I noticed that, yes . he is definitely humble, and that's what earns the title of being a great man. , a great human being. Thanks to him, lion's have a much better chance of avoiding extinction. His help to these Big Cats, is unique, inasmuch as he is not keeping them as pets or for amusement , but has a serious attitude and sense of responsibility !

"Go in and 'assess the probability' "?? Uh, no. Exactly, Kevin hit it spot on: he goes with the flow. Too much intellectualism from the interviewer there. He clearly doesn't get it. It's about gut instinct as Kevin says, which most people could benefit from sharpening! Not to mention trust, which Kevin has immense amounts of from his lions. These things take time to hone and develop. He does amazing work and is truly admirable.

If you listen to Kevin speak about what would happen if he let other people into the enclosures with him he makes it clesr, this isn't safe. If he thought he was getting over on lions, he would invite that. But he knows he has built a long long road of trust with these animals and he knows his place. He knows what he can do and what he can't. He knows when he can assert his place and when he he can't. He's not smug. He's educative and insistant.

I didn't like the interviewer but Kevin did a good job.

The interview was perfectly fine until around @12:00 minute mark. That's when the interviewer tried to psychologize Kevin and took a more condescending tone. Kevin handled it with the upmost professionalism. I love this man.

This interviewer literally sounds like a 5 yr old asking the stupidest questions. He should have asked more questions about the condition of lions in Africa, Canned Hunting and spreading awareness, which was most likely the only reason Kevin was there on this show in the first place.

I agree. Kevin was there for awareness of the Lions' decrease in the wild. I guess they should have focused more on Kevins' organizations cause, not how dangerous those lions are. Of course they can be dangerous depends on how the lions sees a person in their own perspective.

Just think about it. Kevin is among the less than 1% of humans on the planet to live with these wild majestic animals. He is rarer than astronauts who have actually travelled in space. Fascinating.

OMG! I LOVE KEVIN! We need so many more conservationists like Kevin,to protect and preserve the remaining VERY ENDANGERED ones of the TOP FIVE,in the wildlife world! I've followed Kevin for years,on all his KZread videos,and to watch him interact with his Lions,with so much LOVE & CARE,it gives me chills at how these Lions accept him and love him,too,I believe! He is one incredibly wonderful most compassionate man and he deserves every bit of help he can get from those of us who love our wildlife and want to see them be here for many generations to come! Kevin is a smart guy. He recognized the problem with the interviewer’s question relating to the oil rig, etc, right away. Namely, the sentience of lions changes the dynamic of that analogy, by a good degree, in my opinion.

kevin is a really smart person in general not only with lions im impressed to be honest i didnt expected , dont know why i assumed hes only an animal lover bu hes an amazing human beeing!

What a bloke this is. What a 'human being' he is! To suggest Kevin is 'committed' would be a gross under-statement. NO sign of arrogance. NO sign of 'look at me'. Just a wonderful person who absolutely loves what he is doing in his life and I just wish him NOTHING but the very best for the future. Tc Kev.

complete honesty & humility! As tragic as it was to Loose such a lovely bloke like Steve Irwin, he was soo excitable & not every animal likes excitable energy! Well done Kevin Richardson, he's stated categorically that he would NEVER approach a Lion.he hadn't known from 6mnths onwards! I find this man very humble & passionate which resonates too with his colleague Rodney & his lovely wife Mandy! keep up the Good work Mr Richardson!!

WOW. How beautifully and informatively Kevin answers those questions! What a wonderful gifted man! While I understand the anger and disgust towards Dan Ariely for his condescending manner, the title does say "Lion Behaviorist", so at least it was to be expected that he would focus on those questions. But a whole bunch of Respect to Kevin!

He’s absolutely beautiful, handsome, humble and an amazing man.

I love Kevin. I support the Kevin Richardson Foundation which buys land for lions as well as other wildlife. He never carries a whip, a chain or a stick to protect himself. The lions run at him when he enters his enclosures, they come and literally hug him with their front paws around his neck. They rub their faces on his face. He does not beat them into submission. He shows love, understanding, patience. He is one of a kind. He has been interacting with lions for 21 years and a lion has never put him in the hospital. He has had a few trips to the emergency room but no major injuries. My dying wish would be to spend one day with Kevin and the lions and to see the magic up close!

I love the lion whisper but dislike the host what's his problem ?

What conservationists miss is that Kevin having lions and the way he treats them which not as pets, he is showing anyone who desires a lion for a pet that it is not possible. He shows that you can not treat them as pets and he shows how much hard work is involved in caring for them. All this will result in discouraging at least many from wanting any wild animal as a pet which conservationists should be glad about.

In my Childhood my thinking was only that we can love and be friend with only those animals who are potentially less harmful and calm in nature.....But Sir Kevin's love, care and his dedication for the jungle kings totally changed my thinking.....He taught me and all of us that each and every animal can be loved and respected equally if we are devoted to that....and if we are devoted to that without any expectation then we will be also equally respected and loved by the wild ones.....

Kevin is awesome, i love the way he takes care of his lions even operations when they are sick. He treats them with utmost respect.

The interviewer asking Kevin "How do you remember how dangerous they are?" is such an armchair question, where one has never experienced themselves in the presence of physical grandeur.

In my opinion, the interviewer is great. I've learned a lot from this interview. Kevin is absolutely admirable. The lions and animals are lucky to have him.

The interviewer is the Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics. An Israeli American, he was 70% burnt in a explosive accident during celeberations. He seems to have done a good job of keeping Kevin at ease during the interview, knowing fully well that he is not used to such audiances.

I think its incredible we are almost 4 years on from this and Kevin is doing great.., from a sociological point of view this is gold dust.., people often ponder upon the missing link but few give credence to the link between man and animal.., I think this is amazing and I hope to enjoy Kevins work with the lions etc for many years!

I see in the big cats and Kevin echoes of the way my cats and I acted with each other, minus the dimension of size. A pet cat if he or she gets excited enough in play to kick you and bite your arm as they often feel like and do, soon teaches you how well equipped the cat of any size is - one learns to be cautious. But the affection and the loyalty, this is what I have learnt the most about with my cats, the irreplaceable happiness of being their friend, loved by them. Kevin is right. They do know him and they are his friends as he is theirs, it is a bond of love and respect. The size of the lions actually makes it easier, not more difficult, for Kevin to learn how to show his respect for them; with small pet cats, the cat makes his or her feelings clear but it can be harder for a human to reciprocate properly because size dominance favours the human. The person can end up following a human social expectation to the detriment of the expectation of cats, the practices of cats in relationships. I made mistakes trying to accommodate displacements caused by human standards that were not feline standards. To do that with lions would be to invite prompt destruction. My cats have suffered on the occasions when I put up with a human demand that was not good for them. I was so proud to be trusted by them, every time, every cat, and so ashamed to let them down the times that this has happened. If you love a cat and the cat loves you, there is intense and straightforward closeness which is rare with a human. Humans are much less reliable towards each other, even in families humans can fail in a way that a cat, big or small, does not. A cat bond is almost unbreakable. I love the nature of cats.

Kevin has done some great work, raising awareness towards lion conservation and otherwise. His mentality towards conservation and not breeding just to keep populations afloat is awesome. He has evolved a lot and all for the good. The interviewer here has a mission, not a good quality for an interviewer. He wants to get an answer that he wants to hear.

+sal degusano I don't care if he is a behavioral expertise elite guy from Duke university. This had to b one of the worst interviews I've ever seen. 1. He harps over n over n over n over on the same point again again. Alright we know it's dangerous. 2. He seems like he's talking down to Kevin with his line of questioning. 3. Then he tries to degrade the Lions. Then he tries to Degrade what there trying to do. which I believe is a great n wonderful thing that will make a substantial difference not just 4 Lions or predators but for all of African wildlife which will b felt worldwide. Kevin did a great, great job of not only tolerating this windbag but giving back good answers to his idiotic questioning. That has to b 1 of the worst interviewers I've ever seen. I'm wrong I've seen many many A hole interviewers before just as bad or worse.

Yes Kevin seems to be a really tolerating person. I suppose that's why he can do what he does. I'm so glad for these forms of communication. Things that were impossible not long ago are possible today. It nice to see Kevin's sanctuary grow and to become what it is today. I remember in the beginning him saying he didn't know what would become of it. Now he knows.

The interviewer is overanalyzing something relatively simple. Everything in life is a risk. Driving a car is a risk, flying a plane is a risk, going outside is a risk. Surgery is a risk, going to the dentist is a risk. Even the interview they are doing is a risk. The solution is to get educated about the situation, prepare yourself properly etc... You get educated about something, you gain experience and you lower the risk... it's not that complicated. That's life basically. The guy's talking about lions as if it's some random roll of dice. It isn't obviously. There are behaviors, cues etc... which Kevin has obviously learned how to read.

The interview definitely proceeded as if Kevin were on trial and he did very well. I was thinking that putting his interrogator in a pen with the lions would soon enlighten him about the truth or otherwise of Kevin's explanations of his experience. However, testing Kevin did mean that the spectator had to think about the subject too and proved Kevin's consistency. Either one believes in the affections of big cats or one is left with nothing but a perception of them as mechanical, rather than living, thinking, feeling creatures like all living creatures. Ariely was conducting the interview with deliberate scepticism. Lions, however, are not sceptics. They act according to what they believe and these lions believe in Kevin's goodwill, they believe he does not intend any harm to them. No animal in its right mind calmly hangs out with a threat to their well being. If Kevin were acting to give himself a thrill he would make the lions uneasy. Ariely emphasised an idea that lions were all unpredictable. Any creature seems unpredictable if you do not know the creature well, humans included. Kevin was patient in response to Ariely's persistence in reserving his right to doubt the opinions of his interviewee. Ariely is intelligent, undermining, determinedly unemotional, and a skilled manipulator, did he ever have a previous life in the secret service?

Why does the host/interviewer has his own name in huge letters on his sweater? Weird. I enjoyed the interview. Kevin was very open and honest about his motivations and the hardships he faced in the beginning, which was interesting to learn. I don't think anyone knows better than him about lions. He earned this expertise the hard way, exposing himself to danger and pouring in immense dedication and hard work. I wish him all the best and that he may continue doing what he does for many years to come.

great interview. although the man asking the questions was understandably skeptical of lion / human friendship, knowing how unpredictable and dangerous humans can be, he asked intelligent and respectful questions.

I am watching this in 2018. Recently "discovered" Kevin Richardson & his "family". Read his book which I highly recomend. Anyway my idea is that if everyone who enjoys these vids sent him say, $5.00, or the equivalent it would help him & the fabulous lions. Hey it's the price of a "Starbucks" overrated coffee for God's sake! (Make my own btw) Sorry this is so long. People hate that! So maybe it's a possibility? A "Go Fund"?? An international worldwide "paying it forward"? !!

DAN ARIELY is a great writer, but they forgot to mention when speaking about a danger, that this lions know Kevin from childhood, they trust him, and respect him.They treat him like his own, and they will never hurt him.He also feeds them and is taking care of them. And they know that.

So I like this interview. It shows a side of Kevin I really like. His ability to GRT right to the heart of the question asked. I thought the questions were good. Especially about familiarity causing Kevin to relax his guard. He always seems to take his lions seriously. Reading Cats does get easier with time. All cats ,Big and small ,seem to have low tolerance for foolishness,however, they all give physical signs that they are annoyed. Woe be to any human twisting the cats tail at a bad time. Hey even horses can be moody and nasty. Kevin knows!

Kevin R. is eloquent in expressing exactly what needs to be said. Why is every interviewer presuming the lion can get dangerous to Kevin? It is paradox, in reality humans kill lions, that is why there are so few these days. Shouldn't the interviewer be concerned about the danger of humans then? I am aware that these animals are strong and they are no pets, however I don't think the interviewer understands why Kevin is doing this work in the first place. It is to protect lions from the dangerous humans.
