THE ART OF HERDING SHEEP with sheepdog Bruce | Ireland | Local Legends | Brad Leone

Let’s stop glorifying the GOATs… how about we celebrate the SHEEP and the DOG instead?! This Episode of Local Legends is all about the Art of Herding Sheep with my new friend, and certified Local Legend, Paddy Fanning.
Last August we visited Paddy in his hometown of Wicklow, Ireland to learn the basics of Sheepdog training, herding sheep, and to get a glimpse at this ancient art in person.
Check out Paddy and his pooches on the social medias:

And remember, it’s never too late to find something you love and make it your life, just like our lad Paddy

When I visited Ireland in the early 00s, I saw a man who trained his dogs like that to bring the sheep down from the hills. Each dog was trained for a different sound of whistles. It was so fascinating and fun to watch those dogs work. Even in the fog, when you couldn't really see where the sheep were at.

The farmers out here are feeding the world and are affected by everything from weather/climate impacts and social and political issues. The more understanding people have on what it takes to get the food on the table the more we will appreciate the hard work and resources that go into it!

Could not agree more if I tried, you really hit the nail on the head. What a beautiful sight to behold, especially when you've got these a-holes running around a show ring with dogs who commentators describe as fit for function when in fact the poor dogs wouldn't be able to do a thing with the brain and body these horrible people have designed to try and win ribbons and trophies. I truly feel sorry for those poor unfortunate dogs.

You and the team have hit on some magic here Brad. There's an ill-defined border between sterile documentary and engaging IRL travel/cooking, and it's frankly shocking that you've managed to strike that golden balance so quickly in your solo venture. Mad props to you and your team, because you're maybe one of the most videogenic individuals alive, but without that team putting you in the right places with the right camera operators and the right people of interest, all that charisma doesn't do much. Hope you guys can keep it up for a good long while!

Great video. We own a border jack, but she's definitely is more border collie than jack russell. But she the smartest dog I have ever owned. She knows more words than some people I know. I think she missed her calling as a drug sniffing dog, because she track and smell like nothing I've seen. She has been our faithful companion as we travel around North America.

Fantastic! Had a Border Collie cross breed back in the 90's that could have escaped from bloody Alcatraz. Came home from work several times to find him out and about, "herding" the elementary school kids into two groups--one on each side of the street. Kids were laughing their asses off and trying to outsmart him. Mortified me (because WTF--parents are weird) and then I figured out that when the kids held their area, Wiley would run up to them and lay down. And get scratched up and belly rubbed. The damned dog trained the kids to give him belly rubs! Miss that mutt.

Im always so happy for breeds like border collies that actually get to work the way they were bred instead of being cooped up in a small yard or apartment. When I lived in Ireland, there were always loose dogs on the roads and the worst were the border collies because they'd try to chase the cars. I was always so worried Id hit them when they'd dart out of their yard after me.

Was staying in east Donegal neighbour had a couple collies I called Cheech and Chong cheeky feckers always shitein in our boarders. Just put some pieces of whitethorn down, didn't happen again. Neighbour obviously a younger son as didn't get the farm, but one day brought back a couple of orphaned lamb and just had them penned on the shared green (can;t complain he cut the grass for free), I think to teach his son. They were there for months beetling at everything that moved including crows. Fun times.
