The Art of Farming
It's a very hot day. Hilarie and I have to move the laying hens and cattle, and check in with the pigs. Afterwards, I take a walk to see how each of the fields is growing, and explain how I maintain pasture health during the heat of summer. Farming is an art as much as a science or a brute attitude with big machinery, and the decisions I make regarding how the animals are pastured, when to make hay, and when to clip fields are based on experience and judgement more than anything.

Hello Pete. You deserve a medal, why? Because you are "out standing" in your field! 😀
Your pigs have such a great disposition about them. Hands on makes all the difference. I don’t think the deer joke was too awful, thanks for bringing them back 😂 Stay cool this week! Thanks for the video.

Are you kidding the deer joke was terrible 😭😭
Patty the Union Rep standing by you airing her opinion while the rest of the herd is standing on the hill under the trees enjoying the breeze backing her up. Patty cracks me up. Will be interesting to see the amount of improvement of grass in the problem field next year after heavy manure application this year.
I love the way you share your thoughts on your farm and the decisions you need to make. Lots of work. Thanks, Pete, for the calming way you talk to us.
Wow, I can’t believe how much Billy has grown, he’s huge!
I am just in the first stages of developing my rural homestead. Not much pasture, if any, but I am learning a lot from watching how you approach your grass management. Thank you for explaining everything so well.

Pete is an expert on grass land stewardship. Don't think you could find a better mentor that is willing to come to you :)
You are the best! You always make my day watching the things you do! You have a beautiful family, may God Bless everyone of you!
Those darn cluckers just don't appreciate all of the hard work that you put into repairing their ramp!! They broke it again immediately!! The nerve?! 😂😂
I love watching the chickens cut a new rug.
My small vegetable garden does whatever it wants to, depending upon Mother Nature. It’s always a decision about putting on the shade covers or the plastic to protect it from too much rain. Then there is the matter of outwitting the bugs. It’s never the same and whatever food it offers is always a treat. The antique machine show sounds like fun. Enjoy.
One of the main reasons I have subscribed to your channel is for the intellectual aspect. I am a systems engineer who works on IT systems every day. But, I grew up in the farmland of the Midwest. So, I have a connection to farming. I never realized all of the systems involved in running a farm! I just assumed the farmers let he cows go where they would within the fences. Your channel has been a true blessing to me.
The half century of progress show is well worth it.
The deer didn't go to waste, very good thing!
Already shared that joke! I laughed out loud! I am glad to see the fields thriving, love hearing the cows talking, right on cue, The clucker section is looking great and the pigs have their own thing going on Looking forward to your road trip. Thank you
I started raising some bottle calves a few years ago and noticed that they didn’t really like the old tall grass, but loved when the grass got cut for hay and the new stuff grew back.
Thank you for the great video. I’m in Arkansas and have cancer your videos made me feel at home. Thanks 😇🚜
Loved the hym-a-laying deer stake dad joke. the chickens and pigs and the cows are really looking great. enjoyed the video, and hope that you all have a great week end.
I love getting up in the morning and pouring my first cup of coffee and watching you show the love you have for your animals. Having lived and worked on a farm for 5 years in Kentucky it brings back such wonderful memories. Thanks so much!
Don’t change anything about producing and editing your videos. They are always entertaining, relaxing, educational and sometimes even funny. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for letting us drop by for a fun visit.
5:37 actually I liked that one. 😂😂
Cluckers going on vacation with the travel trailer, moving on to greener pastures!
Thank you guys for your channel. My wife and I enjoy watching each and every video when they come out. Your light hearted, and insightful videos bring us joy. We wish you continued happiness, and prosperity.
Thank you Pete and Hilary! You are brave enough to show the authentic and complete person that you are. You are deep enough to share your philosophical beliefs, the reality of running a farm , with a gift for connecting with people. Hilary has got a million dollar smile that will outshine all dark clouds. Love your dad jokes. I volunteer musical concerts weekly at nursing homes and I have stolen many of your jokes! Keep on trucking
'Himalayin' deer steak... Dad that was bad! Thank you for being funny." The things that make our daughters laugh are a priceless commodity. Thank you for the video
🤣Love the ramp repair. Ye might say, farming is like improvisational jazz. 😁 Thank you for the invaluable insights into pasture. Very much appreciated.
I agree 100% with the weather. I never really paid that much attention that closely until I started making hay.
Excited to hear you are going to Rantoul. We live 30 minutes from there and enjoy your Channel. We aren’t farmers but gardeners with bees and chickens and raised beds for vegetables. 60 year old fans of yours
Thank you for the Himalayin' joke that made me literally snort out loud. That was the icing on the cake of your wonderful video Pete. That and the way you made Hilary roll her eyes at your brain burning crack made the whole show sparkle with delight and a hog heaven, cow tootin' good time. Loved learning more about how you view the grass and how you make decisions regarding the fields, having the seasons, and all the many ways to make your cattle, hogs and chickens happier and as content as possible. Love the way you love farming, it makes me yern to be in that life as well, as I'm sure it does so many other people who watch you. Humans are farmers at heart anyway, we were put on this earth to take care of the nature God gave us and the natural way you go about it pulls on those natural instincts inside all of us. Thank you for sharing your gift of gab and wisdom of nature... and even your wonderfully bad jokes. I needed a good snort today.
Wow, can’t get over how big Billy has grown. Thanks for another great video.
Liked the nice touch on the ramp repair.😂
Pete is so wholesome I love it, keep it up
Love the jokes. You and Hilary are great people that I enjoy watching very much. It’s a learning experience that seems very comfortable and honest. My wife & I did our 31 years at the office and now we have started our farm on 170 acres. Keep up the great work!
I only just realised an entire generation of pigs passed since I started watching this channel. When I first got here the pigs were called Missy, Red and John if I'm not mistaken...
Damn, don't we love Billy. He's wonderful
Nice to see the west coast represented by tee shirts. Thanks Hilarie!
Always enjoyable and informative Pete, thank you!
Good morning Kluckers and family! Since watching you Pete I spend more time talking to our Yorkie Cairn terrier. Enjoy listening to the details of the fields and grasses. I would say that the art of farming is paying attention to the details. Hope you, Hillary, family, farm and Kluckers have a great week.
Him-a-laying, it took me a second, cracked me up. Thanks for a look around the farm. 👍
I love the egg mobile -- it makes me think of "The Partridge Family - 50 years later" 🙂
When moving the chicken tractor/house you could hear the old rooster was loudly crowing and the hens were wildly flapping to the shifting hen house instead of "Ya-hoo!" Great way to start the morning that ended up in a greener chicken run. The cows gather for their early morning meeting and roll call under the Elm tree. Patty chairs this meeting. Seems like two of them were missing.
I call my new garden my experiment and learning from doing. Same with my chickens. It's hard work. Hope you and your critters do well.
Hello Pete and Hillary! Your videos are always a real palate cleanser in today's world. I finished this week viewing the complete catalog back to the beginning of your channel, now I will just have to be content with viewing the new videos as they appear. I really enjoy my visits to the farm, thanks for sharing...
One consideration regarding markedly reducing the monsters is what percantage of your KZread income is actually derived from people essentially clicking because of them and their antics. I, for one, love love love your pigs and all the associated drama and minutiae involved.
These guys are so very lucky to have you and Hilarie. Nice food and a great way of life. It’s hot here too. Bossy pig looks good too. I love Brownie. Makes good sense concerning the pigs. A person can only spend so much time with each area of livestock. Hope the day is good Pete.
Good morning chickens 😊... Love watching them come shooting out of the trailer
Watching that hen trying to go back up the ramp made me laugh😂
Omg the Himalayan deer made my day!!! Needed a good laugh, thanks Pete!!!!
Hey my wife works for the city we tagged 4 deer last year that way. Just happen to get there right after they were hit. But they were not torn up bad saved most of the meat.
What I've learned from your videos is that pigs grow so fast!
9:33 we used tons of fertilizer every year and re-seeded every year. The grass was 4-6 feet tall but all the chemicals. Those fertilizers were very expensive. But the farm was just a tax right off I found out years later. It was always in the red and belonged to a billionaire that got a lot of tax breaks for a farm that was struggling to make it. It’s all gone now. I miss that place. Your doing it right Pete, love your philosophy on farming.
Wow Pete! You keep putting out these butt kicking videos. You make us feel like your farm is our farm. Keep the jokes coming!!
That was a gooden laugh, usually they are too dry, but that hit the spot...hahahahahh. Ps. they care you and Hillary show your animals is terrific!! Love your channel.
Hay pete always a pleasure seeing you and your wife work together around your farm i know you said you were not going to raise a big quantity of pigs but you did such a great job raising them just wondering if you ever going to change your mind anyways im sure you have your reasons thank you for sharing pete
Pete, your jokes are so bad they are hilarious. Keep it up , it's great. Hillary you are a saint no doubt, love you both, take care and please keep sharing.
Watching this episode from Bulgaria 🍾
I do enjoy and appreciate the way you approach your videos. I believe your production staff, videographers and cameramen not to mention the lighting and audio departments are by far some of the best on utube. You have a hit on your hands. Almost forgot the writers of your jokes are getting better and could still use some more practice. From hot in Phoenix thank you for making my day. Bob😊
That's what I like about your channel, you educate us non farmers and show us the way you do your stuff. Very interesting and educational. Thanks.
I follow many types of content but your channel is by far my favorite.
Hi Pete and Hillary, Thanks for another wonderful video and a mention of the letter from Ireland. Best wishes - Paul Moloney, Ireland,
Art of relaxed farming.....you all are living my dream...
Really enjoyed your explanation of your pastures and your decisions of grazing vs. Haying. Thanks..
It's a ballet, Pete, and you are the orchestrator! It's FUN, too, ain't it?!? I get just as much fulfillment now as we've aged out of the new challenge of seeing how much of the macro we can put into what's truly micro on the .92 acres we live on now. Yes, I get to stretch my legs with my special needs guys on the school farm and helping other homesteaders get going and that's fine, but you're SO right! The mental challenge of seeing how much can be produced on nurtured land is what gets me up in the morning! We had a "field day" here at the home place back in the fall and it was standing room only.... I LOVE it!
I know you have been told this before but I still had too! The cows always tell you they want "MMOOOOOOVED". 😊
So excited you are coming closer to our area. Looks like the show in August is about 3hrs from us - BUT - they offer dry camping so we're making plans.........Thanks for the Heads Up on this one Pete. Take care!!
As always Pete, thank you.
Another great enjoyable video Pete, like a lot of other viewers I enjoy listening to your comments about your fields and hay. Back in 1975 there was a great drought out west they were in dire need of Hay for all the cattle. I and a lot of other dealers were buying hay in and all around your area. from Rochester to Govenor, to finger lakes area. weedsport. Cicero. etc and trucking down to the rail yards in Amsterdam and unloading it onto rail cars to go out west. I myself bought and hauled over 20 thousand bales of great quality hay. mostly good Timothy Alphalfa mix Lots of Tree foil in some loads also. made a lot of good friends back then miss the farmers. and all associated with it. Just turned 80 and enjoying my retirement watching Just a few Acres Farm. Thanks for sharing Pete. ECF
You are a blessing! Thanks for sharing your farming journey.
1:11 the look of a man who knows the secrets to a happy life
Hi Pete, enjoy your videos tremendously. I live on a cattle ranch in Ecuador.
Thanks for the dad joke... Ive been missing them.
HAHA!! Him-a-layin. I laughed!
Thanks Pete and Hillary 😊
Just checked, the Illinois show is a 3 hour drive for me. I'll check with wife, we might come out to see you. We bought our truck just south of there in Champaign. My Henry (7 yr old) can say hi to your Henry.
Yes !!! The bad dad jokes are back. That’s great! Thanks
Him-a-layin-in-the-road. Man my stomach hurts, that was a good one haha
Love your show. And your jokes! God bless ya
Your page is excellent. I look forward to it every week.
Your way of farming using your intellect and nature observation is more successful than most others I watch. I find myself saying," no, you do not want to do that, you will destroy your ecosystem" at others, but never at what you say and do. My wish is that your pigs would be able to get more natural sunshine Like the two sweet little piglets. But I realize how unrealistic that is...unless you could let them out in your pasture which they would make a mess of in no time!!! Love you videos, keep them coming! Love how your cows "talk" to you!

I’m pretty sure he’s got little doggie doors where the pigs can go outside at will. At least in some of the stalls. I remember him shoveling out the muck they dragged inside. To be honest, the weather in this area is either so hot or so cold most animals prefer to be inside out of the hot sunlight (or the cold wind in winter) anyways most of the time. Look at his cows, they have all that green pasture and they’re huddled up on a mud patch in the shade because of the heat. Central New York pretty much only has a month or two of nice weather in the autumn and sometimes in the spring.
That Deer Joke....Oh Dear....Roadkill: From your grill to ours.
Going to Rantoul? I lived there from 01/1972: thru 12/1974 at the old Chanute AFB during some of my teen years. Dad was stationed there with the USAF making training films for the tech school. Many great memories. Have a great time!
Hallelujah for Hillary and Pete ! ❤
Billy is the Star, great looking and friendly hog
Lol! That first shot of JJ in the mud almost looked like a black and white picture aside from the red barn and green leaves on the bushes!!
Pete, I love the way you and Hillarie farm. I love seeing the calves out in the field following their mamas. It breaks my heart when I drive by a dairy farm and see all the little calves penned into what are basically big dog houses and they don't get to be with their mamas. Loved hearing your thoughts on haying and grazing, always love seeing the animals, and of course... gotta love the Himalayan joke! 😂
Farming is fun ❤😊
Your jokes are always a hoot 😂😂😂 keep up the god work my friend.
Those girls are happy happy. Lots to cluck and scratch over 😂
Thanks for another great video Pete.
Thank you Pete for your insight and experience.
Hey Pete! Thanks for this video. So much information! God bless you and the family and the farm!!
Been waiting for a dad joke. Using this one tomorrow at work. :)
haha i laughted at that himalayan joke
Hurrah! Along with the Farmer's Boot adage, the other is: 'A Farmer farms as though he's going to live forever. And lives as though he's going to die tomorrow.' Catch the day!
Thanks Pete, always a pleasure.
Great video Pete. Your deer steak joke made me laugh. 👍👍
Thanks for the video. Always a pleasure to watch. All the best 🇬🇧.
