The Aragoto Masterpiece EXPLAINED・Shibaraku (1697)

Ойын-сауық

The kabuki play Shibaraku ("Wait a Moment!") was first staged by Ichikawa Danjūrō I at the Nakamura-za theatre in Edo, and represents the greatest surviving example of aragoto drama. Let's have a look at its plot and some of the main elements!
Since the beginning of the Heisei period in 1989, there has been only 14 performances of Shibaraku, 4 by Ichikawa Danjūrō XII, 6 by his son, Ichikawa Ebizō XI, 2 by Onoe Shōroku IV (as part of productions of Gohiiki Kanjinchō), 1 by Ichikawa Uzaemon XVII (in 1993) and 1 by Matsumoto Kōshirō IX (in 1991).
You can read an english translation of this play in the book "Kabuki Plays on Stage Vol 1: Brilliance and Bravado", and find more information in kabuki21: www.kabuki21.com/shibaraku.php

As requested by many of you, I'll cover the plot of some of the most important plays from the kabuki repertoire and explain some of the most basic concepts. I hope you enjoy them and it is not too bothersome for the people already familiar with them!

Yes, it is a truly fascinating parody, full of the unmistakable humor of Edo! I briefly mention it at the end of this video.

Hi Kabuki In-Depth, I am a huge fan and supporter of your amazing channel and I absolutely love and can't get enough of your superb content! Thank you so much on the behalf of everyone for creating such high quality content for English speaking individuals and giving us a chance to enjoy and indulge in the world of Kabuki too. I'm a beginner in the Japanese language and my ability to understand the intricate and complex dialogue with the rich vocabulary used is relatively poor. Is there a way I can find full Kabuki plays online that are subbed in English? Would you also be able to upload full kabuki plays that are subbed? Thank you for your time!

I appreciate very much your support! Other channels have tried to present full kabuki plays, but sooner or later they are taken down due to copyright claims. Hopefully Shochiku releases some kind of streaming service in the future, but for now the best we can do on KZread is to give a glimpse into these beautiful plays. We have a small collection of black & white performances, though, and I would love to subtitle some of them in the future if I find the time. Good luck with the language by the way!

It's also rare and amazing to hear it spoken in English! but still in the same stylized way, revealing the unusualness vs standard speech.

Initially, the ancestors were women who gave birth to this discipline, then women pushed it to its glory. However, after that, women were banned from working in the very field that they were born in and dedicated to, so now fame and position are reserved for men, how bitter is this gender prejudice in Japanese culture in particular and East Asian culture in general.

Outfits outstanding. But acting and music just too calm, too sleepy. If you like it, OK, but so far I am not a fan of the Kabuki. Maybe I am not an expert but such theaters need to be made in a way, you could figure out the plot even if you are foreigner. Or at least be entertained.
