What a pathetic comment in the end. Natural gut is still one of the most popular strings on the pro tour, especially (almost if not entirely exclusively) combined with polyester in a hybrid setup. Natural gut has always been made from cow intestines, no cats have ever been involved and "cat gut" is just a stupid name, really.

I saw somewhere recently it's short for "cattle" gut. Not sure how true that is.

Tennis gut strings also used to be made from sheep intestines but haven't been for many years

Calm down. Actually Babolat used sheep in the 70s and into the 80s (I believe), moving onto cow intestines as the size of racquets grew. I think I’ve heard that it takes 2 cows per set/racquet ? Whilst the question from the presenter was indeed poor; it’s actually quite a common misconception. ‘Catgut’ , whilst not really a term used in tennis anymore (natural gut, obvs), it is still a common term in other string worlds applications - violins, fishing and sutures still sometimes refer to ‘catgut’, even though none of them ever actually used cats.
