The Antidote to Pakistan's Identity Crisis - Pervez Hoodbhoy & Nawfal Saleemi

"The Antidote to Pakistan's Identity Crisis - Pervez Hoodbhoy & Nawfal Saleemi"
Pakistan came into being amidst the cataclysmic partition of India. This country had been demanded Muslims living in Muslim majority areas of North-Western and North-Eastern parts of India. However, it soon became clear that the regions that came to constitute Pakistan included many diverse people with varying beliefs, languages, and cultural heritage.
Despite this, the predominantly Punjabi military-bureaucratic state forcefully tried to assert a particular strand of identity on its people that revolved around Islam. This alone proved to be insufficient in terms of a project of nation-building, evident in the rejection of this monolithic project by people from Bengal, Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Pakistan's ruling elites continue to look towards other nations and cultures for a story of our own identity, borrowing from Arabs to Turks, this project will continue to fail till such a time when the Pakistani project of identity is rooted in its own soil, history, heritage, and diversity.
Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy is Pakistan's foremost public intellectual as well as a renowned physicist and academic.
M. Nawfal Saleemi is a student, researcher, and progressive political activist.
#PervezHoodhboy #PervezHoodbhoyOfficial #PakistanIdentityCrisis
Thank you for all your comments and thoughts, it is a great pleasure that the audience is actively participating in the discussions.

As an Indian, I'm very impressed at the self reflection both the host and the guest have showcased regarding the origins and realities of Pakistan. This kind of rational cogitation is what, in my opinion, will build a sense of nationhood within Pakistan, and normalise it's relations with its neighbours, especially India.

And you have not yet formally apologized to the state for the Bengali genocide and rape and injustice. Forgiveness is a great virtue. And it is possible to be holy by asking for pure forgiveness. And forgiving someone is also a great virtue. Besides, to be honest, you have yet to establish a full-fledged state. The consequence of discrimination will always be counter discrimination, hatred begets hatred. So, people should contemplate the possibility of expunging this word Kafir and make it a criminal offence to use that word. Without a solution to this issue, no Islamic society will have peace or will they have the moral high ground to accuse others of phobia or discrimination.

Hatred is further legitimised in the scripture with such derogatory terms such as "Kafir" The question is : Why even such a word as Kafir should exist in a holy scripture, is God discriminatory ? It is a sign of the times we live in that this discussion took place between these two gentlemen. Three decades back, it may have been deemed blasphemous. Six decades ago, they could have been arrested for offence to state and faith. In his book 'Among the believers', Sir V S Naipaul states that Islam demands that the convert forego all ties with his past. Having seen the light, the past of darkness must be abandoned. From that perspective, Pakistan has done no wrong. Yet, it is one's past and pride thereof that prepares one for the future. Pakistan has disowned it's past, is uneasy about it's present and unsure of it's future. That's not a very happy place to be in.

One of the often repeated mistaken assumption in world history is, thinking that religion is binding factor for humans. It’s not. In Sri Lanka when Sinhalese language was made national language, Tamil speaking population fought against it. A Tamil MP asked a question National Assembly -“Do you want two language, one nation or one language two nation”. It was for very this reason in India, we don’t have one single language as national language. We have 22 scheduled languages, because founding fathers of India knew how much emotional people are about their mother tongue. As Hindu Kannadiga from South India, I can connect better with a Kannada speaking Christian/Muslim than with a Hindi speaking Hindu. Religion is overrated!! Mind you, don't think that Indians are divided linguistically. Nothing from the farther from truth.

Religious nationalism is a poisonous mix which can undo the nation. Modern and democratic nation states are home to several religious groups. The way forward for humanity is to build nation states based on rule of law and civil liberties protected by an independent and secular jurisprudence and not based on any religious laws. My deep appreciation for Prof. Pervez Hoodbhoy and also the anchor who asked very relevant questions.
