Narco Bob it’s tragic really how many parrots are neglected. People have no clue the dedication and constant interaction these birds require to stay sane. This is nothing like owning a dog or a cat. Your bird will destroy itself and make your life a living hell if its social and emotional needs aren’t met.

Yes, thank you for saying/sharing this. The implication (I gathered) that the prior owner was holding onto him until he got cash for Max, from whomever...meanwhile being so frustrated and unable to cope with Max's anguished screams that he was letting anger out at Max to the point of considerably denting the metal cage he was locked in, rather than taking responsibility for creating the situation and making basic sacrifices like time and $ to keep him safe...fills me with so much sorrow and fury. Once a human has decided to be responsible for an animal's life, their own whims and desires are now at the mercy of this experience and all of the possible outcomes given the species' lifespan, needs, and range of behaviors living in captive situations with humans. 🙏

You had me at "I'd prefer that people don't send us donations because we're ok and I'd rather they sent the money to a foundation that cares for birds". On a platform where so many are out for themselves, this is very comforting to hear. Bravo! :) I've worked as a volunteer wildlife rescuer in my free time for a long time and it's heart warming to see the amount of care and devotion you exhibit towards your little friend. Sending you very positive vibes! :)
the sweetest thing is him whispering back to you. One of my cats has PTSD from a former abusive boyfriend and he has nightmares. He growls and cries in his sleep so from a little distance (without touching him) I say out loud "it's mommy, it's okay, Peanut wake up". Once he wakes up and realizes that I'm calling to him then he's okay. It's terrible that our animal babies go through this but it's comforting to know that we can help them :)

So lucky! I'm in Perth, we're getting the rainbow lorikeet's atm, in our bottlebrush trees along with the year-round crowd of red wattlers. Sometimes I see butcher birds (their one of my faves) and I even saw a sacred kingfisher in Summer last year, just sitting above our two bird baths, looking gorgeous. We also saw 3 kookaburra's on the pagoda outside out house, one suddenly swooped down into the bushes and picked up a rat for a meal! It was incredible! He kept whacking its head on the wood, even though it was already dead! We have a bit of a rat problem here, but we do get the southern bookbook at night, helps to mitigate their numbers. Thanks for sharing! I only wish our local birds would come down to eye-level a bit more, but they tend to do that when summer arrives, playing, bathing and drinking from the bird baths we have.

You are so kind and patient with him It is relaxing to me to watch your videos. It is good that you mention that you cannot be gone from home for long or often because of being responsible for him. That is quite a commitment.
Max certainly found his way to the right human! For someone who never planned on having a parrot, and didn't know the first thing about Cockatoos, it seems he found his way into the life of someone who didn't know he NEEDED a Max. Your care for Max is so obvious. I've seen people who declare themselves bird people, who don't take care of their birds the way you take care of Max! I know you did this video awhile back, but I didn't find you until this past year. My husband died last April, and I started watching KZread videos. I hadn't had a bird since my kids left home, and hadn't even considered it - until I stumbled on a few bird channels - yours being one of them. I started wanting to have another bird last October. It's April 13, 2020, and I've had my Quaker for almost a month and half! In watching these KZread videos I learned about the Parrot Crisis - back when I had birds before that was totally unheard of. ,Although it seems that every animal I ever had while my kids were growing up was one that someone else couldn't keep! When you hit the question about a significant other your answer sounded like you've counted that out forever. I understand there are some people who are just built that way, but I would say that you appear to be fairly young (compared to me, at least), and it wouldn't surprise me to see the right person find their way into your life at the right time. That isn't something you have to give up on just because you allowed Max to come into your life. I know, I know - sticking my nose where it doesn't belong. I'm sorry - I guess it's just the mother/grandmother in me. But you just seem to be a wonderful gift that Max stumbled on, And you deserve to have a life that is as fulfilled as the life you have provided for Max. You ARE an inspiration! Thank you! 💖💝♥️

Your commitment to this bird is absolutely beautiful! I have a house of birds as well.. Both my cockatoos are rescues and over 40 years old.. It is good to see a Moluccan fully feathered and looking so happy!
Max is one lucky bird. You're a great birdy daddy.
Max is sweet! Thank you for taking on such a huge responsibility! 🕊

dude, you are the COOOLEST dad in the world; i'm too old or we would get a bird, too; great job!
You're a genuinely kind-hearted person. Thank you for that. Max is a lucky little bird.
Have you looked at the flight suit? It does not go over the birds head, they step into it and put their wings through and it Velcro’s at the back. A trained to rescue cockatiels to use them and they did very well.
Having adopted a male Elanora cockatoo around 20 years ago, I can emphasize with you. Permanent toddlers, tantrums and all. You are amazing, kind human being. Max is a lucky boy to have found you.
Anyone considering anything beyond a Budgie should watch this video... taking on such an intelligent long lived species is a lifelong dedication that will change many aspects of your life. Fantastic video.

Ive watched this particular few times. While I can only speak for myself, at 53 years old, and basically content single, after relationships that I poured my heart and sole into only for them to having turned out to be nothing more than emotional learning experiences, I now ACCEPT and LOVE the fact that my best "long term" relationships are those I have with dogs. Senior dogs at that. You know what Dan - if this is all God planned for me - my role in this big cruel world, I'm damn well blessed and one of the luckiest women on planet Earth. I love your videos. I love you and Max. You two guys are more than a girl could ask for. Thank you for brightening up my little world.
❤ 🥰 To Dan Re your description of Max getting upset or scared or possibly bad dreams when sleeping.... You said you go to him & quietly calm him , "it will be okay" & he repeats that back to you. One of the kindest things I've ever heard described; & his response -- so lovely

Your attitude to your (& Max's) personal privacy is both admirable and refreshingly different from most individuals who post on the InterWebNet. You're a Fine Man sir and your commitment to Max and his health and happiness sets an example to us all. Max, on the other hand, is one screw short of a nutjob ... exactly the way a Moluccan ought to be. I can't tell you how hard I've laughed at your videos - you both bring a LOT of joy to the world. Thanks for sharing your life with Max, he is loved, he is so funny and makes my day. The vet video is hilarious, flapping his wings as if to say “no vet is cutting my nails today, I’m not going” and runs up the steps, so funny. 😁
I to have a feathered three year old. He adopted me almost 15 years ago. If you accept their friendship it's a lifetime commitment. I'm so lucky that I've been able to be with my little friend just about everyday since I've had him. He is amazing. His vocabulary is amazing in and of itself. God Bless you, Dan, for respecting the needs of Max before everything else. You are his Daddy.
I grew up with these birds. They require extreme dedication and care. They live incredibly long and you need to be sure someone whome they know will take care of them when you are gone. They dont call them the velcro bird for nothing! They will self mutilate, and yes they are loud! Imagine having a needy toddler for 60 plus years, well that's a cockatoo. They are not for everyone and I personally think most people should not own them because they often get neglected and mistreated, even by those with the best intentions. I think Max owner is doing an incredible job and I am so so grateful for people like you. Max is so handsome and healthy looking... love his cocka-tude....and boy do they all have one. Well done sir. Live your channel
We have an umbrella cockatoo name Angel and she is spoiled just like Max. Angel’s favorite food is cornbread.
You are one of the kindest people I have ever seen. Not only did you take on a massive responsibility that you weren't even looking for to save this birds life, but I love how you said that people should donate to charity and adopt birds instead of promoting their breeding. Max is one lucky fella and you saved his life.
“He hated him, bit his feet and screamed for 24 hours a day” 😂. Bless you for caring for him!
Max really is like a child, with babysitters and I love that the parents come watch him

All parrots are a lot of work; they really belong IN THE WILD. Unlike other animals, PARROTS ARE NOT DOMESTICATED. They are WILD ANIMALS. That's one reason why people find them so difficult to deal with. It takes a lot of dedication to live with a parrot properly. You have to absolutely ADORE THEM your whole life. Of the three parrot families (the others are parakeets -- that's a family, not a species -- and true parrots) the cockatoo family is the most challenging to live with. I actually wrote a book introducing people considering life with cockatiel cockatoos called "Preparing for My First Cockatiel." This is my life's passion and I'm proud to say both my cockatiels are very happy girls -- well except for they both want to get married.
Just bonding with any bird, cat or any different animal is just a gift of life.Once in a lifetime a special love that will be with you forever. You’re a great Dad.
We have a 17 year old Senegal parrot (who we have had since he was a hatchling) who may live to be 50. We have instructions in our will for him to go to the Parrot Sanctuary in Louisa, Virginia. I'm happy to tell you more about it if it would serve you. It gave us great peace of mind. Thank you for knowing that these wonderful intelligent companions are a life long relationship. They are flock animals and so are we! They teach us as much as we teach them.

Thank you for all of that. I had to do the same by researching so I did the right things. I sure learned a lot when I did and still after 14 yrs, will research anything questionable. I would hate to have harmed either bird. On a personal note, what a wonderful human you are. Seriously. I got sad when you told your rescue story. I don't understand cruelty, especially to animals. I'm so happy you got him. And I can tell you adore each other ❤ Thank you for sharing.
I'll be adopting a 3 year old Sun Conure on Saturday. Sadly I'll be his 3rd home. But good news for him is this will be his forever home. I'm too old to get another cockatoo. As much as I'd love to. I had a Peach Fronted Conure and I was also his third home. But it was love at first sight for both of us. He also was not a “planned bird” for me either. He was pretty much abandon and if it weren’t for me I have no clue where he would have ended up. He lived with me for 10 years before he passed away in June of 2017. He was my soul mate and I miss him every second of every day. He was lots of work but was worth it. Enjoy your new friend!! 💜💜❤️❤️

Thank you so much for adopting that little one and I hope everything is ok. I adopted a green cheek conure (Isabel, now approx. 16 y/o) from one of my daughter's teachers many years ago. The teacher's teenage daughter kept throwing things at the bird everytime she made a noise, so I was asked if I could take her. Poor Isabel was traumatized and has never stopped being agressive, but she is in a loving home and seems happy living next to my Yellow Nape Amazon.

@@FranklinXVI conures might be small, but they are not the " quieter " bird. They can scream like crazy if they don't get the attention and care they need. If you want a quieter bird, take a cockatiel or quaker parrot.
I know this is not new, and I know it's just cause people want to interact with Max, but it's crazy how hard a time people have understanding personal information and privacy!! Crazy!!
My “max” is now a very old boy. We got him when a neighbor couldn’t take care of him anymore. We think he was around 20 years old at the time. Now that was over 45 years ago! Of course we got him when I was very young. I’m now 50 and Cocko is still going strong. Have you ever tried to give Max liquid from a teaspoon? Cocko loves a little beer from a teaspoon occasionally. He also loves a little buttered toast every now and again.
Max is a gem. And his person is terrific. A dedicated bird person.

I have a 19 year old Molluccan named Einstein. I've had him since he was a baby, brought him home at 3 1/2 months old from Wingsong aviary in Amherst, New Hampshire. His birthday is April 12th, same as my daughter's and my Siberian husky Zoey. He's super social, has ridden in my car with me for miles, visiting, traveling, moving from the East coast to the Midwest, where I'm from originally.

"Wingsong" in Amherst is where my aunt got her blue-headed Paonis? Parrot, she named Stinky! What a wonderful place that is! They are very careful about who adopts birds from their shop. Stinky got his name because she hand raised him and he stunk. LOL She also had 4 dogs and Stinky thought he was one too by the way he acted, following them around and harassing the poor cat. He even barked when the other dogs did!! :D When someone would come to the door, all the dogs AND Stinky would run into the kitchen to the door barking all the way. Stinky barked like the Chihuahua/Yorkie mix my cousin had and the other dogs were Cocker Spaniels, which apparently he decided he didn't care to imitate. The dogs would go to the door to see who it was, and then turn and run back into the living room, but they were on their way back and Stinky hadn't quite made it to the kitchen yet but was running frantically to catch up. So the dogs would stamped by Stinky who was now going in the wrong direction, and Stinky would turn around and run back behind them. And so it went every time anyone came to the door. Such a comical sight! Unfortunately, my aunt had to find Stinky a new home due to unforeseen and uncontrollable circumstances, she gave him to one of her friends who had an aviary in her home, and she was very knowledgeable about birds. She was heartbroken to have to give him up, but it was what was best for Stinky that mattered.
It's so amazing to see the special bond you have with Max and the devotion you have to this smart animal is truly admirable.
