Hong Kong was mostly a small fishing community before becoming the "Pearl of the Orient". The last jewel in the crown of the British Empire, Hong Kong became a massive financial and trade centre between the 50s and 80s. Hong Kong is now a Special Administrative Region of China, and will remain so until 2047. Find out how this baron rocky area became catapulted to world prominence.

Alan Tan Also. Just remember the Mao once says that the party will not give up it’s power without a war ( or something like that). And that could be easily seen during the Tiananmen Square protests , which the peaceful Chinese protesters get crushed by tanks and shot by machine guns by the “ People’s Libration Army” which should protect its people

1:36 The opium trade, which should have been mentioned, was the issues that led to the Opium Wars. The mass introduction of opium from the British East India Company (BEIC) was illegal according to Qing law, but was still accepted by Chinese merchants due to it being a lucrative trade product despite it being an illicit and illegal drug. The thing about BEIC opium was that it was better quality than domestic versions and became highly prized. This led to Qing officials to begin taking action and they confiscated the opium found that British merchants were importing and burned it all. British merchants were able to lobby their government to get compensation (opium is also illegal in Britain, so this was very hypocritical) and the British sent their navy and after failed negotiations, war occurred. The rest of course is history. 4:38 Most likely, Hong Kong will have a similar fate as Shanghai or Tianjin and become some form of municipality region that has direct control from the central government.

It’s strange how i dont see any comments criticising the UK for trying to sell the Chinese opium, a drug which was, even then, banned in the UK. Future British prime minister William Gladstone criticised this move in parliament, but the british went with it anyway. What the brits did then was repulsive.

Well great job, but you missed a whole bunch of stuff. 2003 SARS which HK took really badly, the leader of the Chinese revolution against the dynasty was set up in Hong Kong periodically, and you mentioned to rapid industrialization, but not the change from factories to pretty much only finance and business, becuase even in 2001 the tertiary industry was already 85.6% of the GDP in HK, with the rest being the secondary industry, unless you want to count the 0.1% GDP taken by the primary industry. And that change just never stopped. Also, I don't know if the major amount of protest happened yet when you made this video, but a bunch of protests happens as the protesters claim HK was being taken over by China by a few laws implemented. And then covid came, which you wouldn't have known. Anyway, great video, just mentioning a few things you missed.

For a 5 mins video that is pretty awesome! and could you please maybe release some kind of new video about Hong Kong's near history? 'Cause, we all know that after China's opening and reforming policy in 1978, China had helped Hong Kong a lot in Finance, especially during the period of the financial crisis. And more or less, maybe a little bit about the terrorism originated by the legislation of the security law in Hong Kong? Thanks~ I think that will help people to get a better understanding of the relationship between Hong Kong and mainland China.
