    Thanks for all the videos! I appreciate the plethora of knowledge and experience that you share with us. So how is the 80 -200 in low light or a concert type situation vs the Tameron? Or is there something else you would recommend?

    80 200 is better in low light, it has a LOT less glass elemenets 18 vs 23 80 200 is a damn TANK, and $600 used all day long it NOT as fast as the tamron, nor has VR, but i need NONE of that ,........however many DO need fast action VR

    How about the night concert photo? Would be Nikon 80-200 fine or the autofocus would be slow? Or should I try and hunt 70-200/2,8 VR I? Having issues sometimes with my AF-D 50mm/1,4. Still I really like the feel of AF-D lenses. Some nice old school feel there...

    I picked up an AF-S 80-200 f/2.8 and I absolutely love it. Took me trading in two different ones with KEH to get one that consistently auto-focused, though. Bit of vignetting wide open, but it's nice and sharp, even on a modern 24 MP FX sensor.

    I do have the Nikon 70-300VR and I love it! Got it off Ebay for about $300. But I sometimes would like to have something just a hair bigger for wildlife but I don't want to break the bank. My question is what is the quality of the Nikon 200-500 VR which sells around the $1300 range. Would it be worth having? Thanks. Duane

    I also think of those three lenses, the Tamron is the best choice for sports or auto photography...etc solely for it's auto-focus, but just want to know if suggesting it for it's VR/IS/OS support for moving objects was missing context, or if you had different testing experience.

    I haven't been able to use any of these lenses, but I do want to purchase a telephoto around the 70-200, 80-200 range, and it's essentially come down to these two (the VRII is just too much). I shoot mainly concerts with ZERO intention of shooting sports or wildlife. The concerts that I shoot typically have pretty fast moving performers but I wouldn't put it at the same level of "action" as say a racecar track. Have you found the 80-200 autofocus to be great in terms of accuracy and speed in low light?

    Hey. Always enjoy the videos. I've flirted with this lens before, but last night at an event at my kids' school was kind of the last straw for me with the venerable 18-200. f5.6 and high ISO for fast enough shutter makes for bad telephoto pictures. I saw another parent with a f2.8 zoom and was envious of what almost assuredly were better pictures. I still dream of a scaled down camera bag and have been flirting with the idea of the new 16-80f2.8-4 and then the older 80-200f2.8. I have a suspicion about what you think of the newer 16-80 ;) but want your take. Is my dream of two lenses to slay all dragons reasonable? Oh, I have a D7100 (just for reference, I have the 35mm f1.8, 60mm f2.8, 85mm f1.8, all of which I rarely use because the reality is that I need the flexibility of zooms given my subject matter is most often my kids and their friends. they aren't waiting around to wait for me to change lenses. I also have the 12-24mm f4 which I love and would keep regardless). Thanks as always!!!

    Sorry I should explain better. I have a 50MM which I would aim to use more for indoor people based family shots. And then the 300MM which I aim to use for sports and wildlife. Essentially I'm asking what you would recommend as a third lens. Something ideally with a zoom so it gives me more flexibility. The utility lens e.g. if I can only bring 1 for whatever reason. Thanks for your help.

    As an ultra versatile telephoto zoom I highly recommend the Nikkor 50-300mm 1:4.5 Auto if one doesn't mind manual focusing. Although there's lots of "evil" inside, the construction of this fine lens is awesome and it is a pleasure for street photography. Excellent handling and balance on a monopod! Great for perfect and accurate framing as this one slows you down a lot. The built quality is also marvellous, of course (70s!).

    Is the Nikkor 80-200mm auto focus significantly slower than the tamron 70-200? I don't need a extremely fast autofocus, but it's important. I'm an aviation photographer. Also, are they both compatible with the D3200? thanks!

    Hey Theoria, First of all thanks for the time you take to make all these videos. I was wondering what your opinion is on the push-pull version of the 80-200 2.8 . The focus might be a bit slower than the 2-ring version you got there in the video, but I read it had similar IQ and since it's about 50% cheaper wouldn't that make a nice budget option on a "fast" lens? Sure, it wouldn't be great for sport photography, but you already mentioned the Tamron should be a better choice over the Nikon because of its focus speed.

    How do you feel about the Nikkor 70-200mm f4?

  • @daviddevita
    @daviddevita8 жыл бұрын

    Hi, Ken. Good morning. I got the 80 200 2.8 following your advise, but I got 2 big issues (please correct me if I'm wrong). 1. Softness at 2.8. I tested this lens at different light conditions and it's too darn soft. It's almost useless. Why would I buy a huge lens like this without being able to use it at 2.8? I got it for wedding photography and portraits and it's kind of useless for that purpose. I tested it on long distances (about 10 m) at 200 mm in a d7200. 2. Out of focus. The softness might be caused by the focusing system. On the same tests I did at long distance only one out of 30 pictures or more was sharp. Yeah, the glass is almost great but does it matter if the picture is still blurry? On the other side, I tried to do the micro af adjustment but no matter what value I put, it just doesn't affect the pictures. Some people is saying this is because of the way the lens is build. So, back to my doubt: does it really worth to still buy this lens or going for the Tamron 70-200 2.8 (more expensive)? The version I got is older than yours in the video (yours has the AF distance switch, the one I got has a manual ring). I had to pay a lot of money for returning it to Japan.

    Hi again, Ken. I know you've been sick, so don't worry if you don't reply shortly. Thank you for your time. Back to your question, yes, I sent it back to Japan. I tested it at 2.8 in short and long distance, and the back focus issue was every single time. In fact I was only able to get 3 sharp shot (at 30 ft) out of 95 at different focal distances. I've been spending some time reading the pdf manual you provided. It indicates that its minimum focusing distance is 1.8 m (6 ft) and in Macro mode 1.5 m (4.9 ft). I performed different tests (focal distance x 50, use a tripod and do micro AF adjustments), then calculate the sweet spot using the upper and lower values. But none of the micro AF I used was affecting the outcome, reason why (I was explained) this lens is dis-calibrated, there is nothing I can do to make it work. This is not meant to work with micro AF adjustments because it has double ring focusing system, they also say at dpreview.com. I have not had any of these issues with any other lens I have, like the 35 mm. I understand this might be 'solved' using 3.5+ apertures, but that is not the purpose I got if for: I want it for portraits mainly and weddings. If I just cannot use it at 2.8 then I prefer to pay a little more for a Tamron which is sharp at 2.8. On the other hand, I also purchased the 35-70 2.8 D. It is not 'sharp as hell' but it has better results, in fact my 35 mm DX 1.8 G is sharper at 1.8. I found this issue with the 50 mm 1.8 E (manual) which you also recommend in other video. Why you think this is caused? is it because is an older lens? If the reason is just stupidity, please just say it, that will be fine. Sorry for the long writing. Thanks again and hope you feel better.

    Hi there, I'm currently looking to buy a lens primarily for wildlife, but at the same time good for a bit of moon/star gazing, landscape, concerts and.. well a bit multi-purpose I guess. I'm currently leaning towards the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR, but I can't seem to find much people using this for wildlife. Would it do the trick or am I missing something important about wildlife that makes this lens not that good of a choice? What would you recommend? My budget would like me a lot if I paid 700$ max for it. Thanks!

    I've used the 70-300 on my D700 and it works well. Overall I've been quite impressed with the quality of images produced with this relatively inexpensive lens. That said I do miss the extra "reach" of my crop sensor D7100 which is the body I most commonly use this lens on when photographing wildlife. That said another video on the Angry Photographer's channel makes a pretty strong case for using the DX mode on full frame bodies when using this lens. As he points out you are not really gaining "reach" on a crop sensor body you are just projecting the same image circle on a smaller sensor...which in effect can be duplicated by enlarging the D700 image in Lightroom.

    Good points, I don't think I'd need to be in dx mode, simply because most stuff I will shoot will be about 70-150 I'd guess, but for the stuff when I need longer, it's what's making me think about going that route.
